I. TOPIC/S: Respiratory System

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Let us begin our discovery with today’s targets; In the activity, you will be able to:

 Identify the different structures of circulatory and respiratory systems that work together
to transport oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the different parts of the body.
 Explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to transport
nutrients, gases, and other molecules to and from the different parts of the body.
 Identify measures that lead to prevention, detection, and treatment of diseases affecting
the circulatory and respiratory systems.
 Infer how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of respiratory and circulatory systems.
III. PRELIMINARIES:

Engagement activity
Before we begin exploring the anatomy of our lungs and other body parts concerning our
respiratory system, I want you my dear students to perform this beathing exercise I discovered
from the book I read during the break. This breathing exercise is called – Hatha Yoga or the Sun
Salutation!

You can do this in your room with a yoga pad or any cloth will do.

How are you feeling after performing the sun salutation?

What do you think are the benefits of doing yoga?
And what are the benefits of breathing exercises?

IV. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

You can live without water for more than a week, but you will die immediately if you stop
breathing for more than few minutes. Humans like all animals need air to stay alive. Air is found
in the earth’s atmosphere and is compose of mixture of gases. The main gases that make up the
air are nitrogen and oxygen. Our body cells need continuous supply of oxygen to support its
energy producing processes. As a result of this process, your cells can perform all the vital tasks
that keeps you alive. The body system that gets oxygen into the body and removes carbon
dioxide from the body is the respiratory system.

Activity 2: SUMMARIZE IT!!

Refer to the video recommended for you to watch. Summarize the process of respiration.
Narrate how oxygen and carbon dioxide is inspired and expired in our body.

Topic 2 GAS EXCHANGE IN PLANTS

Plants do require oxygen for respiration which in return give out carbon dioxide. Unlike animals
and humans, plants do not have any specialized structures for gaseous exchange, but they have
stomata (present in leaves) and lenticels (present in stems) which are involved in the exchange of
gases. Compared to animals and humans, plant roots, stems, and leaves respire at a very low rate.

PREVENTION, DETECTION, AND TREATMENT OF

Topic 3 DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

The respiratory system is vital to the whole functioning of the body. This system is essential in
bringing in the oxygen required by every aspect of the body, from oxygen the cells need to
function and replace cells that have died to the oxygen the muscles need. It also removes
harmful gases such as carbon dioxide from the body.

The respiratory system disorders or respiratory diseases are the medical terms used to study
about the various types of infections, allergies and other diseases related to the different organs,
tissues and specialized cells of the human respiratory system. The respiratory system mainly
consists of the upper respiratory tract, alveoli, bronchi, bronchioles, trachea, pleura, and pleural
cavity.

INTEGRATION:
1. A man named Levi consumes a half pack of cigarettes every day since his early adult age. Now
at the age of 26 he is suffering from stage two lung cancer. And he doesn’t seem bothered about
his condition and is still consuming the very same number of cigarettes after the diagnosis of his
doctor. How are you going to explain to Levi the possible effect of his negligence?

V. SELF-ASSESSMENT

Self-care is an essential care. Like any other parts of our body our respiratory system is our
concern too. Now, in a scale of 1-3, how confident are you in doing a good job of taking care of
your respiratory system? Justify your answer. And list things of how one should take care of their
respiratory system.

1- Not confident 2- Somewhat confident 3- Extremely confident

VI. SUMMARY

How does respiratory system function to sustain human life?

VII. ACTION

A. Create a schematic diagram tracing the flow of oxygen once it enters the body. Identify the
organs. Use an arrow indicating the flow of oxygen and draw small boxes.
