phenomena that occur in the atmosphere location of the Philippines in relation to the climate, weather,
and seasons.
I.Objectives:
MELC:
 Discuss how energy from the Sun interacts with the layers of the atmosphere. (S7ES-IVd-3)

Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air called the ______________

____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ HERE!!!!!

A T M O S P HERE
1. Held by gravity and protects the planet by absorbing UV radiation.
2. All weather develops in here.
3. It is a mixture of gases.
4. About ¾ pf this is Nitrogen. Almost ¼ is Oxygen. The rest of it is carbon dioxide and other
gases.

C. Lesson Proper/Presentation of the Lesson:

1. Brief introduction:
The atmosphere is divided into five layers based on temperature change with elevation: troposphere,
stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. The troposphere is the layer nearest to the
Earth’s surface and this is also the zone where weather occurs. Above the tropopause (a boundary that
acts as a ceiling to the weather zone) lies the stratosphere. The stratosphere contains a layer called
ozone (𝑂3). Ozone is an excellent absorber of the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun.
2. Students will work individually and they will be given a reading material and after a given minutes of
time some of the students will arrange the pictures on where they are belong. (See the attached
activity sheet).
Group 1 – Label the Atmospheric Layers
Group 2 – Events/ occurences in the Atmospheric Layers
Group 3 – Composition of Gases in Each Atmospheric layers
Group 4 – Temperature Vs. Altitude
D. Discussion (Indicate questions that will elicit answers from the students. Use HOTS as basis for formulating
questions)
Guide Questions:
1. What are the different layers of the atmosphere?
2. How do they differ in terms of height (altitude), temperature and events or phenomenon occurs in
each layers?
3. What is the relationship between temperature and height in the troposphere? stratosphere?
mesosphere? thermosphere? exosphere?
4. In which layer is temperature increasing with increasing altitude?
5. In which layer is temperature decreasing with increasing altitude?

E. Generalization
What have we learned?
The atmosphere is composed of different
mixtures of gases, water vapor, dust, and
other minute solid particles that are essential
in the formation of clouds.
The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of five
different layers: troposphere, stratosphere,
mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphe

Layers of the Atmosphere

1. Troposphere – is the layer closest to
Earth’s surface
 The temperature just above the ground is hotter than the temperature high above.
 Weather occurs (rain, snow, clouds, typhoons)
 Contains most of the water vapour
 Air is constantly moving.
2. Stratosphere – is the layer of air that extends to about 50 km from Earth’s surface.
 Air is very stable
 Jet aircraft fly
 Home of the ozone layer (it absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful radiation that would
otherwise be dangerous to plant and animal life)
3. Mesosphere – layer between 50 km and 80 km above the Earth’s surface
 Air is very thin and cold.
 Meteors or rock fragments burn up
4. Thermosphere – is between 80 km and 110 km above the Earth
 Space shuttles fly in this area and it is also where the auroras are found. Auroras are
caused when the solar wind strikes gases in the atmosphere above the Poles.
5. Exosphere – the upper limit of our atmosphere, merges into space
 Satellites are stationed area, 500 km to 1000 km in this from Earth

F. Application
Without the protective layer of gases that make up earth’s atmosphere, the harsh conditions of the
solar system would render the planet a barren, lifeless husk like the moon. The earth’s atmosphere protects
and sustains the planet inhabitants by providing warmth and absorbing harmful solar rays. In need to survive
the atmosphere traps the sun’s energy and wards off many of the dangers of space.addition to containing the
oxygen and carbon dioxide, which living things

G. Evaluation
Directions: Choose the correct answer from the words inside the parenthesis.

3. The layer after the mesosphere where air is very thin is called the __________.
a. exosphere b. stratosphere c. thermosphere d. troposphere).
4. The layer in which the temperature drops as altitude increases is called the ________
a. exosphere b. thermosphere c. stratosphere d. troposphere).
5. The layer where meteors burn _______.
a. troposphere b. stratosphere c. mesosphere d. thermosphere).
