IV. Procedure Review:
What is permutation?
If there are n objects taken r at a time, how do you denote it?

Motivation:
Math game.
Presentation and Discussion:
If there are n objects which will be arranged r at a time, it will be denoted by P(n,r), P
n,r , nPr or Pnr
How do we find the numbers of permutations of n objects taken r at a time?
Illustrative Example 1.
Problem: Given four letter word R-E-A-D. In how many ways can we arrange its letters, 3
at a time?
Solutions: there are three positions to be filled. We write horizontal marks __ __ __. On
each horizontal marks we write the numbers of choices we have in filling up the said
position. There are 4 choices for the first position. After the first position is filled, there
are 3 choices left for the second position. After the first and second positions are filled,
there are 2 choices left for the third position. So the three positions on the horizontal
marks would be,
4 3 2
we apply the Fundamental Counting Principle and multiply:
4 . 3 . 2 = 24 , thus, there are 24 ways of arranging four letters of READ taking three of
them at a time. Have you seen any pattern?
Let us take a second look at the example above.
Remember n=4, r=3
4.3.2=n(n-1)(n-2)
Notice the first factor is n, and the succeeding factors decrease by 1 each time
Take note that there are r factors in all, starting with n.
If we are going to express it in an equation, our equation will be:
P(n,r)= n(n-1)n(n-2) if n=4, r=3 then,
P(4,3)=4(4-1)(4-2)
P(4,3)=4(3)(2), or 4.3.2
Application:
Determine the equation of the following:
1. In how many ways can 6 persons arrange themselves in a picture taking,
only 4 of them are taken at a time?
2. A dress-shop owner has 8 new dresses that she wants to display in a
window. If the window display has 5 mannequins, in how many ways can
she dress them up?
Activity:
Work in pair: Determine the equation of the following problem.
1. In a how many ways can 5 bicycles be parked if there are 7 available
parking lots?
2. In how many ways can 5 shoes be paired with 3 pants?

Generalization:
Given an example above, what concept should you remember in answering this
type of problem?
Evaluation:
Write mathematical expression or the equation of this problem:
Daisy, rose, dahlia and ladies breath are the only available flowers to be place on
the flower vase. In how many ways can you arrange them if only 3 flowers are
enough in the vase?
