Learning Task 6.1
Answer the following questions.
1. What is assessment? Of what importance is assessment to instructions?
Assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. It is the
process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase
students' learning and development.
Based instruction helps guide the planning, implementation, and assessment of student learning.
2. What is authentic assessment? How does it make the teaching-learning processes effective and meaningful?
Authentic assessment is where students thoughtfully apply their acquired skills to a new situation or
environment. Assessments are authentic if they are realistic, require judgement and innovation and assess students'
ability to effectively use their knowledge or skills to complete a task.
By incorporating active learning into the curriculum, teachers can transform their classroom into a “real” one with an
exciting, dynamic learning environment.
3. What is performance-based assessment? How does it compare with the traditional assessment?
Performance-based assessment is a system of learning and assessment that allows students to demonstrate their
knowledge and skills in a learning environment that embraces their higher-order thinking skills, as well as relating it to
real-world situations.
Traditional assessments refer to conventional methods of testing, usually standardized and use pen and paper with
multiple-choice, true or false or matching type test items.
Traditional Assessment Authentic Assessment
Easy to score; Teachers can evaluate students more quickly and easily. Harder to evaluate

4. What are portfolios? How are portfolios used in assessment?

A purposeful collection of student work that exhibits the student’s efforts, progress and achievements in one or more
areas. The collection must include student participation in selecting contents, the criteria for selection, the criteria for
judging merit and evidence of student self-reflection.
5. What are the guidelines in preparing portfolios?
 IDENTIFYING TEACHING GOALS TO ASSESS THROUGH THE PORTFOLIO.
 INTRODUCING THE IDEA OF PORTFOLIOS TO YOUR CLASS.
 SPECIFYING PORTFOLIO CONTENT.
 GIVE CLEAR AND DETAILED GUIDELINES FOR PORTFOLIO PRESENTATION.
 NOTIFY OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES.
 PREPARATION PERIOD.
 ASSESSING THE PORTFOLIOS AND GIVING FEEDBACK.
6. What are scoring rubrics? What are the scoring rubrics that teachers use in the classroom? Give examples.
A rubric is a coherent set of criteria for students' work that includes descriptions of levels of performance quality on
the criteria.
The teachers to evaluate students' performance in situations that more closely replicate real life than an isolated test.

Learning Task 6.2

Define the following using concept map. Write the explanation of the concept maps.
1. Assessment

Assessment Gathering Analyzing evidence

 To gather relevant information about student performance or progress, or to determine student interests to
make judgments about their learning process.

2. Authentic Assessment

Performance – based
Authentic assessments
Assessment

Portfolio assessments

 To accurately evaluate what a student has learned, an assessment method must examine his or her
collective abilities.
Learning Task 6.3
Write the answer to the core question on the ladder web.

Q: What does authentic assessment do when

applied to instruction?

1. It’s realistic.

2. It requires judgement and innovation.

3. It asks the student to “do” the subject.

4. It replicates or simulates the contexts in which adults are “tested”

in the workplace, in civic life, and in personal life.

5. It assesses the student’s ability to efficiently and effectively use a

repertoire of knowledge and skill to negotiate a complex task.

6. It allows appropriate opportunities to rehearse, practice, consult resources, and

get feedback on and refine performances and products.
Learning Task 6.4
With the use of Venn diagram, compare and contrast performance assessment and portfolio assessment.

1 and
2 = Differences
3 = similarities Similarities
1. Performance Assessment 2. Portfolio Assessment

Performance assessment:
This assessment measures how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems.
Portfolio assessment: Is a collection of student works that are associated with standards you are required to learn.
While portfolio assessments focus on self-reflection and evidence of growth over time through samples of work
products, performance assessments require students to directly apply what they have learned in realistic situations.
