GEOMETRIC MEANS

Objectives:
 Define geometric mean. • Determine the geometric mean given the extremes.
ENGAGE
ACTIVITY 1: GEOMETRIC OR NOT!
For each sequence, determine whether it appears to be geometric. If it does, find the common ratio.
□ Geometric
1. 10, 30, 90, 270, … Common ratio: r = ______

□ Not geometric
□ Geometric
2. 4, 6, 8, 10, … Common ratio: r = ______

□ Not geometric
□ Geometric
3. 250, -50, 10, -2, … Common ratio: r = ______

□ Not geometric

ACTIVITY 2: WHAT’S THE NEXT TERM?
Find the specified term of the following geometric sequence.
__________ 1. 2, 6, 18, … 6th term _________ 3. 2, ____, 18
_________ 2. 3, 6, 12, ... 7th term _________ 4. -2, ____, ____, ____, -162
Questions:
a. Were you able to answer items 3 and 4? b. How did you come up with your answers?
EXPLAIN
The first and last terms of a geometric sequence are called the extremes, and the terms between are called means. In the
geometric sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, the number 2, 4, 8, are the geometric means between 1 and 16. The formula to solve for a
geometric mean between two terms is ± √ ab which is also called the mean proportionality of a and b.
Illustrative Examples:
1. Insert one geometric mean between 2 and 18.
2. Insert one geometric mean between 3 and 45.
3. Insert 3 geometric means between -2 and – 162.
