Describe the different modes of reproduction in animals such as
(Taken from the Curriculum Guide) butterflies, mosquitoes, frogs, cats and dogs. S5LT-IIe-5(Day 2 of 5)

Key Concepts / Understandings to be Reproduction is the ability of an organism to make new individuals. Most animals can only create a new
Developed individual when two parents are present. This is called Sexual Reproduction. Fertilization happens when a
sperm cell unites with the egg cell. It may be external or internal.

4.1 Introductory Activity Preparatory Activity
A. Review:
What is reproduction?
What is asexual reproduction?

What do you think will happen if animals will no longer reproduce?

B. Motivation: Show the pictures below and ask pupils to name each.

4.2 Activity Group the class. Ask them to differentiate frogs and fish from cows and pigs. Have a reporter in each
group.

concept.
1 Pupils have a complete lack of understanding of
concept.

4.3 Analysis Ask the following: 1.

What is sexual reproduction? Sexual Reproduction takes place when sex cells of two parent animals (one
male and one female) unite to form a new organism. 2. What are
the two types of gametes? ( female organ- ovary, male organ-testis) 3. What produces
the egg cell? (ovary) 4. What produces the
sperm cell? (testis) 5. Name the 2
10 minutes methods of sexual reproduction in animals. (Internal Fertilization & External Fertilization)

4.4 Abstraction To generalize, throw the following questions to pupils.

1. Explain what is reproduction. (Reproduction is the ability of an organism to make new individuals.) 2.
What are the difference between the 2 methods of sexual reproduction? (Internal Fertilization happens
when the male animal releases sperm cells into the body of the female animal to fertilize the egg cell while
external fertilization happens when a female animal releases eggs into the environment to be fertilized by
sperm cells also released by a male animal.
