Non-Mendelian Patterns
of Inheritance
Describethe location of
genes in chromosomes
Explain
the different
patterns of Non-
Mendelian inheritance
Genetics is the study of
heredity.
Heredity is a biological process
whereby a parent passes certain
genes onto their children or
offspring.
Every child inherits genes
from both of their biological
parents and these genes, in turn,
express specific traits.
Punnett Square – the method by
which we can determine the
possible genotypes and
phenotypes when two parents
are crossed.
Phenotype – refers to the
physical expression of the
character (red, white and pink
for the color of the flower).
Genotype – describe the
genes of the individual
(FR, FW, FRFW).
Homozygous – gene pairs are
made up of identical gene.
Heterozygous – gene pairs
that are made up of dissimilar
genes.

Color of seed Yellow x Green Yellow
Flower color Purple x White Purple
Plant height Tall x Dwarf Tall
Dominant or Recessive?
Incomplete Dominance
- occurs when the
phenotype of the offspring is
somewhere in between the
phenotypes of both parents
- a completely dominant
allele does not occur.
Allele-one of a number of
different forms of a gene
example: G and g for seed

Codominance
-occurs when both
alleles are expressed
equally in the phenotype
of the heterozygote
