GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: What does the Lord require of you?
All: Do justice,
One: Love kindness,
All: And walk humbly with God.
All: Let us worship God by doing justice, loving kindness and walking humbly with
the Lord.

*Hymn
Now Thank We All Our God
Now thank we all our God
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things hath done,
in whom this world rejoices;
who, from our mothers' arms,
hath blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.
O may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessed peace to cheer us;

2
and keep us in God's grace,
and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all ills
in this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God,
who reigns in highest heaven,
to Father and to Son
and Spirit now be given:
the one eternal God,
whom heaven and earth adore,
the God who was, and is,
and shall be evermore.
Call to Confession
Prayer of Confession
God, we have not spoken truth from the heart with love. We sometimes fail to listen to our
neighbors’ needs, because we are so focused on ourselves. We do not hold ourselves or
our officials accountable for treating all people justly, making sure they are given
opportunities to live securely and in comfort. Forgive us by your mercy, that we might
stand in the goodness of Christ and walk in the light of his love. Amen.

Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Hear the good news!
All: Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose
for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us.
One: Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
All: The old life has gone; a new life has begun.
One: Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

Hymn
O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee
O Master, let me walk with thee
in lowly paths of service free;
tell me thy secret; help me bear
the strain of toil, the fret of care.
3
Help me the slow of heart to move
by some clear, winning word of love;
teach me the wayward feet to stay,
and guide them in the homeward way.
Teach me thy patience, still with thee
in closer, dearer company,
in work that keeps faith sweet and strong,
in trust that triumphs over wrong.
In hope that sends a shining ray
far down the future's broadening way;
in peace that only thou canst give,
with thee, O Master, let me live.
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Micah 6:1-8
Hear what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear
your voice. 2 Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the LORD, and you enduring
foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend
with Israel. 3 ‘O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer
me! 4 For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of
slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 5 O my people, remember now what
King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened
from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the LORD.’ 6 ‘With what shall I
come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with
burnt-offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit
of my body for the sin of my soul?’ 8 He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does
the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your
God?

Reading from the Gospel

Matthew 5:1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples
came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 ‘Blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be
comforted. 5 ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 ‘Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they
will receive mercy. 8 ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 ‘Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 ‘Blessed are those who are
persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 ‘Blessed are you
when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my
account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they
persecuted the prophets who were before you.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (Mt 5:1–12). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ
his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
AMEN.

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Make Me A Channel of Your Peace
Make me a channel of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there's doubt, true faith in you.
Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, only light,
and where there's sadness, ever joy.
Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.
Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we're born to eternal life.

Benediction
