7.0 in HSDL, MP HSD and MP HSD PURE systems share common adapters
and transfer hardware for all phasing and shot densities. This standard work
instruction will be divided in two sections. The first and main section will cover
the preparative work associated with gun loading, installation of detonation
transfer components, and preparation/installation of adapters. The second
section will consist in an APPENDIX containing the specifics of jacket and charge
installation for each system.

For details on troubleshooting and repair of damaged equipment, refer to the

related chapter in the maintenance manual. This procedure is a guide for
experienced personnel. The HSD TCP Gun Systems Maintenance Manual
provides much more information. Job Planning and Perforation Job Design
are beyond the scope of this procedure. Follow the references, TCP WebSDP,
and applicable manuals. Consult the local Perforating Domain Champion and
InTouch for any questions.

3.1 List of General Rules

If you fail to properly identify equipment and use the wrong part, assembly or
subassembly, it can cause misfire, gun flooding, low-order detonation, and
off-depth perforation.

Make sure you follow the General Rules listed below to avoid these problems.
1. Each gun/spacer assembly must have a specified identification number that
connects it to its Job, Run, and Position in the gun string as shown in the
gun loading diagram.
2. You must use the newest assembly drawing to make sure the correct part
numbers are used.
3. You must print a gun loading sheet for each gun assembly before you load
each gun.
4. You must record a specified gun identification number (as shown in the gun
diagram) on the gun loading sheet for each gun.
5. One person must make sure all the information on the gun loading sheet is
correct and complete.
6. Another person, who cannot also be the person who performs Step 5 above,
must witness and make sure all the information is complete.
7. You must fill in all of the information during the gun loading.
8. You must verify and sign each gun loading sheet immediately after the gun is
loaded and marked.
9. The carrier has two part numbers. One part number is on the carrier’s end in
a white box (carrier PN and manufacturing information) and the other is large
print on the carrier’s length (carrier/tube assembly PN). The part number in
large print on the carrier’s length must match the part number indicated on
the assembly drawing.

3.3 Inspect and Prepare Carrier and Loading Tube

Cycle Time
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

Cases have been observed where the loading tube was allowed some rotation
prior to perforating (due to gun shock from multiple zones perforating or to rough
handling). This would lead to off scallop perforations.
It is now mandatory to use an extended loading tube alignment key. A new
design (1) has been implemented but some locations might still own the older
format. In this case, a local modification (2) is required using the add on key
plate 101772187.
Consult inTouch for further information (technical alert 6729405).
The alignment key must extend beyond the back of the top plate in order to
engage deeper in the carrier's alignment groove.

PROVISORY RELEASE

Do not reuse guns previously run as spacers.

If you reuse a gun that was used as a safety spacer, it can cause debris to collect
in the booster-to-booster air gap. This practice is not permitted because of
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

service quality failures.

If grease, scale, corrosion, metal filings, mud, laser cutting powder, dust, mill
scale, or any type of foreign bodies are inside the carriers, loading tubes, or
adapters, they can migrate through the system and collect by gravity at the
booster-to-booster transfer gap. This can cause failure of the ETE system
to transfer, resulting in misfire or low-order detonation, which are potentially
catastrophic failures.
All foreign bodies must be removed from the adapters, loading tube, and inside
the carrier. Make sure that the gun system is clean.

Step Work Instruction

1. Examine the outside of the carrier and loading tube assembly to make certain there is no
heavy corrosion, scratches, damage, deformed scallops, or bulging.
2. Locate the carrier part number on the carrier body and record this on gun loading sheet.
3. Open the thread protectors.

Step Work Instruction

Seal surface integrity is very important. Any damage to the seal surface can lead
to gun flooding and result in catastrophic incidents, such as low-order detonation,
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

gun split, gun burst, and misfire.

Make sure that you do not damage the carrier’s seal surfaces when pulling the
loading tube out of or pushing the loading tube into the carrier.
If centering tabs are present on the loading tube, they may create an axial
scratch on the seal surface.
Use extreme caution when pulling or pushing a loading tube that has centering
tabs. Use an insertion guide as much as it is practical and safe to do so.

1663173835

4. Remove the loading tube from the top of the gun and carefully position it on supports.
5. Locate the loading tube part number on the loading tube body and record it on the gun
loading sheet.
6. Make sure that the carrier and loading tube assembly part number, the carrier part number,
and the loading tube part number all agree.
7. Count the number of scallops per foot to make sure the carrier shot density is correct and
make sure the phasing is correct.
8. Use the alignment key to make sure that the position of the first charge cutout on the
loading tube is correct.
9. Use the carrier thread key path to verify the position of the first scallop on carrier is correct.
10. For perforating guns (with scallops) make sure the first scallop on the carrier is aligned with
the first charge cutout on the loading tube.
11. Carefully inspect all scallops in order to detect any abnormal machining.

The upper alignment plate and lower alignment plate should be welded
perpendicular to the long axis of the loading tube. The alignment of the ETE
transfers is very important. Any large deviation can cause detonation transfer
failure.

Step Work Instruction

12. Make sure the loading tube upper alignment plate and lower alignment plate are aligned
correctly.
13. Make sure the loading tube does not have debris inside, distorted charge cutouts, or
sharp edges along the detonating cord path.
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

Always wear a face shield if you use a workshop air nozzle. If directed into the
face, flying particles can cause severe eye injuries.
14. Use a shop air nozzle and light brush to remove debris from inside and outside the
loading tube.

A damaged seal bore can cause gun flooding. A flooded gun may cause a
low-order detonation or gun split when fired. These can be catastrophic failure
and, possibly cause the loss of the well.
If you find corrosion or damage, perform the Repair Seal Bore SWI (InTouch
6488823) before you continue.
15. Examine the carrier's ends, seal bores, and threads for corrosion, burrs, scratches, and
debris.

All debris of any kind must be removed from the carrier. Never push debris inside
the carrier if they cannot be pushed all the way through.

It is important to locate the position of every component going into the loading
tube before you start installation. Incorrectly positioned charges and detonating
cord retainers can interrupt the explosive train and cause a low-order detonation
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

or off-the-target perforation. The blank and loaded sections of loading tubes

must be marked.
Loading tubes must be marked with detonating cord support locations.
Step Work Instruction
1. Mark the loading tube with the intervals to be loaded. Measure intervals as shown in
the gun loading sheet and gun diagram. Make sure that the number of charge cutouts
matches the calculated value.

It is important to support the detonating cord properly. Failure to support it

can lead to detonation transfer failure, detonating cord damage, and low-order
detonation, which are potentially catastrophic events. Form a support point
with three detonating cord retainers installed next to each other or in one plane
(based on phasing configuration). Support points must be repeated every two
feet on the length of the loading tube.
When a blank section starts at the top of the loading tube, the first detonating
cord support point must be started at the uppermost charge position.
At the bottom of the loading tube, the last detonating cord support points must be
completed at the lowermost allowed charge position.
Within a partially loaded gun, the lowermost shaped charge of a perforating
interval can be treated as the first cord support point for the blank section below it.
Within partially loaded gun, the uppermost shaped charges of a perforating
interval can be treated as the last cord support point for the blank section above it.
2. Mark the loading tube with the required position for the detonating cord support points.
Identify the charge cutouts that will receive a detonating cord retainer.

The photographs and process presented below show 12 SPF MP system,

which is the system/charge combination known to require the most care in
terms of detonating cord installation. Other systems will require similar or
more simple processes like:

- using a wooden or brass dowel to guide the detonating cord directly

through the jackets (e.g. case of spiral cord path configurations with large
openings on the side of the jackets)

- not using any specific piece of equipment (e.g. case of "jacket-less"

configurations or support ring and metal clips configurations).

Cycle Time
10 minutes per 20 feet

To complete the task you will need a fish tape in a plastic housing, a minimum of
20 ft long, and a spool holder. It is advised to do this operation with a helper.

Damage to the detonating cord can cause low-order detonation, stop fire, or
failure inside a gun system. This can cause a Major or Catastrophic Service
Quality incident.
Visually and physically examine the detonating cord during installation.
Carefully pull the detonating cord through the gun to prevent damage from
sharp edges or burrs.
Do not pull strongly on the cord. If tension is noticed, follow the cord and find
where it is caught or dragging.

jacket. A stuck tape is an indication of the wrong path of the tip. When the tape is stuck,
check the condition visually, pull the tape back a little and properly lay the tip with the help
of your fingers. Usually the tip gets stuck on the edge of the jacket side opening, or on the
cord retention horns. Ask your helper to guide the tip of the tape with their fingers while
you are feeding the tape slowly from the lower end of the loading tube.

9. Cut the detonating cord from the spool using DETONATING CORD CUTTER (SLICING)
(100272458).

Quality Note
In the case of straight line detonating cord, total length of the detonating cord after cutting
will be equal to 23 ft. For some systems, the cord follows a spiral path. This fact must be
taken in account to cut the right length of detonating cord. Experience can be acquired:
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

Most detonating cords are marked with length references. Once the cord is run in straight
line through the loading tube (and jackets), record the closest number to the top alignment
plate. Cut the cord leaving plenty (excessive) amount of detonating cord. Load the charges
(fully loaded gun). Once all charges are inserted, observed the new mark located in the
same area as previously. The difference between the two records will be the quantity
of cord used for the spiral path. For the next gun, in order to avoid wasting too much
detonating cord, take this number into account and adjust the cord length to be cut.

10. Record the length of the detonating cord in the explosives log depending on local
requirements for explosives.

If you do not cut the detonating cord correctly, it can cause a misfire. Always

Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

area so the explosive powder does not from fall out of the detonating cord.

Any moisture on the detonating cord’s explosive powder can cause a misfire.
Always trim one to two feet off the detonating cord when it is removed from
storage. This removes the explosive powder that may have been affected by
humidity in the air. More may need to be cut depending on environmental
conditions and how long the detonating cord has been in storage. Always trim 1
to 2 inches from the detonating cord immediately before installing each booster.

Detonating cord can shrink at high temperatures. Without proper retention (crimp
shell) and adequate slack, the booster can back out, which prevents effective
ballistic transfer and will cause a failure. Always make sure that the crimp shell is
stopped against the C-Lock retainer or collet fingers. The crimp shell must not
be underneath the C-Lock retainer or collet fingers.

Excessive, loose, or missing explosive powder may cause a misfire. Always

inspect boosters. Make sure that the cardboard retainer is in place and that no
loose powder is falling out. Do not add additional explosive powder inside booster

If you fail to crimp a booster correctly, it will cause the ballistic transfer to fail.
Always use detonator crimp pliers (H432091, without cutting edge) that have
been checked with 0.188 inch GO and 0.192 NO GO pins.

Use the first opening from the end of the crimper. Make only one crimp at each
crimping location. Multiple crimps at one location can cause shell failure, and
this will happen when you use an aluminum booster or detonator crimp shells.
Apply slight pressure to the tip of the booster with the tip of your finger to make
sure there is internal contact with detonating cord.
Make the first crimp 4 mm from the mouth of the booster, and make the next
crimp 3 mm from the first crimp and at a 90-degrees offset from where the first
crimp was made. Squeeze the pliers tight enough to make sure it is a good crimp.
Always examine the crimp to make sure the aluminum was not cracked or
damaged during crimping. For additional information, see Practical Crimping
Procedure (InTouch 5439006). Make sure the booster is not blocked by plastic,
grease, or any other debris.

Transfer Configurations

Note
ETE system transfers (all guns sizes, phasings and shot densities) are based on
a limited series of similar components. Only the transfer extenders (if present)
vary in length and are specific to each gun size. The system drawing defines
which component (part number) to use. Components are made of two different
materials: standard temperature material and high-temperature material (with
different part numbers). The system drawing defines which component (part
number) to use based on job design.

Refer to APPENDIX for specific instructions on the system specific
Charges/Jacket/Loading Tube combination you are planning to load. Some
systems (with bending tabs) do not require any jackets to secure the charges.

Refer to the systems Vs Charges compatibility table in section A of APPENDIX.

A dropped charge can detonate upon impact on the floor resulting in catastrophic
injury or death. Always use rubber, plastic or wooden flooring in the area where
perforating charges are handled.

Be extremely careful when unloading a charge (if unloading is required)!

There are specific instructions on the equipment to use and the right practices to
follow inside the SWI - Gun Unloading (InTouch 654845).
Failure to follow these instructions can lead to catastrophic injuries or death.

Always load guns in good lighting condition. Proper fit of components (especially

fit of the detonating cord inside the recesses of the jacket or retainer clips) is
critical and has to be constantly monitored during loading.

Quality Note
Do not proceed to the next jacket until the charge is fully installed and the
detonating cord confirmed to be properly located at the primer area of the charge.

Tip
Loading from the lower end allows the gun loader to insert shaped charges or
detonating cord retainers and to push the loaded section into the carrier, as
loading occurs.

This allows protection of already loaded sections and makes loading larger
intervals more manageable.

This method is also useful when work space is limited and specific equipment
not available (adjustable height translating loading benches for guided insertion
or rolling trolleys for charges).

The pattern is:

1. Once lower transfer is ready, load the bottom section of the loading tube (2
ft min).
2. Carefully align loading tube with top of carrier (vertically and horizontally) -
refer to loading tube insertion section for notes and steps.
3. Carefully insert bottom transfer and loading tube bottom end inside top
of carrier.
4. Load another 1 to 2 ft section of loading tube.
5. Push/slide the 1 to 2 ft loaded section of loading tube into the carrier.
6. Repeat pattern 4 and 5 until only 1 ft. of loading tube remains sticking out
of the carrier.
7. Prepare upper ETE transfer (see next section).

Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

Use the first opening from the end of the crimper. Make only one crimp at each
crimping location. Multiple crimps at one location can cause shell failure, and
this will happen when you use an aluminum booster or detonator crimp shells.
Apply only slight pressure to the booster to make sure there is internal contact
with detonating cord.

Step Work Instruction

1. Identify all the parts and make sure they are in good condition (see information above).

If you fail to support the detonating cord at the top of loading tube, it can cause
the upper transfer plate to loosen and cause a misfire. When the top of the gun
is a blank section, use detonating cord retainers to support the detonating cord at
the first charge cutout that faces up.
2. Make sure that the detonating cord is
supported at the top of the loading tube
by either a detonating cord retainer or an
actual charge (if the interval is loaded with
charges).

Failure to support and align the carrier properly can lead to:
• Excessive bending of the loading tube resulting in damage to loading tube.
• Excessive stress on already inserted loading tube and
jacket/charges/retainers resulting in damage or dislocation of
components.
• Excessive friction against the carrier when pushing the loading tube resulting
in accidental drop of carrier and loading tube resulting in damage to
equipment.

Damaged or dislocated jacket/charges/retainers or transfer components can

result in interruption of the explosive train.
Always make sure that the loading tube is properly supported and aligned.
While inserting and pushing the loading tube, always be careful that
no component (lower transfer components or jacket/charge/retainer) is
hanging/catching on any angle of the carrier. If any abnormal noise is heard or
any abnormal hold up is felt, stop and investigate.

Tip
It is recommended to use specific alignment and guided insertion equipment
whenever possible.

This is especially important when "all at once" loading tube insertion is planned
on larger size guns.
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

Schlumberger does not provide a specific type of equipment to perform this

operation. However, some locations - most of the time with the support of a third
party mechanical construction company - have developed custom gun loading
racks and benches. Contact inTouch and product center for further information
on this type of structures. Some useful features of guided insertion installations
include:
• a gun rack (load rated) with built in locking device (usually a chain vice) which
allows carrier to be arrested in rotation and translation.
• a loading tube rack (load rated)
– mounted on wheels that can be locked.
– height adjustable (in order to adjust to the axis of multiple size guns).
– with roller heads/trolleys which allow smooth rotation of the loading tube
and axial translation along the loading rack.

Step Work Instruction

1. Confirm that interval loaded within the loading tube corresponds to the carrier marking and
unique ID per gun loading sheet and diagram.
2. Install loading tube guide on seal surface and threads at top of the carrier.
3. Carefully align the loading tube with the top side of the carrier (vertically and horizontally).
Use adjustable stands for correct alignment.
4. Gently guide the lower transfer into the carrier. Be careful not to catch the transfer
components on the side or internal upsets of the carrier. Use rolling/roller stands/bench for
smooth translation.

The loading tube guide does not allow complete insertion of the loading tube. It
must be removed before the loading tube alignment plate passes through the
carrier seal surface. Failure to maintain proper guidance of the alignment plate
can lead to damage to the seal surface (by sharp angles/edge of the loading tube
top alignment plate key or any other sharp angle/edge).
Damage to the seal surface can lead to gun flooding, low order detonation, gun
split, gun parting, or interruption of the explosive train.
Always position the gun carrier so that the keyway is at the top side of the carrier.

1663173837

6. Remove the loading tube guide.

7. Re-position the carrier (if needed) so the keyway is facing upright. Re-secure the carrier
once rotated.
8. Check the alignment of the loading tube key with the carrier keyway. Rotate loading tube
if needed.

Note
Adapters life cycle management-

It is extremely important manage the fleet of adapters.

A tracking system should be put in place locally in order to monitor the individual
life of each adapter.

A robust process should guide the allocation of each adapter in order to achieve
optimal turnover and control the ageing of the fleet.

Some details are provided in InTouch Solution: TCP Gun Adapters Tracking
Procedure (InTouch 6750815).

1663165070 1663165068 1663165069

Seal surfaces that are out of tolerance or corroded and pitted can cause failure. If
you install an incorrectly maintained adapter on a gun, it can cause gun flooding.
Always do complete maintenance on the adapter as specified in the Adapter
Maintenance SWI (InTouch 6508982).

If you install an incorrectly maintained adapter on a gun, it can cause a misfire.

If there are foreign bodies, they can cause failure. Handling caps, plugs, and
lifting subs can be a source of debris and cause a misfire if they are not correctly
Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

maintained. Always do complete maintenance on the adapter, handling cap, and

handling plug as specified in the Adapter Maintenance SWI (InTouch 6508982).

If you install an incorrect or damaged O-ring, it can cause gun flooding. Gun
flooding can lead to low-order detonation, gun split, gun parted, or misfire.
Examples of inadequate O-rings include:
• O-rings with the incorrect material for the operating environment
(temperature, time of exposure and fluid chemistry).
• O-rings with damage.
• O-rings with an expired shelf life.
• any unidentified O-ring, such as one that is loose, removed from an unlabeled
bag, worn out, or has faded identification.

For more information, check with InTouch for elastomers selection guidelines.
Select the correct O-ring for the operating environment. Refer to system
specifications and drawing to make sure you use the correct part number.
Carefully inspect O-rings before installation. Make sure that the O-ring’s
expiration date has not passed. If you cannot identify the O-ring, do not use it.

If you use a brush to apply grease to O-rings and seal surfaces, the brush hairs
and other contaminants may remain on the O-ring or seal components. These

Testing Services\Julien Janicot, Alexey Barykin\InTouch 6772379\0.3\Release Date:Provisory\EDMS UID: 1663084080\Produced: 30-Nov-2016 21:29:24

extreme care when you apply grease to O-rings and seal surfaces. Do not use a
brush of any kind. Wear nitrile gloves to apply grease. Always make sure that
the grease in the container is clean.

1663173839

Grease on the O-rings will increase the risk of contamination because any debris
that comes in contact with the grease will stick to the O-ring. This can cause
high-pressure seal failures that cause gun flooding. To avoid failure, lubricate
O-rings immediately before installation of the adapter onto the carrier. Do not
store an adapter with greased and fitted O-rings if you plan to install it later.
