LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 7

I: Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
a. Identify the different layers of then atmosphere.
b. Describe each layer and their role to atmosphere and earth itself.

II: Subject Matter

Topic: Layers of the Atmosphere
Curriculum Guide: Discuss how energy from the sun interacts with the layers of
Atmosphere (S7ES-IVd-5)
References: Teachers Guide Pg. ____, Science Link 8 pg. 184, www.nasa.gov,
Materials: Manila Papers, Illustrations, Chalk and Board

III: Procedure:
a. REVIEW:
The teacher will ask questions about the lesson Atmosphere and the different gases in
the atmosphere.
b. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Direction: Put a like sign if the statement is TRUE and dislike sign if the statement is
FALSE.
_____1. Weather developed in the troposphere layer.
_____2. Thermosphere is the highest layer of the atmosphere.
_____3. Stratosphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere.
_____4. Airplane flies above the troposphere.
_____5. Exosphere is the boundary of Outer space and the Earth’s atmosphere.
c. MOTIVATION
Picture Analysis:

- What can you observe about the picture?

- Why do you think the Earth is using an umbrella? What do you think the function
of the umbrella?
- What does the umbrella represent?
d. DISCUSSION
The teacher proceeds to further discussion.
*Class, from the picture presented to you awhile ago, the umbrella serves as the
atmosphere of the earth that protects the earth from harmful radiations and materials
coming from outer space. But did you know that the Earth’s Atmosphere is divided in
to different layers? So today class were going to discuss the different layer of
Atmosphere.

Layers of Atmosphere

TROPOSPHERE
- 10-15 km above Earth’s surface.
- It is where weather developed.
- Where greenhouse effect occur.
STRATOSPHERE
- 15-50 km above Earth’s Surface
- It is where airplane flies.
- Contains a thin layer of ozone molecules that protect us from harmful radiation.
MESOSPHERE
- 50-80 km above Earth’s Surface
- Cold layer of the atmosphere
- In this layer the atmosphere is very rarefied nevertheless thick enough to slow
down and burn the meteors.
THERMOSPHERE
- 80 km above the earth’s surface to outer space.
- Hottest layer of the atmosphere.
- Auroras occur in this layer
EXOSPHERE
- This is the upper limit of the atmosphere.
- It is the boundary of the earth’s atmosphere and the outer space.
- Many satellite orbits in this layer.
- It extends from the top of the thermosphere up to 10,000 km.
e. DEEPENING
1. Activity
Diection: Selected students will paste the cut outs in to what layer do they belong.

640 km

80 km

50 km

15km

2. Group Activity
Direction: Group yourselves into five. Each group will be given one layer and write the
different characteristics of the layer. After 3 min. one representative will report to the class.
TROPOSPHERE STRATOSPHERE MESOSPHERE THERMOSPHERE EXOSPHERE
