Lateral buckling of columns

Most columns have a strength less than the cross‐section strength Ns because they buckle

laterally.

The tendency to buckle increases as the length of the column increases, and so its load
carrying capacity decreases.

For a compression member we define the SLENDERNESS RATIO Le/r

Le = effective length

= radius of gyration
Lateral buckling of columns
Typically:

NS
Column strength Nc

Strength reduces due

to lateral buckling

Le
 10 100 200 300 r
Lateral buckling of real columns

The compressive strength is: NC  CNS

and so for design N *
  N C   0 .9

Having determined Ns, we must therefore calculate the
SLENDERNESS REDUCTION FACTOR ac
