Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Sheet

1- Calculate the cooling and heating load for the office described
below:
Location : Beriut
Occupancy : 180 people
Factory temperature : assume 5oC below outside ambient
temperature
35 business machines : each 220 Volt, 4 Amper
East & South walls : 20 cm concerete block (U = 1.5 W/m 2.K)
Nourth & West Walls: concrete block (U = 2.5 W/m 2.K)
Floor transmisson : Neglect
Ceiling : concrete block (U = 2.5 W/m2.K)
Lights: 60 W/m2
Windows: insulating glass 6 mm with light venetian blinds
Ventilation: 7 L/s per person
2- Calculate the cooling load, for the shown room 4.5 x 3x 3.5m, if given.
Inside design conditions: 26oC dbt & 50% Rh, outside design 43 oC
dbt & 26oC wbt, overall coefficient of heat transfer for glass, walls,
floor & ceiling are 6.42, 1.35, 1.6 & 1.6 W/m 2.K respectively .
Temperature in adjacent spaces is 8 oC below outside ambient
temperature. Glass area on south wall is 4 m 2. Solar additional
temperature difference 12K and maximum solar heat gain for glass
355 W/m2. Fresh air per person 10L/s. The room has four flouresent
lamps each of 60 Watts capacity and three persons each 117 Watts.
3- The Figure, given below, shows a paln of a hall which is to be air-
conditioned. The following information was obtained from a
preliminary survey:
Inside conditions: 24oC dbt & 50% Rh
Outside conditions: 35oC dbt & 26oC wbt
Occupancy : 20 persons
The ceiling height is 4.2 m. The hall has eight glass windows, each
1.2 x 3 m and one wooden door 1.5 x 2.1 m.
Adojoing building and spaces above ceiling and below floor are at
29oC. The overall heat transfer coefficient are as follows: 1.4 W/m 2.K
for all walls, 1.84 for floor and ceiling, 6 for glass windows and 3.2 for
wooden door. Estimate the grand total cooling load for the hall.
4- The supermarket shown in Figure below is located in Cairo. It is a
one story buliding with a basement used for storage. Construction
and conditions are as follows:
Ceiling : Gypsum board, (U = 0.5 W/m2.K)
Floor : 10 cm concrete on slab, (U = 1.9 W/m 2.K)
Walls: 10 cm face brick, 10 cm common brick, 5 cm insulation, 15
mm gypsum wall board, (U = 0.7 W/m2.K)
Front window: 6 mm single heat absorbing glass, 3m high.
Doors: 6 mm single clear glass. Occupancy: 60 people
Lighting : 30 W/m2 floor area, fluorescent fixtures
Outdoor ventilation rate: 5 L/s per person
Infilteration: Ventilation is assumed to prevent any signifcant
infilteration. Inside conditions : 26 oC dbt & 50% Rh store is open from

10 am to 8 pm. Determine cooling and heating load

5- The Figure, given below, shows a ground floor restaurant which is to
be equipped with a system capable of maintain comfort conditions in
the serving area during hot weather. The following information was
obtained from a preliminary survey:

Location: Beirut

Inside conditions: 27oC dbt & 50% Rh

Temperature in Kitchen: 43oC

Adjoining rooms and space above ceiling are at 30 oC

Seating capacity 50 persons with one cashier and 8 waiters in the

serving area. Equipment in the area to be conditioned are 5000 W
toaster and 3 gas coffee units with hoods. Lighting 6000 W. The
ceiling height of glass walls and door 2.4 m. the overall heat transfer
coefficients are 1.61 W/m2.K for all walls, 1.4 for floor and ceiling .2
for wooden door and 6 for glass. Heat from food per order 10 W
sensible and 10W latent. Estimate the cooling and heating load for
the restaurant. Design both summer and winter AC cycles

6- Figure shown below a sketch of the floor plan of a resturant

Outside conditions: 40oC dbt & 29 oC Wbt
Inside conditions: 27oC dbt & 50% Rh
Occupancy: 120 customers, seated and 10 employees, moderate activity.
Lighting: 7500 W. Outside walls are 20 cm brick, with gypsum” drywall” on
1 x 3 furring strips, with 20 mm rigid board insulation, between the furring
strips. Interior wall is 20 cm concrete block, plaster on both sides. Roof
overhang, where shown is 180 cm. Ceiling height 3.6m. Ventilated attic
under roof with 20 cm of mineral wool. Insulation blown over entire ceiling.
Attic peak temperature 60oC, Floor is asphalt tile on concrete slab on
ground. Temperature of mechanical room, Kitchen and rest rooms is 32 oC.
Calculate the cooling load and select the necessary component of the
AC system.
