ABSTRACT

There are numerous issues affecting human communities nowadays. Good

mental health is obvious for a healthy people. Mental disorder is very dangerous

and responsible for many psychological diseases and for maladjustment also.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of mental health issues on

the academic performance of gr. There are 12 GAS B students. The sample was

made up of 40 survey participants. High school grade point average is positively

connected to well-being and poorly related to suicidal attempts and ideas.

Optometry students, as well as non-heterosexual students, demonstrated higher

risky behaviors than medical students.

The COVID-19 pandemic has a severe impact on education due to the long-term

pandemic situation and costly measures such as lockdown and stay-at-home

restrictions. The findings of our study highlight the urgent need to develop

interventions and preventive strategies to address the mental health of students.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale of the Study

The mental well-being of GAS B students was a growing concern even before

the COVID-19 pandemic, with increasing numbers of students experiencing

mental health problems. The purpose of this article was to study factors related

with issues among Grade 12 GAS B students during the pandemic.

Statement of the Problem

The impact of student’s academic performances, and how it affects mental

health issues on academic performances during pandemic. Since most of the

subjects are hard, learning them online is difficult. Students believe that fulfilling

their responsibilities in online learning is challenging. Students with poor health

are more prone to failing grades, leaves school, or drop out.

Our key research question is, "Has the mental health of high school students

improved throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and what factors contributed to

that change?" Furthermore, we hoped to identify potential techniques to

preventing mental health worsening from the individuals.

Significance of the Study

The research is necessary since it is the first of its type, and it is intended

to study the influence of Mental Health Issues on Gr 12 - GAS B students. The

present study will be valuable for educators in general and teachers in particular

since the understanding of mental health issues under study will allow educators

and teachers to develop their educational program for GAS B students while

keeping these aspects in mind.

Scope and Delimitations

This study will only include 40 respondents from Grade 12 GAS B students to

study issues concerned to difficulties among students during the pandemic.

The focus of this thesis is to determine students' perspectives of this topic

based on their ability as students. As a result, this study solely sought their

thoughts and opinions on the impact of mental health issues and how they will

deal with it, as well as how the students raised their voices to communicate their

feelings in terms of research study, and how they handled their concerns.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or

conclusions, methodologies and others. Those that were included in this chapter

helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present

study.

Related Literature

Social Functioning and Academic Success

Mental health problems in children and adolescents are strongly associated with

academic performance, social well-being, and social problems. Research has

shown correlations between mental health problems and academic struggles

(Battaglia et al., 2017; Brannlund et al., 2017). While other studies argue mental

health is not the main contributing factor to negative academic performance

(Mcleod et al., 2012; Verboom et al., 2014). When analyzing the data of 6,315

adolescents from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, McLeod

and their team (2012) found depression alone may not lead to lower academic

achievement. In their findings they noticed students with depression had a lower

high school GPA, however this was not the case once other behavior problems

were controlled for. Other factors such as substance use and delinquency were

better predictors of lower academic achievement. You could argue depression

could increase the likelihood of adolescents having problems with substance use

and delinquency as it affects their social functioning.

Related Studies

Some mental health indicators are identified as early as preschool can help

predict future academic outcomes. In a longitudinal study done by Battaglia et al.,

(2017) they found children who experienced persistent separation anxiety

between ages 1.5 and 6 years went on to show more internalizing symptoms,

worse overall academic achievement and poorer physical health

later in childhood and preadolescence. The study looked at 1,290 children who

experienced separation anxiety and took assessments at ages 8, 10, 12, and 13

years. Similarly, in a study of 592 students in Sweden by Waenerlund and their

team (2016) they found students had problematic experiences in 3rd grade were

two times more likely to exhibit internalization, externalization, social or hyper-

activity problems in 6th grade. Along with an increase in problem behaviors,

there was also a decrease in prosocial behaviors.

Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The study utilized the qualitative and quantitative research methodology.

Qualitative because this study will have experiment the impact of the pandemic

on the mental health of students and factors associated . It was likewise

quantitative because it _will provide an insight to the parents to deal effectively

with their children so that they will be able to develop an understanding of the

importance of mental health.

Research Design

This study is quantitative research, and the researchers used a descriptive

method design because it assesses the common mental health problems

(depression and anxiety) encountered by the students. A semi structured survey

guide was designed with the purpose of assessing the mental health status of

students quantitatively. These constructs were derived from existing literature

identifying prominent factors affecting students’ mental health on academic

performances.

Research Environment

Our aim is to focus on the mental health issues that high school students face.

As a result, various difficulties were found through a student survey. In addition,

several procedures are included to control for well before mental health

concerns. As a result, maintaining mental health is a problem for people. It is

critical for a person to be mentally healthy in order to be well-adjusted in this

environment.

The Research Respondents

This study will only include 40 respondents from Grade 12 GAS B students to

study issues concerned to difficulties among students during the pandemic.

Despite the fact that the majority of participants expressed concerns about their

academic performance, nearly half of them reported lower stress levels due to

academic pressure and class workload since the pandemic began. This could be

attributed, in part, to measures made by teachers and the school to ease

students' rapid adjustment to distant learning.

The Research Instruments

The questions aimed to capture the ways that students have been coping

with the issues associated with the pandemic situation and how it effect on their

academic performance.

1. What kind of mental health issue do you normally face when learning online?

2. Does this issue causing you to spend time away from your family, friends, or

partner? Why or why not?

3. Are you capable of home- based online learning? Why or why not?

4. Do you have any household duties? How do you manage to cope with your

online classes and household chores?

5. Does this have a significant impact on you and your grades? Why or why not?
6. What would the consequences be for your academic performance if you don't

overcome this issue right away?

7. Can you afford to face the possible consequences? Why or why not?

8. Have you tried to resolve this issue before (grade 11)? What happened?

9. What's your plan this time for resolving this issue?

10. What improvements have you developed based on the results of dealing with

that issue?

Data Gathering Procedure

We conducted interview surveys with 40 students in the gr. 12 GAS B

students to understand the impact of the pandemic on their mental health and

academic performances. The data were analyzed through quantitative methods.

After given permission, the researchers explained the purpose of the study to the

selected respondents and then we made sure each participant corresponds to

their predefined criteria. The researchers collected the data by means of survey

questionnaire. Percentages of participants who indicated negative ratings (ie,

mild, moderate, or severe influence) on these questions were calculated and

ranked in a descending order. Participation was voluntary and participants were

not compensated.
