Note
The OD of all tools and accessories must be measured with a caliper.
2. Confirm the drillstring parameters from customer engagement data sheet, or directly from
client:
• top and bottom connections
• inner diameter
• crossover
• minimum restrictions
• expected conditions.
3. Do a review of the agreed fishing technique, and make a rig-specific fishing plan (with a
rig visit if necessary). The list that follows is the minimum that you must check during
the rig visit:
a. Sheave position in the crown.
b. Cable routing through the top drive to pipe.
c. Cable routing from the unit to the well head.
d. Visibility of cable routing or sheaves by sight, or by camera from the unit.

4. CHECKLIST ITEM;
Select the necessary Fishing kit and make sure that you have the necessary parts, full
functionality, load-tests, certifications and documentation.
Note
See Appendix B (p. 41) for the different fishing kits and part numbers, and H2S rated
fishing downhole overshot for SFT-644 and SFT-709 (available on special order).
When using the 1-11/16-in O.D. rope socket kit equipment, the hex adapter should be
utilized on every descent. However, there are occasions when the drill pipe I.D. will not
allow the adapter to pass through. These include: tapered string and/or heavy weight drill
pipe. In this case the plain adapter will be required. It must later be swapped for the hex
adapter at the first opportunity. This usually occurs when standard drill pipe is added to the
string. A “no-go” is not available for the 3-3/8-in O.D. top sub since this is the slim hole
version of the SFT-644.
5. Prepare the Reverse Cut and Thread stripping kit assembly (100974733).
6. CHECKLIST ITEM;
Read the following document before you fish for tools with radioactive sources:
• Fishing for Radioactive Sources – US Briefing Document - InTouch 4315136.
• Fishing For Radiactive Sources – International Briefing Document - InTouch 4310065.

4 Execute
DO NOT USE MORE THAN THE SAFE WORKING LOAD OF THE WIRELINE
CABLE, OR 75% OF THE LOWER WEAKPOINT RATING AT THE HEAD. THE
CABLE/WEAKPOINT CAN BREAK AND CAUSE INJURY.
Step Action
1. At the first sign of sticking, close all the calipers, pull to the Maximum Safe Pull (MSP),
and apply the break.
If tension drops, re-apply MSP and set brakes again. Monitor the tension closely.
Note
Cable cycling (or ‘yo-yo’-ing) is tough on cables and can result in a bird cage, or worse, a
disaster.
Cable Cycling
In case of a toolstring or cable stuck situation:
• The first pull-up must be to the maximum safe pull limit (MSP).
• Temporary stop just below the jar activation point is allowed to determine if the tool
will come free without jarring.
• Winch speed is limited to 2000 f/hr until the tool is free.
• Do not cycle the cable.

HCS Wireline InTouch\Uchenna Eke, Barry Albert Lumankun\InTouch Content ID 6184644\4.4\Release Date:12-Jul-2016\EDMS UID: 1657883568\Produced: 12-Jul-2016 12:50:58
In case of a toolstring getting held-up while running in the hole (RIH), a cycle is triggered
when tension is reduced to:
• Less than 60% of the normal up-tension in wells with less than 10 degrees of deviation.
• Less than 50% of the normal up tension for wells with more than 10 degrees of
deviation.
And then returned to, at least, normal up tension for the well. Attempts to pass an
obstruction is limited to three cycles at one depth.
When moving down from a stationary point, slack the cable off in 500 lbs increments
of surface tension while waiting for the tension release to be transmitted to the logging
tool. Surface tension should not drop below:
• 60% of the normal up-tension in wells with less than 10 degrees of deviation.
• 50% of the normal up tension for wells with more than 10 degrees of deviation.
Note
• Normal up tension is the surface tension recognized by the CMTD/TDL while moving
out of the hole at logging speed and under normal logging conditions (no sticking).
• The above cycle definition is quantified only by the magnitude of the drop in tension
from the normal up logging tension. However, the larger the variation between the
highest tension and lowest tension the cable is exposed to (tension differentials), the
larger the impact on the load sharing mechanism between the armor packages and
torque induced. As long as the cable is under significant tension, these factors will not
have the opportunity to progress causing any cable anomaly (birdcage, high-armors,
loose armors, stranded armors, and etc.).
• More the cycles performed, more are the resulting torque imbalances and hence
more is the chance of cable damage. This is particularly important since the cycles
performed in previous jobs might affect the cables in subsequent jobs, if the cable
was not returned for service and twisting afterwards. Having said that, the total
number of cycles should be always tracked between cable services and recorded in
RITE (as remarks).
• Regardless of the tension/speed values, below four factors must always be considered
– The tension must NEVER be dropped below the cable weight in mud.
– The concept of cycling (as defined above) should be clear to the FE/FS or winch
operator, so that they understand the damage mechanism and consequence
on the cable.
– Cycling is NOT permitted upon sticking.

MAKE SURE THAT THE WEAR PAD TOUCHES THE BEAM IN STEP 6. SHARP
EDGES CAN CUT THE SLING AND CAUSE THE EQUIPMENT TO FALL.
2. Lower the elevator and remove the sheave wheel.
3. CHECKLIST ITEM;
Cut the cable 12 ft above the rotary table, plus 1 ft for every 1,000 ft more than 10,000
ft for deviated holes (more than a 30 deg deviation), and 12 ft above the rotary table for
vertical holes.
Remember to take “Heave” and "Tide" level into account.
4. Tie off the upper end of the cable to the rig to prevent it from being pulled over the sheave
wheel.
5. Look at the slings fiber optic cable for light.
Light shows that there is no damage to the internal core or sling.
6. Hang the sheave on the derrick.
Make sure that you hang the sheave as high as possible, to allow sufficient space
between the sheave and the top of the drill pipe in a location with no interference of pipe
handling, and on a major structural beam of the derrick that can hold twice the cable
breaking strength.
Note
The position of the upper sheave should be changed if the cable starts interfering with
drillpipe operations.
MAKE SURE THAT THE WEAR PAD TOUCHES THE BEAM. SHARP EDGES CAN CUT
THE SLING AND CAUSE THE EQUIPMENT TO FALL.

The links must have a length of 140-in or more to increase the distance between the
drillpipe and top drive.
A roller assembly which has a minimum diameter of 5-in can be used on the top drive
to prevent cable rubbing.
DO NOT USE BICYCLE WHEELS BECAUSE THEY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CABLE.
Do not allow the use of bicycle wheels. They are commonly only rated to 6000 lbs (the
standard Varco and Aker ones) and they will add an acute angle in the cable path that will
cause the cable to break.

Do not allow the use of S-shaped pipe. Although it appears to be a very good idea to
route the cable away from the top drive unit, it is NOT. The constant uphole and downhole
movement of the wireline logging cable under tension will either cut slots in the pipe or
damage the cable.

2. Connect a circulation sub one or two stand
above the casing shoe to clean out the
grapple.
Note
The fishing kit has a 3-1/2-in and 4-1/2-in
circulating sub and insert. If the rig has
different size drill pipes, they will have to
provide the proper crossovers.
Note
If you have a long open hole, you can circulate every 20-25 stands in open hole.
Prolonged circulation above the fish may cause a wash-out that will make it more difficult
to find the fish.

11. Make sure the pump is “OFF” before attempting to engage the fish.
Do not attempt the fish with the pump on, since there is a chance of pushing the fish down.
DO NOT USE MORE THAN THE SAFE WORKING LOAD OF THE CABLE.
HIGHER LOADS WILL BREAK THE CABLE.
2. Maintain tension 1000 lbs over the cable weight in mud and approach the fish slowly
without circulation.

3.
Do not rotate and jerk the drill pipe during engagement process. There is a risk of breaking
the grapple due rotating the drill pipe while engaged with the fish. This risk must be
communicated to the client as Schlumberger cannot guarantee the condition of the grapple
downhole during engagement process with rotation.
Monitor the tension and set 2000 lbf more on the fish and do not exceed the maximum
safe pull of the cable and weakpoint breakage ratings.
Note
There will be no increase in surface tension until the tool is freed up and moved downhole.
The driller may notice a loss in hook load; this is an indication that the tool has been
engaged.
4. Pull two joints of drillpipe (60 ft), if applicable, and monitor the tension loss of at least
2,000 lbf (minimum) to confirm engagement.
Check with Drillers weight indicator and Mud logger weight indicator and record the value.
DO NOT TURN THE PIPE AFTER YOU ENGAGE THE FISH. THIS WILL PREVENT
DAMAGE TO THE CABLE, AND PREVENT ACCIDENTAL DISCONNECTION OF THE
FISH.
5. Pick up the cable to 1000 lbs over the cable weight and ask the driller to go down again,
until the tension increases 2000 lbf.
6. Do the process a minimum of two times to make sure that the fish is in the downhole
overshot.
7. If “dry pull out of hole” is decided, increase Drain sub
the mud pump pressure to blow the disk
in the sub.
The pressure necessary to blow the disk is
approximately 1,600 psi.
Blown disk
8. If “dry pull out of hole” is decided, Use the lowest possible flow rate of the rig and increase
gradually.
Try 40 galUS/min (9.085 m3/hr) flow rate.
9. If “dry pull out of hole” is decided AND the pressure reduces suddenly (meaning the disk
has blown), STOP the pumps immediately to prevent cable washout.

4.8.1 ECRD
Note
For cable connection, refer to Appendix L, LWF Uphole and Downhole Assembly,
of the LWF SWI (InTouch content ID 6431876). Ignore steps 8 and 9 that give
instruction to connect the CCTS to the CSES, the uphole conductors to the
downhole conductors, and the uphole ground to the downhole ground.
Step Action
1. Send a current to release the ECRD.
Refer to the ECRD Weak Point Release Procedure SWI.
2. Make sure that the tool power is “off” and acquisition is “off” after getting a good indication
that the ECRD has successfully released.

Note
Delta Tension = Tension difference between tension required to break the weak point (WP)
and maximum safe pull (MSP). The C-plate rating needs to be taken into consideration
when defining Delta Tension, otherwise the C-plate may be damaged. Obtain the Stretch
Coefficient from the ALC Manual ( Intouch Content ID: 3614996) or ToolPlanner ( Intouch
Content ID: 3272999).
5. Make sure that the rig has sufficient height above the drill floor to accommodate the stretch
of the cable when attempting to break the weak point.
6. Slack the cable.
7. Clear the rig floor and make sure that no one is near the cable.
8. Put the “Top drive” down.
9. Make sure the cable will not rub the top drive.
10. Put the cable tension to MSP and be aware of T-bar spinning.
11. Check the T-bar cable clamp for slippage for five (5) minutes.
12. Connect the elevator to the T-bar cable clamp.
13. Move the top drive up.
The CMTD tension will drop when the top drive is moving upwards, since the tension is
taken by top drive.

14. Pull the top drive slowly up to the tension required to break the weak point and hold until
the weak point breaks.
Monitor the weight indicator from the driller’s console closely.
Note
Before starting to pull the top drive up, it is a good practice to zero the weigh indicator on
the driller’s console. Note when the T-bar cable clamp is picked up just above the C-plate;
the tension should be close to the MSP. Make sure that the weight indicator on driller’s

Wet Pull Out is a good indication that the fish is still engaged to the grapple. It is also a
good indication that the driller is not rotating and jerking the drill string. If the client agrees
to do a wet pull out proceed with section 4.9.1; otherwise, proceed with section 4.9.2.

Do not rotate and jerk the drill pipe. There is a risk of breaking the grapple due to activities
such as jarring, excessive tension/compression cycles, and rotating the drill pipe with the
fish engaged. This risk must be communicated to the client as Schlumberger cannot
guarantee the condition of the grapple downhole after the above activity.
Pull the drill pipe, with the fish, out of the hole at slow speed and ask the driller to monitor
the weight of the drill pipe to make sure the fish is still engaged.
3. Once the tool is at the surface, install the
C-plate immediately to prevent the fish
from falling down into the well.
4. Break the toolstring apart and remove the downhole overshot with the grappled tool inside.
5. Remove the tool from the downhole

Value is the maximum measurement range. The measurement data is invalid above this tension.
2
These figures are under investigation.
3
No safety factor applied.
4
Note that the SSIJ will bottom out at 900 lbf tension. The limit for compression is defined by the SMDR and is
dependant on the type of sonde used.
5
The EMM should be eccentralized with TLC stand-offs at 1 in less than bit size to obtain full compressional
resistance.
6
The HIT-A will be more prone to bending in large holes due to the small sonde cross section. In small holes
(<6 in) the compression rating can be increased up to 5000 lbs.
7
HRLT-B without centralizers = 1,800, with fin centralizers=3,600, with rigid centralizers=7,800 lb.
8
The compressional behavior of the MDT is very temperature and pressure dependent. Above 3,000 psi
confining (hydrostatic) pressure, the weakest points of the MDT are the hydraulic compensator housings as
found on the MRHY and MRPO. The RPQS is rated to 50,000 lbf in tension and 22,000 lbf in compression,
and the crystal pressure sensor is not affected by compression or tension acting on the housing. See the
“Environmental Effects on MDT Strength” table below.
9
These figures are calculated at 15,000 psi and 300 degF and assuming an 8-in hole. Note that this means
that the estimated tensile strength of the tool is reduced at lower confining (well) pressure.
10
Determined with a 1.5 safety factor.
11
These kits are only suitable for use with the USRS-A or B, to a maximum hole size of 9-5/8 in.

Note
There is a risk of breaking the grapple due to activities such as jarring, excessive
tension/compression cycles, and rotating the drill pipe while engaged with the
fish. If this happens the grapple will not be able to release from the fish. This
risk must be communicated to the client as Schlumberger cannot guarantee the
grapple will release downhole. Never rotate the pipe to the left, as you will break
the grapple control and will not be able to disengage from the fish. If you rotate
with a left-hand torque you may also unintentionally back off the pipe.
Step Action
1. Bump down on the tool string to take tension off the grapple.
2. Turn the pipe clockwise, and start pulling up slowly. Do not pull up more than 1-in for each
turn, because the grapple will close again and hold the tool.
3. If it is likely that the grapple continues to be engaged on the fish and the pipe is not
coming free, do the previous two steps and increase the number of turns for each inch of
pipe pulled up.
