Part 1: Getting Started
1. Logging on

If prompted to log on at the Teacher PC …

z N.B. THIS IS SPECIFIC TO DULWICH COLLEGE


z Press Control, Alt, Delete simultaneously to bring up the Login
prompt
z In the Lab you must log on using your own username and
password, as you would at any other PC

2. Setting up a Group

First let your students log on

They appear as little icons


in the classroom map

Now click on the Group icon in the
top left of the teacher screen

Then click OK in the small pop
up box that appears

Next click the Select button on
the teacher screen …

… and click on the desks you
want to include in the group

The desks are circled in colour


as you click on them.

Finally, click the OK button on
the teacher screen

You have now selected a
group!

Note that the group has appeared


in the left hand column …

… and the desks included


in the group have all
become a solid colour

You can create as many groups as
you wish, by repeating the
process

Each group appears as a separately coloured


button, matching the colours in the desk plan

Summary of creating groups
z Click the Group icon
z Click OK in the pop up box
z Click Select
z Click on the desired desks

z Repeat the above to set up another group

3. Saving an Attendance Record

First: click on the Setup heading in the Task
pane, to bring up the relevant icons

Then click on the icon labelled Save

A dialogue box opens, asking you
to save the attendance record:

Simply select the folder you wish


to save in, and give the attendance
record a name, as you would when
saving any other file. The
recommended folder is Artec/Registers,
and the recommended filename
your initials plus date. Then click Save.

Finally click OK. An
attendance record has been
saved!

To view the attendance record, simply open it
from the folder where it was saved

4. Managing the Classroom

There are 3 ways to interact
with the students:

In groups

As an entire classroom

And individually, one on one

To interact with a specific
group of students …

… right click on the Group button

A pop up Menu appears:

Simply highlight the action you wish


to carry out, and click on it

Similarly, to interact with an
individual student …

… right click on the relevant desk

Again, simply highlight the


desired action and click

Finally, to interact with all students in the
classroom, regardless of groups …

... click the relevant heading,


then icon, in the Task Pane.
The action is then carried out
on the whole classroom

Important philosophical point
z If you are assigning the same work to all
students, there really is no reason to use
groups. Simply work at an individual and
classroom level
z Groups are most useful in mixed ability
classes, where different levels of work are
being assigned to different sets of pupils

z Right click on a desk: affects that desk
z Right click on a Group button: affects that group

Part 2: Interaction
1. Talking to Students

To talk to a particular
student, right click on their
desk and select Intercom

Here is the
option Intercom

To stop talking, simply


deselect Intercom from
the same desk’s menu

To talk to a group, right
click on the group
button and select Call

To talk to all students ...

z In the task pane select the heading


Communicate

z Then click on the icon Call All Call All, under
the heading

To stop talking:

z Right click on the icon Call All


z Then click Stop Call All

In each case the desk icons change to
show when a student can hear you

In this example, only the blue


desks can hear the teacher.
Call Group has been selected
for the blue group of desks

2. Sending Students a Text Message

To send a message to one
student, right click on the
desk and select Send Text
Message

Here is the

appear. Just type your
message and click OK.

group button and select
Send Text Message

z In the task pane select the


heading Communicate
z Then click on Text to All Here is the icon

3. Sending the Teacher a Text Message

To send the teacher a message, the student
can click on their Call Teacher button

Here is the Call Teacher button.

A dialogue box opens. They can then type
their message, and click OK to send it

On the teacher screen an alarm bell appears
indicating the desk from which a message has
been received

Hovering over the alarm bell


with the cursor allows the
message to be read.

To answer the message click the Light Bulb
icon in the top left of your screen. Please
note: you will answer by microphone not text!

If you have more than one message, use the drop
down menu to choose whom to respond to first,
then click on the Light Bulb

To delete any messages you have received,
simply click on the Trash icon, also in the top
left of your screen

4. Viewing Student Screens

To view an individual student’s screen
simply click once on their desk

z The student’s screen


will open as a window
on your desktop
z The student’s desk icon
is given a grey surround
to indicate that it is
being viewed
z To stop viewing simply
click on the desk again

To view a group of screens,
right click on the group
button and select Mosaic
View

This opens a window in which all the
screens in the group can be seen

The desk icons are given


a “mosaic” background
to indicate they are
being viewed

To stop viewing the
screens simply right
click on the group menu
and deselect Mosaic
View

z In the task pane select the heading

z Then click on Mosaic All

5. Taking over a Student Mouse
and Keyboard

To take over a student’s
mouse and keyboard:

First: click on the desk


to bring up a view of

To lock a student’s mouse
and keyboard:

First: click on the desk

For obvious reasons it is only possible
to take over the mouse and keyboard of
one desk at a time

z But it is possible to
lock multiple

To return control of keyboard
and mouse to the pupil:

desk or group button
and deselect Take over
(or Lock)

6. Displaying the Teacher Screen on the
Student Screens

To show your screen to
one student, right click on
their desk and select Show
screen

screen, simply deselect

on the group button and

7. Displaying a Student Screen on Other
Student Screens

z Right click on the desk of
the student whose screen
you want to show to others
z Hover the cursor over the
option Show Student
Screen
z Then choose whether to
show the screen To
Student, To Group, or To All
z Then, if prompted, choose
to which particular student,
to which particular group

8. Sending Files (Audio/Video/Text/Web)

To send a file it must of course
already be saved on the computer!

z In the case of web


pages this means the
page must be saved as a
favourite before sending

z This is easily done in


Internet Explorer, by
clicking Add to Favorites
on the page you want to
send

To send a file to an individual …

… right click on the


appropriate desk
and select Start
Application

9. Sending and Collecting Written Work

Sending out a written assignment is like
sending out any other text file with this
important difference:
you must use a session

So …

To send the assignment to an
individual …

… right click on the


appropriate desk
and select Start

session name

the text field, and click OK

To collect the completed assignments at
the end of the class …

z In the Task Pane select the


heading File transfer
z Then click on Collect Files

session name you typed in earlier, and

Send a text file, using a session name:
z Desk’s menu/Group menu/Task Pane, select Start Application,
Application with input file, Browse, choose file, click OK, enter
session name, click OK
Then collect files from that session:
z Desk’s menu/Group menu/Task Pane, select Collect Files,
choose session, click OK. Files are saved to the desktop folder

10. Playing a Tape/Video/DVD

First you must set up a group

Remember:
z Click the Group icon

z Click OK in the pop up box

z Click Select

z Click on the desired desks

z Click OK

Then: click on one of the icons at the top of
the screen (DVD, VCR, or Tape) and drag it to
the group button on the left
