Explain the menstrual cycle
(Taken from the Curriculum Guide) S5LT-IIc-3(Day 5 of 5)
Fertilization is the union of sperm cell and egg cell in the fallopian tube.
Sperms are microscopic cells from the male’s reproductive system. It has a head and a
tail and looks like a tadpole.
While inside the uterus ,the embryo will continue to develop until it become a fetus. The
fetus grows and develops in about nine months. When a mature
egg cell leaves the ovary it is swept to the fallopian tube. Million of sperm cells will swim
towards the egg but only the first one to reach it will fertilize it. The moment a sperm cell
touches the egg, fertilization takes place. The fertilized egg is now a zygote. The zygote
travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus. It keeps on dividing to form many different
kinds of cells and become an embryo. The embryo is protected by a sac of fluid that
surounds it.It gets its food and oxygen from the mother’s blood through the placenta. The

are also working. At 16 weeks ,its fingers and toes are well-developed. By the 32nd week
of pregnancy the fetus is positioned with its head downwards. It is usually born around
the 38th- 40th week of pregnancy.
