ACTIVITY 6
MUSCULAR SYSTEM

Muscles, which are composed of contractile fibers are organs of locomotion because
they produce movement. There are three basic types of muscle tissue; skeletal, smooth and
cardiac. There are over 600 individual muscles in the human body. Muscle tissue comprises
about 45% of the total body weight of an adult.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To be able to describe the different muscle tissues of the body
2. To understand the different functions of the muscles in the body
3. To identify the muscle, its corresponding location and movements
4. To identify the Types of Muscle Tissue
MATERIALS:

- Smooth Muscle - Definition, Function and Location | Biology (biologydictionary.net)

A. Describe the following muscle tissues of the body.

1. Smooth Muscle - a type of muscle tissue which is used by various systems to apply
pressure to vessels and organs. Smooth muscle is composed of sheets or strands of
smooth muscle cells. These cells have fibers of actin and myosin which run through the
cell and are supported by a framework of other proteins.

2. Cardiac Muscle - is only found in your heart, where it performs coordinated contractions
that allow your heart to pump blood through your circulatory system.

3. Skeletal Muscle - skeletal muscle is a specialized contractile tissue found in animals

which functions to move an organism’s body. Skeletal muscle is comprised from a series
of bundles of muscle fibers, surrounded by protective membranes.

C. Write the Word True if the statements is correct and False if otherwise. Write your answers
before each number.

False 1. In an isotonic contraction, muscle tension increases but the muscles

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, the human body contains more than 650 individual muscles which are
attached to the skeleton, which provides the pulling power for us to move around.
The main job of the muscular system is to provide movement for the body. The
muscular system consists of three different types of muscle tissues: skeletal, cardiac,
smooth. Each of these different tissues has the ability to contract, which then allows
body movements and functions.

The muscular system is an important part of the human body because it uses muscles
in everything you do. They regulate your breathing and heartbeat, aid digestion, and
allow you to move. Muscles, like the rest of your body, will grow if you exercise and
eat a healthy diet.
