Problem 1
Find the allowable tensile force that the multiple-riveted structural joint as shown in Fig can
transmit. Also find the efficiency of this joint. All rivets are 22 mm in diameter and thickness
of plate is 20 mm. The allowable stresses are 150 MPa in tension, 100 MPa in shear, and 330
MPa in bearing.

Shear of bolt:
𝜋
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 (𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟) × ( 𝑑𝑏 2 ) × 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑟 𝑑𝑜𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟 × 𝑛𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑡𝑠
4
𝜋
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 100 × ( 222 ) × 1 × 3 = 114.04 𝐾𝑁
4

Bearing on plate:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 (𝑏𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔) × (𝑑𝑏 × 𝑡) × 𝑛𝑜 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑡𝑠
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 330 × (22 × 20) × 3 = 435.6 𝐾𝑁

Tension of plate (without hole):

𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 150 × (200 × 20) = 600 𝐾𝑁

Tension of plate:
𝑑ℎ = 𝑑𝑏 + 3 𝑚𝑚 = 22 + 3 = 25 𝑚𝑚

𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 (𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛) × {(𝐿 − (𝑑ℎ × 𝑛𝑜 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠)} × 𝑡

𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 150 × {(200 − (25 × 3)} × 20 = 375 𝐾𝑁

Problem 2
Find the allowable tensile force that the multiple-riveted structural joint as shown in Fig can
transmit. Also find the efficiency of this joint. All rivets are 22 mm in diameter, thickness of
main plate is 20 mm and cover plate is 12 mm. The allowable stresses are 150 MPa in tension,
100 MPa in shear, and 330 MPa in bearing.

Shear of bolt:
𝜋
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 100 × ( 222 ) × 1 × 3 = 114.04 𝐾𝑁
4

Bearing on main plate:

𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 330 × (22 × 20) × 3 = 435.6 𝐾𝑁
Bearing on cover plate:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 330 × (22 × 12) × 3 = 261.36 𝐾𝑁

Tension of plate (without hole):

𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 150 × (200 × 20) = 600 𝐾𝑁
Tension of main plate:
𝑑ℎ = 𝑑𝑏 + 3 𝑚𝑚 = 22 + 3 = 25 𝑚𝑚
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 150 × {(200 − (25 × 3)} × 20 = 375 𝐾𝑁
Tension of cover plate:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 150 × {(200 − (25 × 3)} × 12 = 225 𝐾𝑁

Problem 3
Find the allowable tensile force that the multiple-riveted structural joint as shown in Fig can
transmit. Also find the efficiency of this joint. All rivets are 22 mm in diameter, thickness of
main plate is 13 mm and cover plates are 7 mm. The allowable stresses are 140 MPa in tension,
100 MPa in shear, and 340 MPa in bearing.

Shear of bolt:
𝜋
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 100 × ( 222 ) × 2 × 5 = 380.13 𝐾𝑁
4
Bearing on main plate:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 340 × (22 × 13) × 5 = 486.2 𝐾𝑁
Bearing on cover plate:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 340 × (22 × 7) × 5 × 2 = 523.6 𝐾𝑁
Tension of plate (without hole):
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 140 × (250 × 13) = 455 𝐾𝑁
Tension of main plate:
𝑑ℎ = 𝑑𝑏 + 3 𝑚𝑚 = 22 + 3 = 25 𝑚𝑚

Sec 1-1: Sec 2-2:

𝑃 = 140 × {(250 − (25 × 2)} × 13 = 364 𝐾𝑁 2𝑃

𝑃− = 140 × {(250 − (25 × 3)} × 13
5
𝑃 = 530.83 𝐾𝑁

Tension of cover plate:

Sec 2-2: Sec 1-1:

𝑃 = 140 × {(250 − (25 × 3)} × 7 × 2 3𝑃

𝑃− = 140 × {(250 − (25 × 2)} × 7 × 2

load P if the allowable stresses are 90 MPa in tension, 80 MPa in shear, and 120 MPa in bearing.

Shear of bolt:
𝜋
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 80 × ( 252 ) × 1 × 4 = 157.08 𝐾𝑁
4
Bearing on main plate 1:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 120 × (25 × 14) × 4 = 168 𝐾𝑁
Bearing on main plate 2:
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 120 × (25 × 10) × 4 = 120 𝐾𝑁

Tension of plate 2 (without hole):
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 90 × (150 × 10) = 135 𝐾𝑁
Tension of main plate 1:
𝑑ℎ = 𝑑𝑏 + 3 𝑚𝑚 = 25 + 3 = 28 𝑚𝑚
Sec 1-1:
𝑃 = 90 × {(130 − (28 × 1)} × 14 = 128.52 𝐾𝑁
Sec 2-2:
𝑃
𝑃− = 90 × {(130 − (28 × 2)} × 14
4
𝑃 = 124.32 𝐾𝑁
Sec 3-3:

𝑃− = 90 × {(130 − (28 × 1)} × 14
4
𝑃 = 514. .08 𝐾𝑁

Tension of main plate 2:

Sec 3-3:
𝑃 = 90 × {(150 − (28 × 1)} × 10 = 109.8 𝐾𝑁
Sec 2-2:
𝑃
𝑃− = 90 × {(150 − (28 × 2)} × 10
4
𝑃 = 112.8 𝐾𝑁
Sec 1-1:
3𝑃
𝑃− = 90 × {(150 − (28 × 1)} × 10
