REFLECTION PAPER NO. 3

MOVIE ANALYSIS: EDUCATING PETER

This documentary, in my opinion, vividly illustrated the possibility of an inclusion class for me. I typically see
children with less severe learning disabilities attending regular courses when I think about inclusion classes, not
children with down syndrome and other more severe disabilities like Peter. But after watching this video, I understood
how crucial Peter's teacher and fellow classmates were to his academic achievement.
The teacher in the classroom must put in more time and effort to make sure that the student with a learning
disability is getting the learning opportunities that are best for him or her. Despite her early worries regarding Peter's
frequent tantrums and physical abuse of other students, it is made apparent in the movie that Peter's teacher
believes all children can learn. She is inspired to have high standards for Peter's academic achievement by this
conviction. She pushes him and makes him do many of the same assignments that her other students do.
Peter's classmates' behavior throughout this video made me very happy. Despite being only third graders,
and even with Peter lashing out, cried on, and yelled at many of the students, none of them ever responded in kind or
felt any ill will against Peter. All of them wanted Peter to succeed, so they were prepared to help him throughout the
day. The opportunity the students had to talk about Peter's intellectual disabilities with their teacher and an EC
teacher as a class at the early part of the year, in addition to how it affected him and what they were able to assist
Peter, including during his outbursts, was, in my opinion, one of the key elements that allowed a community like this
to form. I believe that this interaction helped Peter's classmates see him for who he truly was a fellow student who
just encountered some particular difficulties that made learning a little bit more difficult for him.
Because of the teacher's faith in him and the support of his classmates and parents, I believe that Peter's
third-grade experience in a conventional classroom was beneficial to him, his teacher, and his classmates. Peter's
gains in behavior and academic performance as well as the small community that grew in the classroom were truly
outstanding.
There are several people in my daily life that have a range of learning and communication obstacles, even if
I haven't had the opportunity to teach someone as remarkable as Peter. I am now more convinced than ever that
every student can learn, and that developing a sense of importance and belonging for every student in the class can
have a big impact on their ability to further their education.
In conclusion, the role of the teacher inside the classroom setting wherein Peter and his peers grew up, isn't
only to distribute knowledge to the students, but also to be the guiding light whomst the children could follow and be
their students role models. That being said, as an aspiring educator, I Jhanamie Galoso, would not only serve as a
module made out of flesh to my students, but also their pens, paper and their lamp that would guide them through the
darkness, irregardless of their standing in life.
