ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to determine the impact of social media to the upcoming
election 2022. With the increasing numbers of people using social media to get news and
political information, whether social media helps users learn about politics has become an
important question. Intrigued by the potential of social media to politically educate people,
the researcher has begun to explore the impacts of social media on this year’s election. The
descriptive qualitative method was used in the study to determine the impact of social media
to the upcoming election 2022. The self-made essay-type questionnaire used in obtaining data
is composed of five (5) questions, all regarding this study. The researcher had come up with
fifteen (15) selected citizens from Polillo, Quezon that are in the age group between sixteen
(16) and thirty-six (36) to be the respondents of this study. The majority of the respondents
were female, eleven (11) out of fifteen (15), and four (4) were male. The researcher had
election 2022, as the majority of the respondents claim that using social media as a platform
for election campaigns is helpful and effective; however, most of the respondents also
claimed that using social media in election campaigns has a lot of disadvantages, like fake

social media and the way people use it to ruin a certain political candidate’s reputation or
image. All of the respondents also stated that the use of social media on election campaigns
has a significant impact on their views about a certain political candidate or a political party
according to the information perceived from social media. The use of social media in politics
has a significant impact on the voting behavior of people who are using social media in
political communication. This study also found that politically interested people get needed
information on social media about political activities and new policies by following a certain
political candidate on social media. The majority of the respondents also stated that “chaos”
is the first thing that comes into their mind whenever they see posts and discussions on social
media about the political candidates and their election campaign platforms because, whenever
they see supporters of the different political candidates, arguing and debating with each other
on social media, it totally bothers them. Another finding is that the use of social media in
politics has challenges amongst the people: First, the information that people see on social
media might not be true and not verified, and with that, it can negatively affect the people’s
perception of each other and also the political candidates. Second, more fights and debates
are happening on social media because of the people’s differences in their political views.
And lastly, the popularity impact that can be gained on social media, because people
nowadays are bandwagon. Social media plays an increasingly important role in the field of
voter information. Political candidates need to reach voters where they are and young voters
are particularly active on social networks. Therefore, social media is an effective tool in voter
education designed to ensure voters are well informed and can effectively exercise their
voting rights, however, using social media can also have a lot of disadvantages or challenges
that can really affect the voters, political candidates, and youth.
