All glands secrete substances, such as hormones,
that affect other parts of the body. Hormones are
chemical messengers. Even tiny amounts can cause
a big reaction. Hormones help the endocrine system
keep the body’s
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM temperature, fluid
WOMAN levels, and other
conditions nearly
constant. This is
called homeostasis.
Constant conditions
allow your body to
do the work it needs
to do.

The endocrine system works closely with other
systems. A part of the brain called the hypothalamus
is especially important. It directs the endocrine
system and the hormones it releases. Hormones
travel through the circulatory system. Hormones
are important for digestion, too.

Go!
Fight or flight? When you’re startled or in
danger, your brain sends out distress signals.
The hypothalamus causes the adrenal
gland to release the hormone adrenaline. It
circulates quickly through the blood. Heart
and breathing rates increase. Senses
sharpen. It happens fast! You react
before you have time to think.
