Nowadays , it is a fact that, many people use different products for various purposes and some

sources indicate that they tend to only use them for a short period of time and then "throw them
away". This essay will first analyze some of the main causes and then point out some problems of
this trend.
Throwing away an item after a short time of using can be explained by a combination of reasons.
First and foremost , one of the causes is with the world’s economic growth, families started to
have more income in their hands and more spending power , therefore, it did not cost much to
replace an item with a new one . For instance, instead of buying one high quality, long-lasting
smartphone consumers are constantly buying low-priced ones and then throwing them away.
Another compelling reason is that today's items are mass-produced in large quantities to meet the
needs of consumers so they won't feel a shortage. For example, in the old days, the family of
items became scarce, they would appreciate and use it for a long time instead of using it as
wastefully as today.
There are many serious problems that can be inferred from the above causes. A fairly predictable
problem is that when people use too many items in a short time, it leads to excess inventory and
pollutes the environment. To illustrate, plastic bags are the item of choice for consumers around
the world because of its convenience but it takes thousands of years for plastic bags to
decompose so it is very harmful to the environment. Moreover , due to unreasonable spending
habits, they will soon run out of money. Therefore , instead of buying cheap things, they should
buy expensive items that can be used for a long time.
In conclusion , economic development and mass production are the main reasons for consumer
waste which also lead to environmental problems or run out of money.
