PROJECT #1: BLOOD DONATION DRIVE REVIEW

PROJECT BRIEF

This project aims to encourage and facilitate healthy students from the Papua New Guinea
University of Technology to donate blood at the Angau Memorial Hospital – the major hospital in the
Momase Region. The blood donation will be carried out from the 29th – 31st August 2022.

ANGAU MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

ANGAU Memorial Hospital is a major hospital in Lae, Papua New Guinea. Named after an Australian
Army unit that was responsible for the civil administration of the Territory of Papua and the
Mandated Territory of New Guinea, the hospital provides in-patient and specialist medical services
to people in the Sepik, Madang and Morobe provinces.

WHY DONATE BLOOD

Safe blood saves lives and improves health. Blood is vital to life and for many people blood donors
are their lifeline. Currently only 1 in 30 people give blood, but 1 in 3 people will need blood in their
lifetime.

There is a constant need for regular blood supply because blood can be stored for only a limited
time before use. Regular blood donations by a sufficient number of healthy people is needed to
ensure that safe blood will be available whenever and wherever it is needed.

Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person it’s the gift of life. A decision
to donate your blood can save a life, or even several if your blood is separated into its components –
red cells, platelets and plasma, which can be used individually for patients with specific conditions.

REVIEW

Ever since Covid-19 hit, the nation has been scarred and citizens frightened for their safety. Hence
the number of donors walking into the hospital and numbers of donors have significantly dropped.
This saw health workers – in addition to staying up late hours, risking their lives in the frontline, and
saving lives, donate their blood countless times to save a life. This is such a sad and heart breaking
revelation all citizens must be aware of. This is what has led to the initiating of this project.

The blood donation drive – the first of its kind in UNITECH, after almost a decade, was a success
thanks to the KTF Archer Leaders 2021-2022 and the executives of the SCLSS and SGTSS Student
Union Alumni in collaboration with the Angau Memorial Hospital team. Without the help of the
following people, this great project would not have been possible:

Not only those, but appreciation is also extended to all the donors and everyone who worked
together to make everything possible: the bus drivers, the printing team and those who registered.

This project saw the institution donate 30 blood bags to the Angau Memorial Hospital. One bag of
blood can save up to three people. That means that the team has organised and collected blood to
save the lives of up to 90 Papua New Guinean Live!

The credit goes back to everyone who put in a hand and gave their time, despite their own busy
schedules. I can never thank you all enough. I hope throughout this project you realize it is bigger
than us. It is firstly creating an awareness of the importance of donating blood and saving lives.
Secondly it is a testament that team work makes the dream work. The one thing that delights my
soul is the fact that someone’s life will be saved. Anyone – someone’s father, brother, son, husband,
uncle, mother, wife, daughter or even someone close to you. We need to break the mindset of being
adamant about the little issues in our community and see how we can contribute in helping in our

own little ways. This I believe, is what will shape more open minded and caring leaders for our
nation in the future.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

The two associations will work to ensure that this blood donation initiative is continued on into the
future when the current team graduates and leaves. The team will work to ensure that, especially
post-Covid, Angau Memorial Hospital will have the access to vital source blood donations from the
PNG University of Technology at least once or twice a year.
