Solving problems using Polya’s 4-step model
Mr. Jones has a total of 25 chickens
and cows on his farm. How many of
each does he have if all together there
are 76 feet?
1st Problem
Progress:
STEP1: UNDERSTAND THE Plan
The problem stated that there are 25 chickens and
cows. If all are put together, there are 76 feet in total.
So, chickens have 2 feet and cows have 4 feet. We are
asked to determine how many cows and chickens are
on Mr. Jones' farm.
STEP2: DEVISE A PLAN
We can use and translate this problem into an
equation to determine the number of chickens
and cows in the farm.
STEP3: carry out THE Plan
Let's assume that all the chickens have 2 legs and
the cows have 4 legs. Also, let the number of cows
be 'x' and the number of chickens be ‘y.’
Given
𝑥 + 𝑦 = 25 4𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 76
𝑦 = 25 − 𝑥 4𝑥 + 2(25 − 𝑥) = 76
𝑦 = 25 − 13 4𝑥 + 50 − 2𝑥 = 76
𝑦 = 12 4𝑥 − 2𝑥 = 76 − 50
2𝑥 = 26
𝑥 = 13
Therefore, there are 13 cows and 12 chickens.
STEP4: look back
Check: 12 (chickens) + 13 (cows) = 25 chickens and cows
12 chickens have 24 feet in total
13 cows have 52 feet in total
So, 24 + 52 = 76 feet.
The admission fee at a small fair is P75
for children and P200 for adults. On a
certain day, 2200 people enter the fair,
and P252,500 is collected. How many
children and how many adults
attended?
2nd Problem
Progress:
STEP1: UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM
The event has an entrance fee for 75p for children and
200p for adults. The number of attendees are 2200
people and earned P252,500. How many are the children
and the adult?
STEP2: DEVISE A PLAN
Create two equations and use substitution.
STEP3: carry out THE Plan
Let the number of children be 'x' and the number
of adults be 'y'
Given
𝑥 + 𝑦 = 2200 75𝑥 + 200𝑦 = 252,500
