PROGRAM BASA BAYA LAHAT READING CAMP (BRIGADA PABASA)

NARRATIVE REPORT
July 26- August 13, 2021

I. Introduction

A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the
breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be
a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. Reading is
the mother of all study skills. It is one of the most complex and valuable skills a person can acquire. It is not
merely the ability to recognize written or printed words, but it also refers to putting meaning to what a person
reads and drawing a unified thought from what they have read.

II. Content

In support of the Division’s Basa Baya Lahat Program Reading Camp (Brigada Pabasa),
Masaguisi Elementary School conducted a 15-day Brigada Pabasa in support of the Division's Basa
Baya Lahat Program Reading Camp (Brigada Pabasa) for the school's identified struggling readers
in Kindergarten through Grade VI. There are five struggling readers in Kindergarten, five in Grade
I, five in Grade II, three in Grade III, three in Grade IV, three in Grade V, and one in Grade VI, as
reported earlier by the grade level advisers.
The learners were divided into three groups depending on their reading capability. Mrs. Genelyn J.
Regio handled Group I (Kinder-Grade 1 learners), Mrs. Wilibeth M. Rogelio for Group II (Grade II-Grade
III learners), and Mrs. Florenda P. Romasanta for Group III (Grade IV-Grade VI learners).
The reading session started on July 26, 2021. As agreed upon by the Reading Camp teachers and
parents, and with the approval of the school principal, Sir Gerry P. Rivamonte, the morning session was
conducted at Sitio Riverside, and the afternoon session was scheduled at Sitio Pag-asa. To ensure the safety
of the learners and the reading camp teachers, they strictly followed the health protocols. A health check was
done before conducting the daily activities.
From time to time, the school principal patiently monitored the reading session. He finalized the
daily schedule of the program. He also assigned the reading camp teachers to alternately submit a narrative
report of the daily activities.
The first two weeks (July 26 to August 6, 2021) of the program ran smoothly and successfully. The
teachers were able to meet the daily objectives, although there were times when some learners were not able
to attend due to fever.

The third week of the program (August 9-13) was done through an online platform because
of the pandemic and the town of Santa Cruz was under ECQ. The face-to-face reading session was
cancelled. Unfortunately, only a few learners were able to attend due to a lack of gadgets, and
others had very poor internet connectivity. However, printed reading materials were given to the
pupils, and the teachers continuously monitored them through text or call.

On August 13, 2021, the 15-day Brigada pabasa came to an end.

III. Conclusion

Reading is one of the tools in education that needs everybody’s support for a child to successfully
acquire. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps them develop
their literacy skills and learn to listen. As teachers, it is our responsibility to motivate, inspire, and encourage
our learners to pursue and instill in their minds that reading is a sword that they can use in every battle of
life. We should be patient enough to help them develop their reading ability and to mold them into better, if
not the best, readers. Our main purpose here is to ensure that no learner will be left behind. Just think
positively and have trust in ourselves and our learners as well. Through the collaborative efforts of the
learners, the parents, and the teachers, let’s believe that we can all make it.
