Abstract: Youtube is becoming more and more popular to Vietnamese young people. The
development of being Youtuber is due to the number of Youtube users & channels; the
preferences of the young, the benefit of being Youtuber, the diversity of contents and the
inspiration of current Youtubers in Vietnam. The growth of making Youtube videos could develop
in the future as a professional job: Youtube content creator that anyone could pursue.
Keyword: Youtube, Youtuber, Vietnam, popular, young.

I. Introduction:
YouTube is a key international platform for socially-enabled media diffusion. According to
public statistics, more than 48 hours of video content is uploaded every minute and 3 billion
views are generated every day. To complement the content broadcast/consumer experience,
YouTube connects seamlessly with major online social networks (OSNs) such as Facebook,
Twitter, and Google+ to facilitate off-site diffu-sion. More importantly, YouTube serves as a
popular social net-work on its own, connecting registered users through subscriptions that notify
subscribers of social and content updates of the subscribed-to users. According to Ajay
Vidyasagar, the company’s Asia Pacific regional director, Vietnam is among the five most
dedicated markets of Youtube in the world in 2019 and 2020 based on the average time per day
spent watching YouTube videos. The five markets include Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Japan,
Thailand. According to a 2018 report by We Are Social, about 50 millions Vietnames social
media platforms users spent about seven hours a day using the Internet, of which 2.5 hours are
spent on social media on average. YouTube is the second most visited website in the country
with a user rate of 59%, just after Facebook with 61%, which also enjoys an especially dedicated
user base in Vietnam. Youtube becomes more and more popular to Vietnames.
There are some researches that are related to Youtube such as: The Youtube over time:
characterizing popularity growth of youtube videos (Figueiredo, F., Benevenuto, F., & Almeida,
J. M. (2011) ), Popularity Growth Patterns of YouTube Videos: A Category-based Study
(Shaiful Alam Chowdhury and Dwight Makaroff), Statistics and Social Network of YouTube
Videos 2008 16th International Workshop on Quality of Service (Cheng, X., Dale, C., & Liu, J.
(2008).)
However, researchers focused on research on Youtube's growth around the world or just give
specific statistics about Youtube videos. In this article, we will focus on the topic: YouTuber
become more popular with the young in Vietnam. In this paper, we will shed light our topic by

3
answering following question:
1. What is the number of Youtube users and youtuber in Vietnam
2. Do the young in Vietnam tend to prefer watching Youtube
3. What are the reasons and benefits of creating a Youtube channel?
4. Do YouTube channels have the content suitable to the tastes of viewers
5. What is the level of influence of YouTube channels on Vietnamese youth?
Besides, we also briefly mention about the development of Youtube content over the past decade
and also mentioned the development of YouTuber career in the future. We hope that we hope
that this research paper can partly explain the popularity of Youtube in Vietnam, and also help
those who are Youtuber or have the intention of making YouTube in the future have further
orientation on their future work.
The remaining part is organized as follows. Section II should be the related work before. Section
III describes our method of gathering information for YouTube videos and the dataset provided
in the next section. Section IV gives a brief introduction of YouTube videos over the past
decade. We also analyze why Youtube became more popular with the young in Vietnam in
Section V. Section VI presents the future of making Youtube videos. Finally, Section VII
concludes the paper and some future directions.

II. Literature review:

We have seen simultaneous works investigating YouTube and similar Web 2.0 sites in the past
years. M. Halvey and M. Keane were the first to study the social networking aspect in YouTube.
Mislove et al. studied four online social networking sites (Flickr, YouTube, LiveJournal and
Orkut) and confirmed the power-law, small world and scale-free properties of online social
networks. Researchers have taken advantage of the YouTube Data API to measure a variety of
metrics in relation to video popularity on YouTube. Figueiredo, F., Benevenuto, F., & Almeida,
J. M research about the youtube over time: characterizing popularity growth of youtube videos
(2011). Beside, Popularity Growth Patterns of YouTube Videos: A Category-based Study was
conducted by Shaiful Alam Chowdhury and Dwight Makar. A Statistics and Social Network of
YouTube Videos was mentioned on 16th International Workshop on Quality of Service (Cheng,
X., Dale, C., & Liu, J. (2008).)
However, our article focusses on once country: Vietnam and we just consider the young, not all
people in Vietnam. Therefore, our topic is narrower and more concentrated.

III. Methodology and Data:
1. Methodology:
We use three methods in this document. Firstly, we use an analyzing method to find out the
trending content in the last decade. Then we conduct surveys and interview people to find out the
question for our research question.
2. Data:
a. Survey:
Our survey was conducted by 144 people.
Gender: in a whole, the females account for the highest percentage in viewing youtube videos
with 69 percent out of 100 percent in our survey, next, the percentage of male viewer take the
second place with 29.2% and the least percentage belongs to the other gender.

- Age: people between the ages of 18 and 22 are the most likely to be interested in and participate
in this youtube poll, while those aged 25 to 30 are the opposite. In addition, the number of people
aged 15 to 18 and over 30 participating in this survey is equal and people who are in the 20s take
the 2ns place with 20.1 percent

5
- Location: people who live in HN joining this survey the most with 65%. The subsequence is
Bac ninh with 21% and we have the person who lives in other continent participating in this poll.

- Job: the alumnus take the first place of the number of people who engage in this survey with
65.3%. the second place belongs to workers with 27.8% The followings are student and people

IV. Overview about the content of Youtube from 2010-2020:

Looking back at the Youtube content from 10 year ago.
From 2010 to 2014 when making comedy vlogs was a trend. The youtube creators started
making vlogs and posted on their YouTube channels which really attracted a large amount of the
younger back then There are some well-known vloggers you perhaps familiar with like
Jvevermind (2.06m sub), Huyme (625k sub), An Nguy( 426k sub), Phở: (187k sub)
From 2015 to 2017 is a period of explosive time in terms of cosmetics and makeup. On Youtube
platform where started appearing many videos about reviewing cosmetic or teaching make up.
There are some most famous beauty blogger such as Changmakeup(1.25m sub); Tina beauty tips

6
(216k sub), Từ Thái Hà (106k sub).
2017 to now: Game streamers began to emerge in Vietnam, receiving a lot of attention mainly
from men. However, at the same time, there are many other youtube channels produced videos
that have a really bad content and truly achieved the infamous. There are famous streamers in
Vietnam as well as some infamous youtubers like Pew Pew (3.62m sub), Xemesis (973k sub),
Viruss (3.98 sub), Độ Mixi (4.46m sub), Misthy (5.77m sub), NTN (9.46m sub), Hưng vlogs
(2.97m sub)
We have researched and analyzed the content of the top 10 most-followed Youtube channels in
Vietnam (channels with content related to children have been removed) and obtained results for
the number of videos in the videos fields for the last three months as shown in the table below.
The pie chart shows the number of videos mainly focusing on more than 10 ranges of fields.
Looking at the pie chart, it is clear that more than three-quarters of the videos (74%) are made
about game shows with 998 videos out of the total 1347 videos. The content of these game
shows is usually about music and comedy programs. The most viewed video of this field has 12
million views. This was followed by Film and Music accounting for 5.3% and 5.2% respectively.
However, the most viewed video of the Music field has 45.16 million views. The remaining
fields make up only a very small proportion. Thus, the content of Youtube channels is becoming
more and more diverse, but music is still a topic of interest to many people.

Conclusion, the content of youtube videos is more and more diverse. On the one hand, the old

7
contents are developed in more aspects; on the other hand, there are a lot of new contents which
could create negative and positive effects.

V. Why Youtube become a trend with the young in Vietnam:

1. The number of YouTube users and YouTube Channels:
Vietnam currently has 45 million YouTube users, accounting for 50% of the population.
However, at present, the number of youtube channels in Vietnam still has no specific statistics.
2. The young tend to prefer watching YouTube.
The following pie chart illustrates how frequent young people in Vietnamese use youtube, from
very rarely to very often. Overall, nearly a half of them use youtube frequently, accounting for
40.3%. Approximately 37.5% of people use youtube very often, compared to about 20.8% of
those using it sometimes.

This pie chart shows the percentage of time people in Vietnam spend on Youtube. In general,
these 4 proportions have no big difference. 29.2% of users spend only 1-2 hours on YouTube,
accounting for the largest part while the lowest is 21.5% with users spending more than 3 hours
on YouTube. The number of people spending on YouTube from 0 to 1 hour and 2 to 3 hours
accounted for 26.4% and 22.9%, respectively.

8
With this figure, we could see that the young spend more and more time on Youtube platforms,
which create opportunities to develop Youtube channels for them.
3. The reasons & benefits of creating a YouTube Channel
Why do they become Youtubers?
HK15 answered that he was inspired by famous Youtubers and he also has hobbies of editing
videos and playing video games, while BLINGBABI who works as a beauty blogger said that
she wants to bring her makeup looks and my daily life closer to everyone. A Flying Andrew TV
said that the reason he started his youtube was because He liked watching cover videos on
Youtube.
Which content do they do for their videos? Why?
About HK15 said that he’s doing Gaming content as he loves playing games and he was inspired
by other YouTubers who also do this content; thinks that gaming is the easiest content to do right
now. The beauty blogger BLINGBABI is making this content since she has knowledge in the
beauty field and wants to share it with everyone. Besides, she also loves the feeling of doing
makeup in front of the camera. A Flying Andrew TV Youtuber who is doing content of Daily life
& film said that the reason that he creates videos is that he wants to keep memories.
Benefits when they become Youtubers
HK15 suggests that being a Youtuber helps him be able to do what he likes and give him
opportunities to earn extra income. Besides that he believes that this job will provide him more
opportunities to access jobs with big companies such as Asus, Hanoicomputer, MSI and so so.
The last one is that he could learn how to control words, gain confidence to speak in front of a
crowd. BLINGBABI Youtuber said that the big benefit to her is to satisfy her hobby. A Flying
Andrew TV youtuber said that having a youtube channel helps him to be able to look back on
life, promote himself and gives him more job opportunities.

9
From the views of Youtuber that we interviewed, we can see that they are really keen on making
Youtube videos or have their purpose to create their own Youtube channel. Besides, being a
Youtuber also provides them with many opportunities to develop themself. Therefore, this is one
of the reasons that YouTube is growing with young people
4. YouTube channels that have the content suitable to the tastes of viewers
On the one hand, the Report about content of these YouTube channels is considered a trend in
2020 (by Google) was released in Dec 2020. This listing was led by a Gaming Youtuber
MixingGaming with more than 4 million subscribers. In the top ten trending Youtubers, there are
6 channels about film, 1 channel about food, 1 channel about music and 2 channels about
gaming..
On the other hand, we have the following bar chart about favorite content YouTube viewers
often watch. It shows that music is what YouTube users prefer to watch the most, accounting for
82.6%. It is followed by some other categories, which also have impressive percentages such as
food, film, game and vlog. These are all assessed as a trend in Vietnam in 2020. Although
beauty, game shows, fashion and health are out of trend predictions, they have earned a
significant number of viewers, which even increasing rapidly as well as having potential
competitiveness to others.

The content of Youtuber is more and more suitable for the taste of the young in Vietnam, which
is one of the reasons that more and more young people prefer watching videos on Youtube.

10
5. The level of influence of YouTube channels on Vietnamese youth:
The percentage of viewers who follow the reviews or instructions of those Youtube channels:
Out of 144 survey participants, 40 people did not answer the question, 10 answered no, the rest
94 answered yes, accounting for about 62.5%.
Some of the activities that survey participants did as: activities related to life (like: green
lifestyle, orderly & economical lifestyle, reasonable ways of saving), beauty (such as: based on
lipstick, skin care reviews to choose the right product for themselves), food (for example: after
watching some food reviews, decide to try those foods or make the dishes following their recipe)
or fitness (like weight loss exercises, eat clean)
YouTubers gradually become both instructors and inspirators to their viewers. Perhaps that is the
reason why being a YouTuber is now getting more and more popular.

VI. YouTube career in the future:

6. Essential factors to become a famous YouTuber:
- Data based on the survey:

From the previous bar chart, we can see that young people appreciate the YouTubers with a
positive spirit of living and working. Besides, lifestyle & thinking and knowledge are also factors
that determine the impressive level of that Youtuber job in the hearts of young people.
The young also appreciate some factors that determine a youtuber be famous such as the number
of views & good response, positive values creating for the community or their wide popularity
& own value creating or meaningful content.
Data based on the interview of some Youtuber:

11
Blingbabi Youtube suggests that a famous YouTuber is the one who wins the love and support of
the subscribers as well as owns useful and quality video content while a famous youtuber to A
Flying Andrew Youtuber is someone who makes meaningful and educational videos, not
nonsensical videos. someone who makes meaningful and educational videos, not nonsensical
videos. For HK15: famous Youtubers own thousands or millions of subscribers, are followed by
many people and have a voice in the community. Each Youtubers has their own style in various
categories. They know what kind of contents they should be focusing on to attract more viewers
(e.g. studying abroad, food, traveling, etc.). For instance, Changmakeup is a Youtube channel
about fashion and cosmetics, and many of her videos contain a huge collection of lipsticks; Bà
Tân Vlog uploads videos about her cooking giant dishes; HeAlwaysSmiles, a channel whose
content is making vlogs, telling stories about life. Furthermore, famous Youtubers or content
creators can be offered many paid advertisements. For example, Michelle Phan built her own
cosmetic company with an offer from L’Oreal.
7. Future prospects:
The results of the survey describes that 50% of people joining the survey think that Youtuber can
develop in the long term in the future, while 30% think that it depends on the tastes and content
production of the channel owners. The rest said it was not possible.
About youtuber we interviewed
HK15 said that he wants to become a full time YouTuber in the future and he thinks that
YouTubers who just care about profit should not be encouraged. Youtuber BLINGBABI decides
to become a professional Youtuber; and she thinks that this job will be more competitive in the
future due to the large number of talented and enthusiastic young Youtubers. A Flying Andrew
TV is not going to be a professional Youtuber since he thinks that there will be lots of
competition as well as difficulties while working as Youtubers.

VI. Discussion:
In conclusion, we can see that the number of young YouTubers in Vietnam is increasing due to
many influencing factors. Those factors include: the number of Youtube users & channels; the
preferences of the young, the benefit of being Youtuber, the diversity of contents and the
inspiration of current Youtubers in Vietnam. Besides the quantity increase, the content and
quality of video are also growing. By surveying and directly interviewing some young
YouTubers, we realize that developing a YouTube channel could be a potential career in the

12
future. However, whether you become a famous or successful YouTube content creator or not
depends on the content of the channel as well as your thinking.
Our research has some limitations that our survey responses do not cover all places in Vietnam,
so the results could be a little not realistic. However, we focus on analyzing our results seriously
and carefully, and we believe that our results should be useful for people who are working as a
Youtube content creator or people who intentends to be a Youtuber.
