IV. Rationale
Obesity is a major public health problem and becomes an important
epidemic in both developed and developing countries since an increase in the risky
lifestyle. Obesity is a global problem, affecting an estimated 300 million people
worldwide and its prevalence in the recent decade had a rapid increase (178%).
Obesity is a chronic condition defined by an excessive amount of body fat. It
indicates a weight greater than what is considered healthy. Body weight alone is
not a very sensitive indicator for defining obesity (Atkinson, 1993). Factors such as
age, sex, height, lean muscle mass and body fat percentage are all unaccounted for
when using weight alone to measure healthy body weight on an individual level. It
has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a
BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 and above.
Obesity is generally caused by eating too much and moving too little. Obesity
does not happen overnight. It develops gradually over time, as a result of poor diet
and lifestyle choices, such as: eating large amounts of processed or fast food –
that’s high in fat and sugar, drinking too much alcohol – it contains a lot of
calories, and people who drink heavily are often obese, eating out a lot, drinking
too many sugary drinks, and lack of physical activity.
VI. Methodology
This Balik Alindog Operation: Keeping the obese fit and healthy will cover 28
days, excluding Sundays, starting from May 23, 2022-June 23, 2022. Who will be
involved are the persons from Banga, South Cotabato who are willing to join the
project with a Body Mass Index of 30 and above. The mentee will have to pay
entrance fee of 100 pesos. In order for the mentors to know their real BMI, they will
undergo a “body size” procedure through weighing and seeking their heights (way
to solve their BMI). Their BMI will be recorded before and after the physical
activities to compare if there is progress in their body.
The activities to be done are seminars, physical activities (moderate-
intensive) and awarding at the end.
