III. Learning Activities:

Teacher’s activity Students activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Drill:

Good morning students!

Good morning sir
May I request everyone to
please stand, Let us have a game
first called “Sound me”. I will say
an animal’s name and you will
perform its Sound.
Am I understood class?
Yes, Maam
Cat
Meow Meow
Dog
Arf! Arf!
Bird
Twit! Twit!
Frog
Kokak Kokak
Snake
Ssss Ssss
You can now take your seats

2. Review

Yesterday we end up our

lesson about matter.

You already know that,

the smallest part of matter
is atom, Right?
Yes maam!
So now what is atom? Mark
Atom is the basic unit of a
chemical element.

Very Good Idea, thank you

Mark.

Who among you here can

recall what is the 3 main
parts of an atom.
The three main parts of an
atom are the proton, neutron
and electron.
That’s great! Amazing,
I guess you have learned
much from our previous
lesson.
3. Motivation

Now, class I have here some

pictures of an elements atomic
structure.

Kevin, can you please

determine how many
electrons are their?

Oxygen atomic structure

There are 8 electrons maam

Very good Kevin, how about
this one Rufa? How many
protons are their?

Nitrogen atomic structure

There are 7 protons maam

Okay very good, it looks like

that you are ready for the lesson.

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation of the lesson

Now based on the activity,

what do you think is our lesson
for today?
Determine the number of
protons, neutrons and
electrons in a particular atom
Okay correct! Well said, our
lesson this morning will tackle
about determining the number
of protons, neutrons and electrons

a. Setting of standards

Now class, I know that all of you

are really good, therefore there’s
nothing for me to worry because
i believe you will possess good
attitudes as a student.

When one is discussing in front,

you need to listen attentively,
participate and be behave the
whole time, and one more rule,
chatting and making nonsense
thing with your classmates that
is not relevant in the lesson is
prohibited.

Am I understood class?
Yes maam!

Very Good!
And our lesson objectives:

a. determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons of an element by

using periodic table;
b. share the significance of knowing the number of protons, neutrons and
electrons in an atom through calculation; and
c. solve the number of protons, neutrons and electrons of an element.

2. Discussion/Analysis

Let’s have first an activity,

this activity is called
“count me” I will divide the
class into 2 groups, I have
here pictures of an elements
and all you have to do is to
determine how many protons,
neutrons and electrons are their.
Each group will choose one
as representative to explain
their output, Understood?
Yes Maam!
I will give you 4 minutes to
answer and discuss with your
group mates.
(Students are doing the
activity)
Now if you are done, please
present your output.
Group 1: Carbon
Group 2: Boron

Great Job! Let’s give

everyone a Darna clap!
(Students performing)
Now, how can we determine
the number of protons,
neutrons and electrons of
an element?  Protons are
particles in the nucleus of an
atom that have a positive
charge equal to +1. Electrons
are particles that have a
negative charge equal to -1.
Therefore, an element in a
neutral state will have the
same number of protons
and electrons. For example,
boron (B) has an atomic
number of 5, therefore it has
5 protons and 5 electrons.
To find the number of neutrons,
you will first need to find the
atomic mass. An element’s
atomic mass (also known as the
atomic weight) is the weighted
average mass of atoms of an
element. The atomic mass can
be found underneath the symbol
of the element.

Now, Aldrin can you please solve

the number of Lithium’s neutron?

4, maam

Very good, how did you calculate it?

By looking to Lithium’s
atomic mass and atomic
number maam.

Excellent! Thank you Aldrin

3. Generalization

Again how can we determine

the number of protons?
By looking for its positively
charge atom.
How about electrons, how can
we determine it?
We just need to look for the
negatively charge atoms
maam.

a. Valuing

To test if you understand our

discussion, what is the significance
of knowing the number of protons,
neutrons and electrons in an
element?

The number of protons in an

atom is similar to the number
of electrons to balance the
charge and make an atom a
neutral entity. So, if we have
the number of protons then
the number of electrons can
be easily found out and the
electronic configuration as
well. Once the electronic
configuration of an atom is
drawn then it is easy to
analyze the chemical
properties and behaviour of
that atom.
C. Application

Now, let’s have another

activity. This is entitled
“we’re all in this together”,
with the same group all
you have to do is to solve
the number of protons,
neutrons and electrons.

Helium

Neon
I will give you 8 minutes
to finish answering, understood?
Yes Sir!

IV. Evaluation
