CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The quality and excellence of learning is of utmost importance in any educational system.

Schools must ensure that their students are not pressured by stress or depressed in a way that

they are capable of making a positive contribution to its own self.

According to https://www.who.int/ , it is not well known to poeple that Depression is a

common mental disorder that is much similar on being stressed. It is distinguished by continuous

unhappiness and a loss of interest or pleasure in formerly rewarding or pleasurable activities. It

can also interfere with sleep and appetite. Tiredness and lack of attention are frequent symptoms.

Stress is a primary cause of disability worldwide, contributing significantly to the global illness

burden. Stress's consequences can be long-lasting or recurring, and they can have a significant

impact on a person's capacity to function and live a fulfilling life. Stress caused by complex

interplay between social, psychological, and biological variables. Childhood hardship, loss, and

unemployment all contribute to and may hasten the onset of depression that is related to stress.
As Gerardo Sison, Pharm.D., states that Globally, it is estimated that most of the students

suffer from the disorder because more over 7% of individuals are diagnosed with depression,

although people aged 12 to 25 have the greatest prevalence. A severe and prolonged low mood,

intense sadness, or a sense of hopelessness are the most noticeable signs of major depression. A

major depressive episode (MDE) is a period of time characterized by significant depressive

symptoms. A major depressive episode is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of

Mental Disorders as two weeks or more of having a low mood or lack of interest or pleasure in

daily activities, as well as issues sleeping, eating, energy, attention, or self-worth.

"Sudden losses or changes might aggravate pre-existing symptoms of despair or anxiety,"

says Yesel Yoon, Ph.D., a New York-based psychologist. Depressive episodes can be

precipitated by a variety of factors, including the death of a loved one, a break-up, financial

hardship, a physical condition, and drug use disorder. "Depression impacts people by altering

their level of functioning in various aspects of their lives," Yoon explains. "Specifically, people's

sleep, appetite, focus, mood, energy level, physical health, and social life can all vary

substantially as a result of depressive symptoms." People suffering from depression frequently

have trouble getting out of bed, having little to no ambition or energy to accomplish the activities

they normally do, and feeling irritated or very unhappy. All of these different aspects surely

make life more difficult."


Statement of the Problem

The result of this study will provide the Grade 12 Students of Ilocos Norte College of

Arts and Trades to assist them in dealing with Depression. To achieve its purpose, this study will

explore the experiences and coping mechanism of student that are depressed.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to determine the coping mechanism of depression of Grade

12 students of Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades. The central research question is; What

are the coping mechanism of depression that they use or needed to cope up with their

depression? Further, how does the coping mechanism help the Grade 12 students of Ilocos Norte

College of Arts and Trades to cope up with their depression?
