INTRODUCTION

When a solar storm takes place, it poses a threat to our technology rather than our health.

Technology is always involved in our communication methods and in making our daily lives

more convenient. Therefore, as enlightened beings, we must recognize the risks of solar storms

and work collaboratively on how to effectively manage their dangers to our developments. Solar

storms are made up of three major elements: solar flares, solar proton events, and coronal mass

ejections. Coronal mass ejections can interact with the Earth's magnetic field, resulting in a

geomagnetic storm. (Marusek, 2007) Solar storms, specifically solar flares, pose numerous risks,

the most serious of which is a major power outage. When a solar storm hits, ATMs become

inoperable, your phone becomes pretty much useless, aircraft loses navigation due to radar

interference, and the list goes on. As responsible citizens, we must regularly monitor the news

for possible warnings and be mentally prepared and knowledgeable about the do's and don'ts,

which we will discuss in the following sections of our paper. The best way to be ready for any

disaster to come is to BE INFORMED.

A. Objectives

The aims of this project “Solar Storm Disaster Management: Preparing for the Unexpected” are
as follows:
1. To disseminate information about solar storms.

2. To caution individuals of the dangers of solar storms and their implications.

3. To encourage mitigation of risks of solar storms through early preparations.

B. Planning/Preparation

The purpose of the paper is to develop a proper procedure needed to prepare the right

course of action before or during a solar storm occurs. This type of disaster could be a short-term

or long-term problem, hence why learning various forms of survival techniques are necessary if

channels of communication do not work.

C. Emergency Do’s and Don’ts

Solar storms are a type of space weather that can disrupt power grids, communications,

and navigation systems. They occur when the sun emits a burst of high-energy particles, known

as a solar flare. Solar storms can also cause auroras or northern and southern lights. While solar

storms are not typically harmful to people, they can pose a risk to astronauts and people who

work in high-altitude aircraft. Solar storms can also disrupt power grids and communications

systems.

Here are the things you can do when solar storms happened:

• Make sure you have enough non-perishable food on hand (ex. canned foods, ready to eat

foods, or bread)

• Each individual should have enough water to last three days. So, it's a good idea to stock

up on water. Water, as we all know, is the most crucial of all.

• Having adequate cash on hand might be incredibly useful during this sort of situation.

• Grab extra batteries for lights and radios.

• Protect yourself and be aware of the risk of radiation exposure

• Have a backup plan in case of power outages

• If you are planning to view the aurora, be aware that solar storms can cause the aurora to

be more intense and widespread

• Before you lose contact, phone relatives and friends and inform them of your location

and intentions in the event of a significant power loss.

DONT’S

• Don't ignore warnings and alerts from official sources. A solar storm can be a serious

event, and it's important to stay informed and take appropriate action.

• Don't rely solely on electronic devices for communication or navigation. Solar storms

can cause disruptions to electronic systems, so it's important to have backup methods of

communication and navigation in place.

• Don't forget to protect your electronics. Unplugging them during a severe solar storm

can help protect them from power surges.

• Don't ignore the impact on your health. Prolonged exposure to solar radiation can have

negative effects on your health, so it's important to take steps to protect yourself.

• Don't overlook other possible consequences of a solar storm, such as disruptions to

power grids, satellite communications, and GPS systems. These can have far-reaching

effects on society and can cause significant damage.

• Don't ignore the importance of planning and preparation. A solar storm can happen

at any time, so it's important to have a plan in place and to take steps to prepare for the

event in advance.

• Don't ignore the importance of learning about the event, understanding the risks,

and taking appropriate steps to protect yourself, your family and your property. It's

important to be aware of the potential risks and to take steps to minimize them.

D. Prevention of the Situation

Even though Solar Storms are unpredictable, people should still be aware of how to avoid

a situation like this. Solar storms are not a disaster that a country can recover from in a matter of

days, weeks, or even months, hence why it's essential to inform the public about how the

government and researchers are preparing for them. Solar storms can disrupt satellite

communications, cause satellite disorientation, and cause significant damage to the electronic

devices on Earth's spacecraft. Not only do solar storms generate a lot of waves outside the Earth,

it also causes extreme radiation and can deplete the ozone layer among other things. To prevent

this, everyone should be informed about solar storms; individuals must know what to do and

what not to do when a solar storm occurs. People should also refrain from engaging in activities

or doing things that can cause the earth's ozone layer to thin and crack, because it is one of the

layers that provides protection from harmful ultraviolet rays. Researchers continue to work to

improve the prediction or forecasting of the possibility of solar storms so that everyone can be

adequately prepared in advance.
