SPEAKING 3 - Unit 11 - On The Move (Updated 2022)
Unit 11
ON THE MOVE
→ I’ve always wanted to visit South Africa. I’d love to go on a safari and see all the wild animals.
It’s a dream of mine to camp out on the savannah, watching the sunset and drinking a nice glass
of wine surrounded by the wildlife. I want to trek up to Table Mountain as well. I’ve seen pictures
of people at the peak of the mountain and they look absolutely incredible.
→ For us, the perfect holiday would be a relaxing beach holiday. Even though the summer tends
to be the busiest tourist season, we would most probably go to a beach resort to enjoy the beautiful
summer weather. We much prefer hot weather, because my parents live in a city in the north part
of Vietnam where the weather is much colder than most regions in the country.
8. If you can visit another country, where will you go? Why?
→ I would like to visit Japan and also South Korea. These are my most favourite and desired
destinations because of their scenic beauty and also the people who are very generous and sweet.

→ I had first thought about this when I was in middle school. I remember seeing Egyptian
pyramids in one of our books about nature and falling in love with them. Since then, I have always
wanted to go to Egypt and to visit these ancient structures.
→ If I have the chance to visit one famous place, it will be Paris, a must-see place to me. I would
love to visit the Eiffel Tower, to tuck into French delicacies in prestigious restaurants. In addition,
it’d be great for me to visit the Louver Museum and discover history as well as La Sorbonne
University – the oldest educational institution in modern France.
9. Are there many tourists visiting your country?
→ Yes … we have a lot of holiday resorts along the coast that are popular with tourists … most
people come on package holidays and stay in one of the many hotels and self-catering apartments.
→ Yes, a good number of foreign visitors come into my country, Vietnam. I have noticed that the
middle-aged people are more in number than other age groups. They come from almost every part
of the world including Asia, Europe, and America.
→ Absolutely… I live in Vietnam and we have many different tourist attractions in many cities,
especially Ha Noi capital and Ho Chi Minh City… In addition, my country has old-time religious
traditions. That's why we have a lot of ancient pagodas and churches that are interesting for both
tourists and local citizens.
10. What kind of places have you visited in your life?
→ Sadly, I didn’t get to see many destinations inside and outside of my native country. I have
traveled a bit in the South of Vietnam and went to see parts of Thailand and Cambodia.
→ I am a working person. Therefore, I prefer to visit the places which elevate my mood and
energize me. I have been to some of the most beautiful beaches and lakes in my country, such as
Vung Tau beach, Phan Thiet beach, Ba Be lake, Hoan Kiem lake. These places bring me closer to
nature and refresh me.
→ I usually prefer to visit places which have historical significance. I have been to several places
such as on Dao Prison, the tomb of Khai Dinh, Cu Chi Tunnels, and many more place, which retain
a glorious ancient history and are important in enhancing the knowledge about our culture.
You should make useful notes to help you speak fluently for 2 minutes. Don’t waste time writing too
much, and never attempt to write full sentences! You will simply run out of time. You only have 1
minute to make notes.
That means you should just write ideas and key vocabulary.

Model answer 1:
In the summer of 2016, I visited Indonesia.
To begin with, I was travelling with my friend, but then I took a boat trip alone. The boat sailed from
the island of Lombok to a place called Komodo National Park, which is famous for being the home of
the Komodo dragon – an amazing species of lizard. We sailed for four days and four nights on rough
seas, but it was a beautiful trip. In the day time you could just relax and watch the islands go by, and
at night you could see an incredible number of stars. Sometimes the boat would stop and we could go
swimming or snorkeling. I swam with manta rays, dolphins, giant moray eels, and countless other fish.
Sometimes you could go trekking on remote islands and climb to the very top to see the astounding
views.
It was a memorable experience for me because of the exotic wildlife and stunning views, as well as
the feeling of being on the sea at night, under all those stars.
Model answer 2:
Example notes: - Nha Trang
- a few months ago
- flight = 1 hour >< train = 15 hours
- cruise, sightseeing, cookery course
- colourful lifestyle, spectacular scenery
I would like to talk about a holiday I went on in the south of Vietnam just a few months ago.
I went with my parents to a town called Nha Trang, which is a lovely coastal town, and we decided to
go there so that they could experience a different part of the country and see life by the beach.
We flew there from Ha Noi, which is the capital of Vietnam. The flight took about 1 hour and on the
whole it went smoothly. We managed to be one of the first on board and one of the first off when we
landed. It was certainly quicker and easier than going by train, which can take over 15 hours.
There was so much to do there that we only had a chance to do just a few things on our three-day trip.
We took a cruise around the islands and also did some sightseeing inland as well. Taking part in a
cookery course was great fun, where we bought fresh ingredients at the local market and learned how
to use a wok to fry fresh fish and other seafood like crab and lobster.
We definitely enjoyed our trip and would go there again if we could. Seeing the colourful lifestyle of
the locals and having a chance to see spectacular scenery was something we will never forget. For my
parents it was a holiday of a life time and they’re still talking about it. If I could live there, I would.

→ Travelling broadens our mind, enhances our knowledge and gives us unique first-hand
experiences if it is done in a right way. To gain ideology of different cultures and to overcome the
superstitions, travelling has no alternative. Every single day of travelling teaches us a different
lesson, and we experience new things while we travel. So I quite agree that travelling to different
places definitely broadens the mind.
→ I do, yes. I wouldn’t want to disparage people who haven’t travelled because that is almost
invariably due-to a lack of opportunity. I doubt any of my great-grandparent’s generation ever
travelled anywhere. But I can’t help but think that it does make you a more open-minded person,
as you see different ways of living, eating, drinking, interacting with others, and it allows you to
see your own culture more objectively. It also leads to you having a wider range of experiences
and makes you more interesting to talk to.
→ I think younger people tend to enjoy adventure and having fun. And older people value
relaxation more because they have so many responsibilities at home that what they want more than
anything is to ‘switch off’ when they go away. Of course, that’s a generalisation and only takes
you so far. I know it’s true of me, though.
→ They are various. Tourism brings investment and better infrastructure to poorer communities.
This means that tourists find it easier to get around, but it also leads to an improved quality of life
for the local people. It also brings about greater work opportunities for the local community.
Previously, for example, they may just have had fishing or farming, but tourism opens up the
possibility of higher-earning jobs.

SPEAKING 3 9
→ Well, I've seen areas where large numbers of visitors have had a harmful effect on local habitats.
For example, coral reefs in the Caribbean. It's really tragic. The best solution, as far as the wildlife
is concerned, would be to ban tourism for a few decades to let the reefs recover, but, of course, the
local economy has come to rely on tourism and there would be an uproar if the government were
to take that drastic step.
→ Tourism development has put a great deal of pressure on local environment and community.
Growing demand for transportation by airplanes, buses, cars and boats has led to increased air
pollution and water pollution. Added to that, an influx of visitors can leave devastating impacts on
local cultures. For example, a great number of Asian traditions and customs have been modified
to accommodate the taste of western travelers. As a result, cultures around the world are losing
authenticity and becoming similar to each other.
→ I believe tourism has a huge impact in contributing towards the GDP of our country. When
foreign tourists visit Vietnam, they bring foreign currency with them that adds value in the
economy. Also, local residents of the tourist place get employment opportunities such as working
as tourist guides to them or become sellers to them.
