Proving Triangle Congruence

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

 Proves two triangles are congruent. M8GE-IIIG-1

Learning Objective:
 Describe two-column table and its related elements
 Presents parts and uses of two-column proof.
 Shows that triangles are congruent using two-column table.
 Verifies statements on congruent triangles.

Time Allotment: 60 minutes for four (4) days

Key Concepts

A Congruent Triangles is two triangles that their vertices can be paired so that
corresponding sides and corresponding angles are congruent.
A Two-Column Proof is one way to organize your thoughts in writing a proof. In the left
column you write statements that lead to what to prove. In the right hand column, you write
reasons for each step you take. Furthermore, most proofs start with the “given” information and
the conclusion is the statement that you are trying to prove.

 Three Steps to Proof

1. Mark the given information to the diagram.
2. Identify the congruence postulate/theorem to be used and the additional
information needed and why.
3. Write down the statements and reasons. Make sure your last statement is what
you are supposed to be proving.

How will you prove if the two triangles are congruent?

We can say that two triangles are congruent if their six corresponding parts are equal.
However, we can also say that two triangles are congruent without showing all corresponding
parts and that is by using some postulates and theorems.

1. SAS (Side-Angle-Side) Congruence Postulate

If the two sides and an included angle of one triangle are congruent to the corresponding
two sides and the included angle of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

Take Note:
Included angle is the angle formed by two given sides. In order to use SAS Postulate, we
must be able to identify appropriate sides and angle.

3. ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ Given
4. SAS Congruence Postulate

2. ASA (Angle-Side-Angle) Congruence Postulate

If the two angles and the included side of one triangle are congruent to the corresponding
two angles and an included side of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

Take Note:
Included side is the side formed by two given angles. In order to use ASA Postulate, we
must be able to identify appropriate angles and side.

2. Given
3. Vertical Angles Theorem
4. ASA Congruence Postulate

3. SSS (Side-Side-Side) Congruence Postulate

If the three sides of one triangle are congruent to the three sides of another triangle, then
the triangles are congruent.

Illustrative Example:
Write a proof.
Given: ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅

4. AAS (Angle-Angle-Side) Congruence Theorem
If two angles and a non-included side of one triangle are congruent to the corresponding
two angles and a non-included side of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

Illustrative Example:
Write a proof:
Given:
RN bisects
Prove:

STATEMENT REASONS
1. Given
2. RN bisects Given
3. Definition of Angle Bisector
4. Reflexive Property
5. AAS Congruence Theorem

5. LL Congruence Theorem
If the legs of one right triangle are congruent to the legs of another right triangle, then the
triangles are congruent.

6. LA (Leg-Acute Angle) Congruence Theorem

If a leg and an acute angle of one right triangle are congruent to a leg and an acute angle
of another right triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

7. HyL (Hypotenuse-Leg) Congruence Theorem

If the hypotenuse and a leg of one right triangle are congruent to the corresponding
hypotenuse and a leg of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

8. HyA (Hypotenuse-Acute Angle) Congruence Theorem

If the hypotenuse and an acute angle of one right triangle are congruent to the
corresponding hypotenuse and an acute angle of another right triangle, then the triangles are
congruent.
