ACTIVITY
6:
Read the selection and answer the analysis based on
your moral reasoning.

In Europe, a woman was near death from cancer. One drug might save her, a
form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The
druggist was charging $2,000, ten times what the drug cost him to make. The sick
woman’s husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he
could only get together about half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife
was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him to sell it cheaper or let him pay
later. But the druggist said, “No.” The husband got desperate and broke into the
man’s store to steal the drug for his wife. Should the husband have done that? Why?
ANALYSIS:
1. Should Heinz steal the drug? Why or why not?
ANSWER: I think yes because he only wants to save his wife’s life and
saving a human life is a more fundamental value than the property rights
of another person.

2. If Heinz doesn’t love his wife, should he steal the drug for her? Why or why
not?
ANSWER: I think no because I believe that his emotions are controlling
his moral reasoning and if he had the time to process his emotion he
might come to the conclusion that there are other choices he can make
that might be better choices for him and his wife.

3. Suppose the person dying is not his wife but a stranger. Should Heinz steal
the drug for a stranger? Why or why not?
ANSWER: I think no because there are other ways to handle the
situation. If there is no other options then I think Heinz will also do that.

4. Suppose it is a pet animal he loves. Should Heinz steal to save the pet
animal? Why or why not?
ANSWER: I probably say no because it is against the law and I think
there are also other ways.

5. Why should people do everything they can to save another’s life?

ANSWER: Saving a human’s life is making us have stronger connections
with others and helps build a happier society for everyone.

6. It is against the law for Heinz to steal? Does that make it morally wrong?
Why? Or why not?
ANSWER: Yes it is against the law but it is not morally wrong because a
person’s life is more important than a person’s business.

7. Why should people generally do everything they can avoid breaking the law?
How does this relate to Heinz case?
ANSWER: Because the law is not always right, they also did injustice
decisions. Heinz has to choose between either breaking the law to save
a person’s life or obeying the law and letting his wife die. He has to
choose which is more important , the law or his wife’s life.
