What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students should be able to define, identify, and use figurative language (similes and metaphors) in a
text. Students should also be able to use technology and a multimedia tool to create their own audio
recording, podcast, or video showing what they learned.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters, Nearpod audio recording, or Stop
Motion Studio

Description of Software:
Spotify for Podcasters- allows users to record themselves talking, add sound effects, and even add
music to create podcast episode that can be shared with others
Nearpod Audio Recording- allows users to record themselves reading along with their story/text
Stop Motion Studio- allows users to take pictures of their chosen/creative objects, move them
around, and compiles them into a stop motion video that tells a story. Users can also add in voice
overs or music to make their video more engaging for the audience.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I will create a Nearpod lesson about the figures of language that provides them with multiple
opportunities to identify and use figurative language in a text. I will also provide them with
examples of audio recordings, podcasts, and videos. I will include screen casts showing the
students how to use each tool to make their won creation. I will list student goals as “I can”
statements at the beginning of the lesson. The students will be able to navigate through the
Nearpod lesson at their own pace and experiment using a variety of tools to choose what they
want to create to show what they have learned about figurative language. I will create the lesson
using Nearpod, be there to answer any questions, and monitor the students as they progress
through the lesson. I will check students’ work along the way and provide feedback guiding them
in the right direction and making sure they are meeting expectations. I will also watch each
students’ creation and give them feedback on anything that needs to be changed or anything they
did well prior to having them present their creations to the class. I will conclude the lesson by
asking the students about one thing they learned from the lesson, what is one thing they enjoyed
doing while making their creation, and what is something they learned from their classmates’
creation.
Managing student learning: Yes, they will be active learners and critical thinkers by using their own
knowledge and creativity to meet their goals. I will set checkpoints to make sure the students are on
task and moving at a reasonable pace.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
This lesson meets all three UDL principles by getting the students engaged in videos, working on
activities where they can record their responses, and allowing them to be creative and creating their
own presentations and present them.
Reflection:
The differentiated instruction will allow all types of learners to get engaged in the lesson. The usage
of multi-media tools will enhance student comprehension, prompts student choice, pushes students

to think critically, and expressing what they know about the content. I look forward to implementing
a combination of teacher and student led instruction and giving students the chance to creatively
express their knowledge and what they’ve learned.
