1.1 Personnel
The WPSA (Wireline Perforating Shock Absorber) is a perforating accessory
device. It can be deployed with an assortment of perforating guns. The crew
supervisor must be familiar with all safe operating and arming procedures for
these explosive gun systems. The reference for these gun systems is the
Wireline Perforating FOM (InTouch ID: 3013565), found at InTouchSupport.com.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44
1.2 Equipment
Along with the hazards associated with explosive operations, the weight of
perforating gun assemblies can create additional hazards during rig up and rig
down. The tensile forces exerted on the cable head weak point and bending
forces on the WPSA tool requires thorough pre-job planning to match the
perforating accessory equipment (including the cable, head, and weak point) and
the perforating gun system (gun size, weight, and length).

guns can damage sensitive instruments run with the string and can lead to a
premature parting of the wireline weakpoint. It is availible in two sizes:
The WPSA enables wireline crews to successfully convey large gun strings;
which in the past were considered beyond their limits (due to perforating shock).
It is placed in the string directly above the top perforating gun. Perforating
shock energy generated from the explosive detonation or subsequent transient
pressure imbalances are absorbed by the WPSA. The tool absorbs bi-directional
energy, which can occur from either tensile or compressive forces acting on
the gun system.

3 Theory of Operation
The tool design incorporates an upper mandrel assembly and a lower assembly,
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44
Experience from the pilot series tool has shown that the crushable element
has ample energy absorbing capacity to be used on one to five large gun
descents before element replacement is required. The crushable element acts
as a sacrificial “energy absorbing” component. Damage to delicate electronic
downhole tool components and the cable-head weak point, which is a common
occurrence from perforating shock, will be seriously reduced or eliminated when
the WPSA is included in the perforating string.
The external housing of the tool has scribed marks for quick visual measurement
of the element's remaining usable length. The WPSA design allows for simple
and efficient disassembly of the tool; which enables the crew to replace the
crushable element in a few minutes. They require a minimum amount of common
supplies and hand tools for disassembly. The element replacement procedure
can be performed at the wellsite.
In the event the gun string needs to be fished with pipe, drill-string weight 3-1
on the fish can be used to completely deform the shock absorber's crushable
element. When the element is crushed, the upper and lower sections of

the WPSA can interlock by engaging a locking key assembly. The locking
mechanism enables right-hand torque to be transmitted below the tool. This
method of grapple engagement during fishing may be required to properly latch
the fishing head.

6 Maintenance
Term Definition
FIT (Fast Inspection of FIT checks are to be performed after every job. Pre-job FIT checks
Tools) are recommended.
Crushable Element Dependent on the perforating shock experienced on gun descents.
Replacement Procedure The crew should measure the existing element compression and
replace the element as necessary. The replacement procedure
requires partial disassembly of the WPSA-AA and also includes
FIT checks.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44
TRIM (Tool Repair and TRIM checks are to be performed on a monthly basis or after
Inspection Monthly) a prescribed (5) number of jobs. It is a maintenance procedure
designed to inspect and replace WPSA components before failure.
Q-Check The Q-check procedure is a complete inspection and rebuild of the
WPSA tool and requires scheduled replacement of expendable
parts. This should be performed every 6 months or after a
prescribed (20) number of jobs.
Prior to the FIT check, the WPSA Crushable Element deformation can be
externally measured to determine if replacement is warranted. Refer to the
Crushable Element Replacement Guidelines section. If the Crushable Element
does not warrant replacement, a FIT check is the recommended maintenance
procedure.
1. Remove and inspect both upper and lower Thread Protectors. Inspect welds

2. Inspect the Upper Head body for visual cracks, bent contact spring assembly
and excess moisture. Clean the internal seal bore and inspect the surface
finish. Clean and inspect the external threads, remove debris and burrs.
Lightly lubricate the threads of the Upper Head with Rutherford Slick Stuff #4
(B022197).
3. Inspect the make-up-plate groove on the Upper Head for visual cracks.
4. Inspect the Outer Sleeve for wear and then remove the four 1/4-20 socket
head cap screws. Slide the Outer Sleeve down the tool to expose the Element
Housing shaft. Clean, inspect and lubricate the Housing shaft. Remove any
loose debris located in the cavity. Verify that the two locking keys are in place
and tightly secured with screws. Reposition the Outer Sleeve to the top,
install and tighten the four socket head cap screws to the Upper Head.
SRC-WIRLINE\Cheho Pak\InTouch ID 3016410\2.2\Release Date:27-Jul-2012\EDMS UID: 27897946\Produced: 30-Jul-2012 13:20:44
5. Clean and inspect the exterior surface of the Element Housing for visible
cracks. Verify that the upper Locking Key is in place in the alignment slot
and the 1/4-20 socket head cap screw is tightened. The Locking Key must
engage the Element Housing and prevent rotation. The beveled edge of
the Locking Key must face upward.
6. Inspect the Element Housing cavity and Crushable Element through the four
(4) spanner wrench holes. There should be some movement of the element
whenever the tool is stroked. Also inspect for debris in the cavity.
7. Inspect through the four (4) spanner wrench holes in the Lower Housing
Cavity for visible cracks, sand or debris.
8. Make sure the lower Locking Key is in place in the alignment slot and the
1/4-20 socket head cap screw is tightened. The Locking Key must engage
the Lower Housing and prevent rotation. The beveled edge of the Locking
Key must face upward.
9. Remove the Threaded Ring and the two O-rings. Clean and inspect
the O-ring grooves and external seal bore and replace with two O-rings
(B011285). Inspect the Lower Head body for visual cracks and excess
moisture. Clean the external seal bore and inspect the surface finish. Inspect
the lower end of head for deformation from gun hammer effect. Clean and
inspect the external threads, remove debris and burrs. Lightly lubricate the
threads of the Lower Head with Rutherford Slick Stuff #4 (B022197).
10. Install Threaded Ring on Lower Head.

Note
It is important to learn how much energy is used per gun run. As a rule of
thumb, a Crushable Element should be sufficient for two to three gun runs.
However, it depends on the gun size, how many guns, shot density, well
conditions, and what type charges you are shooting. So, recording data and
learning how well this tool performs is very important. Therefore, please
record your data and report your findings to the Wireline Perforating InTouch
Help Desk or input the data directly into the SRC HSD Wireline Database

1. Riser hung in the derrick will interfere with the cable head and gun string
as it is raised up the V-door.
2. A heavy gun string will pendulum swing across the rig floor after it clears the
V-door, creating a serious hazard to personnel and equipment.
3. The WPSA-AA mandrel can be subjected to high bending forces when guns
of excessive length are lifted from the catwalk. The maximum recommended
gun length attached below the WPSA during horizontal pick up is:
• WPSA-A: 20 ft
• WPSA-A: XX ft
Vertical rig up and rig down performed in the rig floor mouse-hole is recommended
when connecting multiple guns to the perforating equipment. Drill collar safety
clamps (standard equipment on drilling rigs) of the proper size should be clamped
around the gun to support it in the mouse-hole. Most perforating gun heads and
adapters do not have make-up plate grooves, so the safety clamp is required.
If the make-up plate is required, use the Heavy Duty Type SFT-159 (H427316)
with a safe work load rating of 3500 lbf when supporting heavy gun strings.
Note
For additional instruction for bridle cable connections, see chapter 7 in the Heads

FIT-2 checks may not be enough to identify cuts and kinks in the wires that could
have happened during the (technique sensitive) assembling of the tool. Damage
may pass unnoticed when insulation is checked at surface with a megohmmeter,
but cause a short once the wires are exposed to a conductive borehole fluid.
Note
Spraying the tool with water and then megging it will not suffice because the
downhole wire may not short out until it is completely submerged
The optional wire (H142548) and liner (H245765) are not interchangeable with
the standard wire (H122757). The standard wire (H122757) has insulation OD
of 0.093-in and the optional wire (H142548) has a 0.068-in insulation OD. The
optional components are not interchangeable with standard components and the
use of mixed components will result in a burned/shorted conductor and a misrun.
