Our Target
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:
1. describe materials according to shape, size, color, hardness, taste, odor and temperature
2. identify the other properties of matter
Let’s
Try
Let’s Explore
Aside from mass, weight and volume matter has other properties. This property is recognized
through the senses.
Pick up the
Concept
SHAPE
It refers to the physical form of an object. An object can be a circle, triangle, rectangle or a square. Some
objects have irregular shapes.
Color Size
Figure 3. A purple
flower absorbs all the
other colors and
reflects only purple.

materials
Temperature
Taste Temperature is the measure of how warm or
cold an object is. Temperature can be determined
by the use of a thermometer.
There are two temperature scales that are
frequently used, these are Celsius scale, water
freezes at zero degree Celsius (0 º C) and boils at
one hundred degrees Celcius(100 º C). In
Fahrenheit scale, water becomes ice at 32 º F and
Taste refers to the sweet, sour, salty, bitter or meaty boils at 212 º F.
flavor of food or drink
Odor
Odor refers to the smell of an object. It may be
pleasant or foul.

Question:
1. Are there objects that have similar properties? Write their names. How are they similar?
Example: The hallow block and sandpaper are similar in texture

OTHER PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Elasticity
Elasticity is the ability of material to return to its original shape after being stretched or deformed.
Malleability
Malleability is the ability of some solids to be hammered into thin sheets and molded into various shapes.
Compressibility
The particles of solids are very near to each other
and are said to be compressed or compact. The
particles of liquids are just close enough to each
other that they can slide past one another. The
particles of gases are very far from each other. But
when placed inside a container, the gas particles
can be compressed and stay close to each other.
Ductility Fluidity
Ductility is the ability of some materials Liquids and gases have the ability to flow.
This property is called fluidity. Liquids and gases
to be drawn into fine wires.
take the shapes of their containers.
Figure 11. Copper and silver are very ductile; they can
be easily turned into fine wires.
Let’s Work Out
A. Underline the word described in each item and write C whether the word refers to its color, S for
size, SH for shape, O for odor, TA for taste, H for hardness, TX for Texture and T for
temperature
__SH__1. Square box _______6. Sour mango
______2. Red t-shirt _______7. Violet flower
______3. Long hair _______8. Fragrant flower
______4. Diamond _______9. Hot coffee
______5. Round table _______10. Rough wall
B. Identify the properties of matter in each item. Choose your answer inside the box.
