6 : Volatile oils
They are odorous principles found in various plant parts. Because they
evaporate when exposed to the air at room temperatures, they are called
volatile oils; they are also called essential or ethereal oils.

Volatile oils are colorless as a rule, particularly when they are fresh, but
on long standing they may oxidize and resinify, thus darkening in color,
to prevent thisdarkening, they should be stored in a cool, dry place in
tightly stoppard, preferably full, amber glass containers.

As a rule, volatile oils are immiscible with water, but they are
sufficiently soluble to impart their odor to water. They are soluble in
ether, alcohol and most organic solvents. Many volatile oils consist
largely of terpenes (terpenes are natural products whose structures may
be divided into isoprene units).

Generally volatile oils and volatile oil-containing drugs are divided in to
the following classes:
1. Hydrocarbons.
2. Alcohols.

Essential oils are derived from various sections of plants :

• Leaves- Rosemary, Basil, Eucalyptus.
• Flowers- Rose, Lavender, Clove.
• Seeds- Almonds, Anise, cumin.

Pharmacological Used As Volatile Oils :

• Carminative as for Rosemary oil.
• Antitussive as for Eucalyptus.
• Antiseptic as Clove oil.
• Aromatherapy, alternative medicine as Lavender Oil.

Distillation :
Steam distillation method is the most popular method to extract essential
oils. .‫ طريقة التقطير بالبخار هي الطريقة األكثر شيوعًا الستخراج الزيوت العطرية‬:‫التقطير‬
Extraction by solvent :
Some plant materials, like vanilla, which is difficult to extract, or jasmine
flowers or rose petals, which are too delicate to survive the process of
distillation, use another method to extract their aromatic essence, a
process called solvent extraction.

‫ وهي‬، ‫ استخدم طريقة أخرى الستخراج جوهرها العطري‬، ‫الورد التي تكون حساسة للغاية بحيث ال تتحمل عملية التقطير‬

This process utilizes petroleum solvents such as petroleum ether, hexane

or toluene; alcohol solvents such as methanol or ethanol; or carbon
dioxide. As the solvent is added to the botanical it is absorbed and allows
the release of the aromatic compounds.
‫تستخدم هذه العملية املذيبات البترولية مثل البترول األثير أو الهكسان أو التولوين ؛ مذيبات الكحول مثل امليثانول أو‬

These solvent extracted compounds are called "absolutes".

• Can act as an astringent.
• lt protect the uterus.
• Rose oil is good for Digestion and make soft skin.

.‫• يمكن أن تعمل بمثابة قابض‬
.‫• يحمي الرحم‬
.‫• زيت الورد مفيد لعملية الهضم ويجعل البشرة ناعمة‬
.‫• يستخدم أيضا لتنشيط الدورة الدموية‬
Procedure :
1. To make rose absolute the rose petals are placed in beaker.

2. 10 ml of solvent (ethanol) is added to same beaker (The ethanol

helps to extract the aromatic oils from the concrete while leaving

behind the non-polar plant waxes ).

3. Ethanol evaporated and leaving behind the finished absolute we can

add olive oil as carrier.
