1 Health, Safety and Environment

1.1 Personnel
The WPSA (Wireline Perforating Shock Absorber) is a perforating accessory
device. It can be deployed with an assortment of perforating guns. The crew
supervisor must be familiar with all safe operating and arming procedures for
these explosive gun systems. The reference for these gun systems is the
Wireline Perforating FOM (InTouch ID: 3013565), found at InTouchSupport.com.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

1.2 Equipment
Along with the hazards associated with explosive operations, the weight of
perforating gun assemblies can create additional hazards during rig up and rig
down. The tensile forces exerted on the cable head weak point and bending
forces on the WPSA tool requires thorough pre-job planning to match the
perforating accessory equipment (including the cable, head, and weak point) and
the perforating gun system (gun size, weight, and length).

It is strongly recommended to use vertical make-up procedures for the perforating

gun system to safely accommodate the longer and heavier gun systems during
the rig up. The WPSA is not designed to pick up excessively long and heavy gun
systems from a horizontal position on the catwalk. Refer to the vertical rig up and
rig down procedures in this manual.

2 General Description and

Specifications

2.1 Overview and Applications

The Wireline Perforating Shock Absorber (WPSA) is designed to protect
downhole equipment (PGGT*, UPCT, etc.) while perforating wells with wireline
conveyance. The shock associated with the detonation of large perforating
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

guns can damage sensitive instruments run with the string and can lead to a
premature parting of the wireline weakpoint. It is availible in two sizes:

• 3.38-in WPSA-A for gun systems 3.12-in daimeter and larger

• 1.69-in WPSA-B for gun systems 2.88-in daimeter and smaller

The WPSA enables wireline crews to successfully convey large gun strings;
which in the past were considered beyond their limits (due to perforating shock).
It is placed in the string directly above the top perforating gun. Perforating
shock energy generated from the explosive detonation or subsequent transient
pressure imbalances are absorbed by the WPSA. The tool absorbs bi-directional
energy, which can occur from either tensile or compressive forces acting on
the gun system.

Features and benefits

1. Protects the electronic instrumentation associated with downhole equipment.

2. The shock absorber reduces the weak point failures attributable to perforating
gun shock.
3. When used in conjunction with other best practices for perforating, it
enableds wireline crews to successfully convey large gun strings; which in
the past were considered beyond their limits (due to perforating shock).
4. Multiple descent operation can be accomplished in significantly less rig time
than other means of conveyance, without damaging downhole equipment.

3 Theory of Operation

3.1 Basic physics of service

The WPSA is placed directly above the top perforating gun. The WPSA-A is
compatible with all wireline gun heads 3-3/8 in. and larger. The WPSA-B is
compatible with all wireline gun heads 2-7/8 in. and smaller.

The tool design incorporates an upper mandrel assembly and a lower assembly,
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

which move independently of each other. A crushable element placed between

these assemblies permanently deforms when subjected to any load. The
standard crushable element's material composition and length enables it to
deform uniformly within safe limits of the cable-head weak point.

The crushable element is actively deformed during both compressive and

tensile loading of the gun string. The crushable element, deforms to absorb
and dissipate the transient forces generated during perforating. The WPSA
can be easily disassembled in the field when the disposable element needs
replacement. Typical element replacement frequency is one to four descents
depending on well conditions.

Experience from the pilot series tool has shown that the crushable element
has ample energy absorbing capacity to be used on one to five large gun
descents before element replacement is required. The crushable element acts
as a sacrificial “energy absorbing” component. Damage to delicate electronic
downhole tool components and the cable-head weak point, which is a common
occurrence from perforating shock, will be seriously reduced or eliminated when
the WPSA is included in the perforating string.

The external housing of the tool has scribed marks for quick visual measurement
of the element's remaining usable length. The WPSA design allows for simple
and efficient disassembly of the tool; which enables the crew to replace the
crushable element in a few minutes. They require a minimum amount of common
supplies and hand tools for disassembly. The element replacement procedure
can be performed at the wellsite.

In the event the gun string needs to be fished with pipe, drill-string weight 3-1
on the fish can be used to completely deform the shock absorber's crushable
element. When the element is crushed, the upper and lower sections of

the WPSA can interlock by engaging a locking key assembly. The locking
mechanism enables right-hand torque to be transmitted below the tool. This
method of grapple engagement during fishing may be required to properly latch
the fishing head.

6 Maintenance
Term Definition
FIT (Fast Inspection of FIT checks are to be performed after every job. Pre-job FIT checks
Tools) are recommended.
Crushable Element Dependent on the perforating shock experienced on gun descents.
Replacement Procedure The crew should measure the existing element compression and
replace the element as necessary. The replacement procedure
requires partial disassembly of the WPSA-AA and also includes
FIT checks.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

TRIM (Tool Repair and TRIM checks are to be performed on a monthly basis or after
Inspection Monthly) a prescribed (5) number of jobs. It is a maintenance procedure
designed to inspect and replace WPSA components before failure.
Q-Check The Q-check procedure is a complete inspection and rebuild of the
WPSA tool and requires scheduled replacement of expendable
parts. This should be performed every 6 months or after a
prescribed (20) number of jobs.

6.1 FIT Procedure

6.1.1 FIT-1 Checks

Prior to the FIT check, the WPSA should be thoroughly rinsed with water
to remove corrosive fluids, well debris and gun debris from the exposed
components and internal cavity. The spanner wrench drill holes allow access to
the internal cavity of the tool during the rinse.

Prior to the FIT check, the WPSA Crushable Element deformation can be
externally measured to determine if replacement is warranted. Refer to the
Crushable Element Replacement Guidelines section. If the Crushable Element
does not warrant replacement, a FIT check is the recommended maintenance
procedure.

1. Remove and inspect both upper and lower Thread Protectors. Inspect welds
on protectors for cracks and corrosion. Verify that the O-rings are in place
and are in good condition. Also, make sure there is no moisture inside the
protectors.

6-2 WPSA-A and WPSA-B / Maintenance 6-2

2. Inspect the Upper Head body for visual cracks, bent contact spring assembly
and excess moisture. Clean the internal seal bore and inspect the surface
finish. Clean and inspect the external threads, remove debris and burrs.
Lightly lubricate the threads of the Upper Head with Rutherford Slick Stuff #4
(B022197).
3. Inspect the make-up-plate groove on the Upper Head for visual cracks.
4. Inspect the Outer Sleeve for wear and then remove the four 1/4-20 socket
head cap screws. Slide the Outer Sleeve down the tool to expose the Element
Housing shaft. Clean, inspect and lubricate the Housing shaft. Remove any
loose debris located in the cavity. Verify that the two locking keys are in place
and tightly secured with screws. Reposition the Outer Sleeve to the top,
install and tighten the four socket head cap screws to the Upper Head.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

5. Clean and inspect the exterior surface of the Element Housing for visible
cracks. Verify that the upper Locking Key is in place in the alignment slot
and the 1/4-20 socket head cap screw is tightened. The Locking Key must
engage the Element Housing and prevent rotation. The beveled edge of
the Locking Key must face upward.
6. Inspect the Element Housing cavity and Crushable Element through the four
(4) spanner wrench holes. There should be some movement of the element
whenever the tool is stroked. Also inspect for debris in the cavity.
7. Inspect through the four (4) spanner wrench holes in the Lower Housing
Cavity for visible cracks, sand or debris.
8. Make sure the lower Locking Key is in place in the alignment slot and the
1/4-20 socket head cap screw is tightened. The Locking Key must engage
the Lower Housing and prevent rotation. The beveled edge of the Locking
Key must face upward.
9. Remove the Threaded Ring and the two O-rings. Clean and inspect
the O-ring grooves and external seal bore and replace with two O-rings
(B011285). Inspect the Lower Head body for visual cracks and excess
moisture. Clean the external seal bore and inspect the surface finish. Inspect
the lower end of head for deformation from gun hammer effect. Clean and
inspect the external threads, remove debris and burrs. Lightly lubricate the
threads of the Lower Head with Rutherford Slick Stuff #4 (B022197).
10. Install Threaded Ring on Lower Head.

6.1.2 FIT-2 Checks

FIT-2 checks may not be enough to identify cuts and kinks in the wires that
could have happened during the (technique sensitive) assembling of the tool.
A field location has developed a WPSA-AA water flood check procedure,
InTouch content ID 4971248, to identify damage to the WPSA-AA internal wiring.

Private

6-3 WPSA-A and WPSA-B / Maintenance 6-3

Damage may pass unnoticed when insulation is checked at surface with a

megohmmeter, but cause a short once the wires are exposed to a conductive
borehole fluid. In order to prevent this type of failure, it is recommended that the
referenced InTouch best practice be followed.

Note
Spraying the tool with water and then megging it will not suffice because the
downhole wire may not short out until it is completely submerged

1. Using a multimeter check the through-wire conductor for electrical continuity.

At 78°F, resistance from UH to LH should be equal to or less than 0.5 ohm
on the Rx1 scale.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

2. Using a megohmmeter, check the thru-wire insulation resistance. At 78°F,

with 500 VDC, electrical resistance should be equal to or greater than 100
megohms.
3. Five degrees of angular rotation between the lower section of the tool and
the upper section of the tool is normal. However, if rotation is greater than 5°
degrees, check spirol pin and locking keys for proper installation.
4. There should be at least a minimum amount of “free-travel” when pushing
and pulling on the assembled tool (with a new element). If the tool does not
stroke, it could signify a problem such as metal interference or debris inside
the tool. Investigate any abnormality.
5. Prior to the job the amount of “free travel” in the tool denotes some partial
compression of the Crushable Element. Using the lower edge of the Outer
Housing as a reference, record the distance from the large groove of the
Element Housing to the maximum travel in both the up and down direction.

Note
The span between adjacent grooves is 1 in. After the job again record the
“free-travel” distances to determine the remaining element capability.

6.1.3 FIT-3 Checks

Send results of the Crushable Element deformation to the SRC Perforating
HSD Gun Shock Database. The comparison of a) well parameters, b) gun and
perforating charge systems and c) Crushable Element compression distance are
the reliable method to analyze the effects of shock on different gun systems.

6.2 Crushable Element Replacement Guidelines

WPSA-A

The WPSA-A Crushable Element (T6015684) is preloaded with 800 lbf to 6.50
in. finished length. The Crushable Element is compressed in both the upward
and downward direction. When crushed to 2.5 in., the Element will have been
compressed 4.0 in. and will have absorbed approximately 10,000 in.-lb of energy.

WPSA-B

The WPSA-B Crushable Element (T6040961) is preloaded with XXX lbf to X.XX
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

in. finished length. The Crushable Element is compressed in both the upward
and downward direction. When crushed to X.X in., the Element will have been
compressed X.X in. and will have absorbed approximately XX,XXX in.-lb of
energy.

6.2.1 Checking the Length of a New Crushable Element

WPSA-A

It is easy to check the length of a new Crushable Element installed in the

WPSA-A. Simply read the V-groove scale on the Element Housing (T6015696).
When a new Crushable Element is installed, the Outer Sleeve (T6015688)
should center over the 0.090 in. wide groove on the OD of the Element Housing
(T6015696).

WPSA-B

It is easy to check the length of a new Crushable Element installed in the

WPSA-B. Simply read the V-groove scale on the Element Housing (T6040971).
When a new Crushable Element is installed, the Outer Sleeve (T6040959)
should center over the X.XXX in. wide groove on the OD of the Element Housing

6.2.2 Check the Length of a Used Crushable Element

Note
It is important to learn how much energy is used per gun run. As a rule of
thumb, a Crushable Element should be sufficient for two to three gun runs.
However, it depends on the gun size, how many guns, shot density, well
conditions, and what type charges you are shooting. So, recording data and
learning how well this tool performs is very important. Therefore, please
record your data and report your findings to the Wireline Perforating InTouch
Help Desk or input the data directly into the SRC HSD Wireline Database
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

WPSA-A

It is easy to check the length of a used Crushable Element installed in the

WPSA-A. With the Outer Housing as a reference, note the distance from the
0.090 in. wide groove to the maximum distance in either the upward or downward
directions. Since each V-groove is 1.0 in. apart, the maximum travel is reached
at the fourth mark in either direction from the 0.090 in. wide groove.

Check the downhole wire visually and with fingertips for defects in the
insulation in a similar manner as described in Technical Alert InTouch
5496901. Insulated wire is a very basic component but this type of defect
can cause considerable wellsite difficulties and lost-time.
The optional Downhole Hookup Wire (H142548) with an insulation OD of
0.068-in is not compatible with the BCC boot or liner called out for use with
the Downhole Hookup Wire (H122757) with insulation OD of 0.093-in. Pay
strict attention to the optional equipment combination table, left-hand bottom
corner of drawing,T6015697 WPSA-AA, ASSEMBLY 3-3/8 (WIRELINE
PERFORATING SHOCK ABSORBER), and Detail B on the right-hand
bottom corner of the drawing.
The use of the wires interchangeably with an incorrect boot/liner combination
will result in a burned/shorted boot and wire and a misrun.

5. Clean and inspect remaining tool components, replace as necessary during

reassembly.
6. Reassemble the WPSA.

• WPSA-A: Refer to 4.1.2: Assembly

• WPSA-B: Refer to 4.2.2: Assembly

7.1 Rig-Up and Rig-Down Procedure

The rig-up and rig-down operation of long perforating gun systems requires
special precautions. Typical perforating rig-up procedure requires the use of full
coverage WHE riser flanged to the annular BOP stack. Wireline deployment of
long gun sections armed on the catwalk and picked up the V-door is discouraged
for the following reasons:
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

1. Riser hung in the derrick will interfere with the cable head and gun string
as it is raised up the V-door.
2. A heavy gun string will pendulum swing across the rig floor after it clears the
V-door, creating a serious hazard to personnel and equipment.
3. The WPSA-AA mandrel can be subjected to high bending forces when guns
of excessive length are lifted from the catwalk. The maximum recommended
gun length attached below the WPSA during horizontal pick up is:

• WPSA-A: 20 ft
• WPSA-A: XX ft

Vertical rig up and rig down performed in the rig floor mouse-hole is recommended
when connecting multiple guns to the perforating equipment. Drill collar safety
clamps (standard equipment on drilling rigs) of the proper size should be clamped
around the gun to support it in the mouse-hole. Most perforating gun heads and
adapters do not have make-up plate grooves, so the safety clamp is required.
If the make-up plate is required, use the Heavy Duty Type SFT-159 (H427316)
with a safe work load rating of 3500 lbf when supporting heavy gun strings.

Note
For additional instruction for bridle cable connections, see chapter 7 in the Heads
Maintenance Manual InTouch ID 3012542.

8 Troubleshooting

8.1 Wellsite Monitoring and Troubleshooting

The WPSA-AA is very susceptible to improper assembly, often times leading to
knicks or kinks of the downhole wire inside the tool. Problems like these are
difficult catch at surface with a simple 500 volt meg. Often the tool checks good
at surface and shorts out downhole in wellbore fluids.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44

FIT-2 checks may not be enough to identify cuts and kinks in the wires that could
have happened during the (technique sensitive) assembling of the tool. Damage
may pass unnoticed when insulation is checked at surface with a megohmmeter,
but cause a short once the wires are exposed to a conductive borehole fluid.

It is recommended that the water flood check procedure (InTouch ID 4971248

best practice be followed to identify damage to the WPSA-AA internal wiring.
Refer to the FIT-2 Check in section 6.1.2, the WPSA-A Assembly Procedure in
section 4.1.2, and rig-up and rig down procedure in section 7.1.

Note
Spraying the tool with water and then megging it will not suffice because the
downhole wire may not short out until it is completely submerged

Potential Severity: Serious

Potential Loss: Assets
Hazard Category: Machinery equipment hand tools

The optional wire (H142548) and liner (H245765) are not interchangeable with
the standard wire (H122757). The standard wire (H122757) has insulation OD
of 0.093-in and the optional wire (H142548) has a 0.068-in insulation OD. The
optional components are not interchangeable with standard components and the
use of mixed components will result in a burned/shorted conductor and a misrun.
