1. INTRODUCTION
This method describes the apparatus (magnetic thickness gauges) and procedure for measuring
thicknesses of dry film paint or other coatings on steel.

This procedure covers the method for measuring the thickness of coatings applied to a steel
member by using the non-destructive coating thickness measurement.

8.0 SEQUENCE OF WORK
8.1 Dry Film Thickness Test
8.1.1 Locate an uncoated Area on the coated steel item being checked, or utilized an uncoated
base similar to that bearing the coating to be measured.
8.1.2 Place a standard shim/film of the required thickness on the uncoated base.
8.1.3 Adjust the standard gauge to indicate the known thickness of the shim/film, following the
manufactures instruction.
8.1.4 With the standard gauge adjusted and using the same base location, measure the thickness of a
second shim/film having a known thickness with +5 mil of the shim used for adjustment. The
standard gauge must indicate the known thickness of the second shim/film within ±0.2 mils.
8.1.5 Measure the paint film thickness at selected locations. Record the test locations and film
thickness. Check the accuracy of the Standard Gauge periodically during use.
NOTE:
- First Layer of Primer Coat should measure 25 Microns
- Second Layer of Primer Coat should measure 25 Microns
- First Layer of Top Coat should measure 25 Microns
- Second Layer of Primer Coat should measure 25 Microns
- Total Thickness of Coat is 100 Microns
- After every coating, the inspector must conduct Dry Film Test
PRECAUTIONS
8.2.1 Do not take readings closer than 0.5 inches from edges, holes, and inside corners, unless the
gauge has been calibrated for such use;
8.2.2 Do not use gauge on items of small radius of curvature unless the gauge has been calibrated
for such use;
8.2.3 Do not use gauge in heavy vibration areas;
8.2.4 Do not use gauge in heavy electrical areas, such as near arc-welding machines, or near any
magnetic fields;
8.2.5 Do not use gauge for any purpose for which it is not recommended
8.2.6 Do not use gauge in any position that is not recommended; or
8.2.7 Do not take readings in areas that are coated with dirt, grease, corrosion, flux, acid spots,
dross, oxides, etc. Coatings must be completely cured prior to performing thickness
measurements.
