SER and ESTAR

At the end of this lesson, the learners are expected to:


Explain what a conjugation is;
Conjugate ser and estar;
Discuss the use of ser and estar in a sentence; and
Translate simple sentences with ser and estar.

Ser and estar are irregular verbs that have the same meaning but they differ in terms of their
functions. It is important to know the conjugations and uses of these verbs in order for the students to
construct simple sentences.
In Spanish, the conjugation determines the different forms of the verbs as to person (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and
number (singular and plural).

A. Conjugation of SER – to be

USE OF SER USE OF ESTAR

Yo soy de Manila. I am from Manila. Nosotros estamos en el cuarto. We

Yo soy Señor Santiago. I am Mr. Santiago. My tools are in the garden.

Ellos son maestros. They are teachers. Estoy cansado porque no dormí ayer.
Esta es Manila. This is Manila. I am tired because I did not sleep yesterday.

. 1. Ser and estar are the same except for the conjugation and their use in a sentence as shown in the
tables above.

2.The subjects must agree with ser and estar in terms of person and number (singular and
plural).

Señor Salazar es un doctor. Subject:Señor Salazar Verb: es


Mr. Salazar is a doctor. Person 3rd person 3rd person
Number singular singular

3.The use of the subject pronouns can be omitted since subject pronouns are used for emphasis
only.

Tu eres una niña alta. Or You are a tall girl.


Eres una niña alta. You are a tall girl.

4. How do we tell TIME in Spanish?

¿Que hora es? What time is it?

Es la… It is…
Son las… It is…

In Spanish, there are two ways on how we can answer the question ¿Que hora es?. First, we
can answer by saying Es la + time if the time is 12:31-1:30. The next one is by saying Son
las + time if he time is from 1:31 – 12:30.
Es la una menos diez. It is 12:50.
Son las dos menos veinte. It is 1:40.

Es la una veinte. It is 1:20.


Son las tres quince/quarto. It is 3:15.

If the minutes is already in 30, we do not say in Spanish treinta but media.

Son las siete y media. It is 7:30.

We say por la mañana or de la mañana to refer to am. We say por la tarde or de la
tarde to refer to pm(afternoon/evening) and por la noche or de la noche to refer to
pm(night).

Son las nueve menos cinco por la mañana. It is 8:55 am.


Es la una veintidos de la tarde. It is 1:22 pm.

If the question is ¿A que hora seras en la escuela? (At what time will you be at the
school?), the answer must be Yo sere en la escuela a las siete quince por la
mañana. (I will be at the school at 7:15 am). Note the difference in translation of telling
time particularly the use of a las to introduce time. However, a la will be used to introduce
time if the time is from 12:31 – 1:30. For example, Yo sere en la escuela a la una diez
por la tarde.(I will be at the school at 1:10 pm.).
