Bean plants and most fruit-bearing plants reproduce from seeds. What are the parts of a seed?
Parts of a Seed
The seed is the developed female reproductive organ of the plant. It has an embryo, a food
store, and a seed coat.
Embryo – Inside every bean seed is a dominant plant embryo, which consists of young root and
shoot that will eventually become the young plant.
Food store – The seed also contains all the stored energy that is needed when the embryo starts
to grow.
Seed coat – The seed coat is the protecting cover of the seed. It protects the seed from being
crushed into very small pieces.
GERMINATION – is the start of growth in the seed.
Three factors are required for successful germination, namely: water, oxygen and heat. Water
allows the seed to swell up, burst and initiate the growth of embryo. Oxygen and heat are
needed to release the energy for germination.
REPRODUCTION
Male and female reproductive cells fuse together through a process called fertilization. After
fertilization, an embryo forms inside a seed.
The parent plant disperses the seed. Wind, water, and animals help in the seed dispersal. If the
seed lands on a place where the conditions are right, germination happens and the seed grows
into a new plant.
