“Dream big, stay positive, work hard, and enjoy the journey.

Good morning to each and every one present out here. This is Daksh Malhotra standing in front of
you to give a seminar on the science of success in JEE.

Slide 1: Before getting into What JEE is? How should we prepare for it?, Should you really go for JEE?
I would like to tell you about

Is it worth preparing for JEE? Is it worth preparing for an IIT? In simple words what is so good that I
should join an IIT.

I know most of you would be thinking about the reasons you should prepare to get into an IIT. Many
of you might also be confused about this decision and the only reasons you have in your mind would
be:

 My entire family would think I am a genius

 I would get a good salaried job
 IIT is a brand that would get my life on track

These were the reasons which were in my mind with confusion like not everyone with a good
package is from IIT and this is true almost 9 lakhs students prepare for IIT and only 10-12000 out
of them get a chance to get into an IIT. This does not mean that rest of the students don’t get a
good-paying jobs.

Slide 2: Yes, this is true because we are never told about the true benefits of getting into an IIT and I
understood that when during my Engineering I used to sit with some of my friends in IITs and the
basic 3 differences that point out the main reasons of joining an IIT come into the picture:

 Application: We are in a habit of mugging everything taught to us and have this particular
question in our mind where will I use this in my real life. Where will I use this projectile
motion, where will this trigonometry be used, and where will this calculus be used? And I
spent my entire graduation thinking about the same thing but in an IIT every concept is
taught with its application, you see everything in front of you where concepts taught to you
are used. The high-class equipped labs are always open to the curious minds of students.
 Brainstorming: Many colleges just give projects for the sake of curriculum but not IITs, their
projects motivate you, and force you to come out and reach out to your batchmates by
asking questions, and discussing different concepts. IITs help you a lot in peer learning.
 Exposure: Last but not the least, IITs give you the best exposure you can have. Sitting with
one of the top minds of your country, and studying from one of the top professors of India
will not only help you grow academically but also it will help you grow as an individual.

Slide 3: JEE is not just for the sake of doing engineering, you will face many obstacles while
preparing for this exam that you will learn a lot. Mistakes are a part of our life, mistakes you do in
JEE will help you learn better in IITs, you will know what to do and what not to do? Now this second
question is very difficult, difficult in the sense that we all know the answer but we tend to forget it.
Believe me, JEE is one of the finest exams you will prepare which will make you remember each and
every lesson, each and every mistake you commit and it will always stop you from repeating it. Thus,
always remember every competitive exam you give is not only just for the sake of entering any
college or sake but for the learnings it brings along with it.

Slide 4: The journey of JEE starts the day you realize that you want to join one of the finest institutes
in the World: THE IITs. It then comes to the preparation of the exam JEE, you give your board exams
then give JEE mains. Qualified students from JEE mains then give JEE Advance which leads you to
your dream IIT/NIT.

Slide 5: Now let’s dive into the two exams we named in the previous slide JEE Mains and JEE
Advance. JEE mains is prepared by CBSE and managed by NTA. There are 2 JEE main exams: one for
students who wish to do BE or BTech and one for students willing to do B.Arch. The pattern has been
changed by NTA in 2021, JEE mains paper 1 consists of 75 questions: 25 from physics, chemistry, and
Mathematics, all the sections contain 10 questions with numerical value answers and the rest of the
questions in each section will be MCQ. Talking about the marking scheme, you get +4 for every
correct answer and -1 for every incorrect answer. Almost 9 lakh students sit for JEE mains

Slide 6: Yes, JEE advance does not have a fixed pattern. Out of those 9 lakh students only 1.5-2 lakh
students get selected for JEE Advanced. But the surprise that awaits them is that there is no fixed
pattern for this exam and the paper is set by IITs. The type of questions remains similar like there are
some single option correct questions, some multiple options correct questions, some numerical
value answer questions but the number of questions is never fixed. There are also 2 papers in JEE
Advance with 3 sections (PCM). Now the question that comes to the mind of everyone preparing for
this exam is Why does this exam has no fixed pattern? See, the main reason for this is so that people
cannot generalize anything about the exam. A same pattern may give your ideas of generalization of
some chapters or topics. Another reason for the same is that some students are not comfortable
with a particular pattern so the change in pattern every year is a surprise to every student and with a
test of understanding of concepts JEE Advance also becomes a test of checking how you react in
difficult situations.

Slide 7: So before diving into What are the prerequisites of JEE let us do an activity to understand
the competition in JEE. As I told that almost 12 lakh students register for JEE and only 2-3% of
students succeed in this exam. The problem is that we as students don’t understand the level of
competition, we face in JEE and hence don’t take it seriously. So, let’s perform a small activity to
understand how competitive you all need to be. I have a deck of cards here with me and I have
divided it into 26 red and 26 black cards. Now 26 of you will have one black card and I will have all
the red cards. The catch in this is that the student with one black and one red card will be awarded
with a prize money of say 100crs. (Distribute the cards). I will give only one red card to one student
Now point out a student and ask how much will you give me to have this red card from me. He says
a certain amount. Now Take out one red card and tear it. Now there are 25 red cards and 26 black
cards. Earlier there was a chance that all of you will get something but now one of you will go empty
handed. Students will start increasing the price. Now destroy at least 8-10 cards. See as I am
destroying each card you all are ready to give me more. That’s the level of competition you will face
in JEE, that one student who will be ready to give more will have a higher chance to get into an IIT.
This is the real scenario in JEE.

Slide 8: Okay we have had a discussion of what JEE is, What JEE mains and JEE Advanced are, and
and What are the benefits of joining an IIT but then comes that most important part what should I
do, what does it take, what are the prerequisites of this exam? Many of you might be thinking that I
haven’t scored well in my 10th board or I am not a topper in my school, How would I be able to crack
JEE Advance? The answer is simple, it doesn’t matter how much you have scored in the past, it
doesn’t matter how many academic prizes you have got in your school life. Only 5 traits are required
for you to succeed in JEE:

 Discipline: The first and most important one is discipline. Being disciplined would mean
never lie to yourself and know your worth. You would never skip any class, complete the
work given to you on time and never hesitate in asking doubts. Always remember “You don’t
need to be smarter than the rest, you just need to be more disciplined than the rest”
 Consistent: Consistent would mean revising everything daily. I remember that when I was
preparing for JEE, I was not consistent, I prepared with my whole heart in the beginning but
soon I stopped revising concepts properly and that was the moment I failed JEE because
every next concept you read is linked to the previous concept you did.
 Diligent: Being diligent is the most important quality you need to have. This is not just for JEE
but also for any work you are doing in your life. You can never successfully complete
anything until and unless you are diligent.
 Confident: Always have a you can do it attitude. There will be times in your life especially
while preparing something like JEE where you will think that you wont be able to do it but
most of the times that is the point closer to achieving greater heights in the work you are
doing. Confidence not only shows your positive attitude but it also increases your
concentration and seriousness towards anything.
 Punctual: Never ever think “I will do this tomorrow” This kind of attitude doesn’t work not
only in JEE but everywhere. The work, the practice papers, the revision should never remain
pending. Punctuality shows that you respect your own commitments, you respect your
dream of getting into an IIT.

Slide 9: I won’t stand here and say that JEE is not difficult, yes it is but a different kind of difficult, if
you are not punctual, JEE is very difficult, if you are not confident, yes JEE is very difficult if you are
not working on time and seriously this exam is surely very difficult. All succeeding in JEE or any exam
you give in your life requires a positive perspective towards it. Concepts are easy all it requires is you
to think uniquely. It surely has a vast syllabus and no one I repeat no one can stop you if you apply
these traits in your life and start working on your speed and accuracy.

Slide 10: Now let us come to the part of how to start your preparation. Yes, success stories play a
very important role in motivating you to work hard. You need to know how many hours of
dedication it requires, what is the end result, how well you will groom yourself in your life. Talking to
an IITian will surely motivate you a lot. It helps you learn the difficulties that will come in your path
while you go for JEE. But at the same time you should be well aware of what not to do. On one hand
where success stories motivate you for going ahead, failure stories will help you learn from other’s
mistakes, which believe me is very crucial. Where success stories will give you a message, failure
stories will give you learnings and in a way warn you whenever you are going on a wrong path.

Another important aspect that one needs to keep in their mind before preparing for JEE is that
quantity wont make you succeed, its quality that is required. Its like no matter if you solve 100
mathematics questions daily, 10 good questions can make you learn more than what those 100 did.
Quality material, faculty and institute will lead you to a way you would have never thought of. Its
same as in a t-twenty match, making a 100 on 80-90 balls doesn’t matter than making over 25-30
runs in an over. Make quality your measure and you will definitely win.

Slide 11: Now you have learnt from other’s mistake, you have done everything related to why you
should give JEE and prepare for it. Your mind is well prepared for it. Now comes to the final 4 steps:

 Plan: From all the learnings and discussions you had start planning on how you will walk
towards your goal. How much syllabus needs to be covered in how much time, how many
mocks you need to do and how many questions and from what resource needs to be done.
 Prioritize: From the very beginning of your preparation, you will start realizing which topic is
difficult and which one is easy for you. Never ever run from the obstacles. If you find a topic
difficult, revise it till the day it becomes easy for you but also revise other topics in hand.
Prioritize your health over everything. With that start prioritizing each and every subject and
topic in hand.
 Manage: You have a lot on your plate, now comes the responsibility to manage everything.
Make a proper timetable and abide by it. I know it would be difficult for almost everyone but
that’s the fun in this. Challenge yourself again and again.
 Execute: Now that you have planned everything, set your prioritizing everything and know
how to manage everything, just execute. Start doing your work from day one, never leave
anything for any other day. Execution is the most important thing you need to do.

Slide 12: I would have made up a story and stood in front of you and repeated everything I covered
in 10 slides but I believe until and unless a story is real and comes from someone who has
experienced and lived in that story. So what happened is that I did everything I was not supposed to.
After my 10th when I scored an average cgpa 9.2, I decided to prepare for entering the gate everyone
was entering, JEE. And then I bluntly joined an institute that was considered the best. The best
because of the results it gave. The most popular institute of our city but soon I realized that the
institute was always result-oriented. All they needed was 5-6 students out of a batch of 200 to crack
an IIT so that they can publish the result in some newspaper and grab attention of students like me. I
was in like top 10 students among the 200 in the first 5 tests and then my doubts started piling up
and slowly I got deviated because of all this and teachers started thinking of me as a non-serious
student and stopped solving my doubts because I was not their star performer. Soon I was
completely out from preparing for JEE and failed. I prepared for IPU entrance exam and got admitted
into one of the colleges of IPU. Now this failure was a learning for me and let me tell you first that it
is not okay to fail if you are doing what I did, I stopped preparing, I stopped diving in my doubts and
didn’t ask anyone what to do. That moved me almost 2 years apart from my friends.

Slide 13: The most important lesson I learnt was: Proper Counseling. Asking people correct doubts
and know why do you want to go on a certain path and then join an institute which is student-
oriented and not result oriented. Joining an institute which focuses not only on your studies but also
on your physical and mental fitness and before making you learn the concepts they make you learn
what difficulties you will face and how you should balance everything

Slide 14: See while preparing for any exam there’s a time when you just want to quit. I won’t just
stand here and start lashing out that you should not be demotivated. It is a sign that you are serious.
Now this also doesn’t mean that you should always be demotivated. There are times when you feel
like everything you are doing is wrong and you won’t succeed, it’s natural for a human to feel that
way. The problem is what you should do. Now here are three things that will surely help you out
coming out of a phase like that:

 Talk: now every one of us is very scared to lash out what we are thinking and talking seems
to be very easy but actually it is very difficult. We usually think that what the other person
would think about me. Even while talking to our parents we think what my dad would think
what my mom would think what my elder sibling would think of me. The first thing that
needs to be done by you is stop thinking. Whenever you feel like demotivated the first
person you should reach out to is your parents. I know the hesitation, I have personally
experienced that what it feels like confronting your parents about your feelings but believe
me you will hesitate only for the first time and you will definitely learn a lot and have a
motivation of your life. The second person you can reach out should be your teacher

Slide 15: These are the steps involved in getting into FITJEE
Slide 16: we looked into the entrance process of FITJEE and the best part is this counselling part. We
don’t believe to encourage students to do JEE, we clear their doubts and let them decide what they
want with their future.
