I. LEARNING COMPETENCY
M10SP-IIIa-1: Illustrates the permutation of objects.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. illustrate the permutation of objects ;
2. list the possible ways a certain activity can be done;
3. participate actively on virtual discussion;
Lesson: Permutations
Materials:

b. Motivation/Review
Using the concept of “WORD PUZZLE,” the student will guess what
words will be formed, they will write it on the illustration board and raise
their answer immediately. First student raise the correct answer will be
given a points. Different words that will reveal the topic of the day.

c. Activity
(The students will just answer the problem according to what they
understand. The teacher will ask individually)
A. Suppose you secured your bike using a combination lock. Later you
realized that you forgot the 4-digit code. You only remembered that
the code contains the digits 2, 3, 4, and 7.
B. A close friend invited Anna to her birthday party. Anna has 4 new
blouses (stripes, with ruffles, long-sleeved, and sleeveless) and 3
skirts (red, pink, and black) in her closet reserved for such
occasions.
1. Assuming that any skirt can be paired with any blouse, in how many
ways can Anna select her outfit? List the possibilities.
2. How many blouse-and-skirt pairs are possible?
3. Show another way of finding the answer in item 1.
d. Analysis
2. What method(s) did you use in order to give the accurate count?
e. Abstraction
Example 1. Suppose you secured your bike using a combination lock. Later
you realized that you forgot the 4-digit code. You only remembered that the
code contains the digits 2, 3, 4, and 7. List all the possible codes out of the
given digits. Determine the number of permutations made.

2, 4, 3, 7 3, 4, 2, 7 4, 2, 3, 7 7, 2, 3, 4
Example 2. A close friend invited Anna to her birthday party. Anna has 4 new
blouses (stripes, with ruffles, long-sleeved, and sleeveless) and 3 skirts (red,
pink, and black) in her closet reserved for such occasions.
1. Assuming that any skirt can be paired with any blouse, in how many ways
can Anna select her outfit? List the possibilities.
2. How many blouse-and-skirt pairs are possible?
3. Show another way of finding the answer in item 1.
Answer:
1. blouses – stripes, with ruffles, long-sleeved, sleeveless
skirt –red, pink, black
Possible outfits:
blouse-skirt blouse-skirt
stripes - red long-sleeved - red
stripes - pink long-sleeved - pink
stripes - black long-sleeved - black
ruffles – red sleeveless - red
ruffles – pink sleeveless - pink
ruffles – black sleeveless - black
2. 12 blouse-and-skirt pairs are possible
3. Another way of answering is through a tree Diagram

Example 3. In how many ways can Aling Rosa arrange 6 potted plants in a
row?
answer:
Using Fundamental Counting Principle
6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720 possible arrangements of the plant
Example 4. Given the 4-letter word READ. In how many ways can we
arrange its letters, 3 at a time? And list all three letter possible arrangement.
Given the 4-letter be filled _ _ _
4 choices for the first position 4 3 2
3 choices left for the second position
2 choices left for the third position
We apply the Fundamental Counting Principle (FCP) and multiply: 4. 3. 2 = 24
The arrangements are:
REA RAE RED RDE RAD RDA ERA EAR ERD EDR EAD EDA
ARE AER ARD ADR AED ADE DEA DAE DAR DRA DAE DEA
f. Application
1. In how many ways can 5 people arrange themselves in a row for picture
taking?
2. List all possible arrangements of the letters RED.
3. Given the 3-letter word PEN. In how many ways can we arrange its
letters,2 at a time? And list all two letter possible arrangement.
g. Assignment
In your activity notebook, try to answer the activity A and B.
