ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:
By the end of this lesson, I want students to use
the podcast by listening to figurative language. I
want students to listen and learn about the
difference of metaphors and similes. The ISTE
standard being addressed through audio is
Knowledge Constructor – 1.3.b. Students
evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility
and relevance of information, media, data, or
other sources
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students will listen and learn about the two
figurative languages- metaphor and simile by listening to the examples and definition. The learning
goal is for students to be able to interpret similes and metaphors by using context of the sentence.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I will introduce this tool by talking about the definition of similes and metaphors making it clear for
them to understand while listening. I will make them aware of their learning goals by giving them a
task in the end of the audio to talk with their loved ones about figurative language or teaching
someone about it. I will read a book to them with examples of these and they will listen for one
example of a metaphor and simile. Feedback will be given to students in class after listening to the
podcast and we will discuss the one example they heard and interpret the meaning of the sentence
using context.
Managing student learning:
This tool will cause students to move from passive to active social learner by taking the knowledge they
gained to reflect it in class. Sharing and causing them to be social to interpret a sentence that contains
figurative language to discuss what they learned. Students will share their sentence and their interpretations
of the sentence with their partners.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
The tool I selected helps enhance student learning because it gives the immersive readers a chance to listen
to the lesson. They can rewind and fast forward as many times anywhere and anytime until the information is
retained. The tool reflects on action and expression because they can express their knowledge gained with
the podcast to share with classmates and use that new knowledge to take the action while listening to the
book Firebird and listen for similes and metaphors.
Reflection:
I feel the lesson will impact the students by allowing them to listen repeatedly to the differences of
similes and metaphors because they are the two figurative languages people tend to confuse. I look
forward to reading the book Firebird the next day to continue the lesson and have students listen for
these two figurative languages. The lesson gives students an encouragement to learn the content by
listening and engages them with their families to express their learning.
