2. IELTS Speaking Part 1: Introduction & Interview

1. Is your country popular with tourists?

→ Oh yes, it is. Vietnam is a key tourist destination. It is very suitable with sunseekers because
Vietnam is a tropical country, so we get a lot of sun. Furthermore, people who are into culture and
history love my country. We get millions of visitors every year.
→ Yes, there is no doubt about it. Vietnam is a very popular tourist destination thanks to its diverse
nature and culture. My country can offer tourists a broad range of activities, starting from
UNESCO World Heritage sites, various beautiful oceans and beaches.
→ Yes, that’s so true. Vietnam is a popular tourist destination as it still preserves most of its natural
beauty. Having both the mountain landscape towards the North and beaches down the central
Vietnam and Southern Vietnam, my country is one of the best places to visit.
2. What sights and activities would you recommend to a tourist visiting your town or region?
→ There are a great number of ancient sites near here, for example Hoi An Ancient Town, My
Son Sanctuary. They’re fascinating and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone. If you
like local arts and handicrafts, then you will be able to shop for beautiful locally made products in
places like the main central market in Hoi An.
→ You should choose Ho Chi Minh City as your first destination when traveling to Vietnam. A
visit to Saigon, the former name of Ho Chi Minh City, is like an encounter with exotic delicious
food, French colonial architecture and memories of Vietnam War. This city has many historically
important locations such as War Remnants Museum, the Independence Palace, the complicated
system of Cu Chi Tunnels.
→ One of the most indispensable places in your Vietnam tours is Ha Noi, the capital of Vietnam.
Visiting Ha Noi Old Quarter, you will have a chance to wander all day on 36 streets for 36 trades.
Also, Ha Noi owns a large number of architectural structures reflecting the intercultural
intersections between Vietnam and France. Some outstanding destinations are National Museum
of Vietnamese History, Hanoi Opera House, Presidential Palace and Long Bien Bridge.
3. Do you enjoy active holidays?
→ Yes, I prefer active holidays, because I get bored when I stay home. Travelling to somewhere
in a holiday not only changes my mind and refreshes me but also makes me forget the busy work
schedule.
→ Yes, absolutely. I’m not one of those people who like to sit by the pool all day and sunbathe. I
get so bored. When I go on holiday, I like to get out there and visit the historical buildings, eat the
local food and, if possible, speak to the local people.
→ Yes, I certainly do. I hate just sitting on a beach, I love hiking. Last year I went hiking in Da
Lat with some friends. It was incredibly tough but really rewarding and I got very fit and slim. We
want to do something similar next year if the COVID-19 pandemic can be controlled.
4. Could you tell me what your ideal holiday would be?
→ My ideal holidays are when I discover new things, so I wouldn’t say I have one ideal holiday
in mind, But it’s true that I would love to go to South America, especially Peru, I believe it’s great
for hikers and the landscape just looks breathtaking, I speak some Spanish too so I could
communicate with the locals.

→ I’ve always wanted to visit South Africa. I’d love to go on a safari and see all the wild animals.
It’s a dream of mine to camp out on the savannah, watching the sunset and drinking a nice glass
of wine surrounded by the wildlife. I want to trek up to Table Mountain as well. I’ve seen pictures
of people at the peak of the mountain and they look absolutely incredible.
→ For us, the perfect holiday would be a relaxing beach holiday. Even though the summer tends
to be the busiest tourist season, we would most probably go to a beach resort to enjoy the beautiful
summer weather. We much prefer hot weather, because my parents live in a city in the north part
of Vietnam where the weather is much colder than most regions in the country.

5. What do you often do in your holidays?

→ I love spending time with my family on picnics or trips to the outskirt of Ho Chi Minh City.
These are definitely rare occasions where I’m able to escape from the chaos of this city.
→ Holiday seasons in big cities like Ho Chi Minh City offer a wide range of exciting activities for
every age group to enjoy. Personally, I enjoy eating out with my friends. Because of the hectic life
of university students, we don’t see each other that often.
→ Sometimes I travel to broaden my horizons, to admire the beauty of nature and to plunge myself
into the picturesque landscape in other regions in my country. Every now and then, I just stay at
home with my family and have a little get-together to celebrate the holidays.

6. Do you prefer travelling alone or in a group?

→ Travelling alone will be my choice. Compared to travelling in a group, It’s more comfortable.
I like doing whatever I want without asking for the agreement of other people while travelling.
→ I prefer travelling in a group as it’s always safe and most affordable. Also when we go on a trip
as a group we are bonded with different type of people and make a lot beautiful ,sour and sweet
memories.
→ Well, I would prefer travelling with a group of friends or with my family. Honestly, travelling
within a group is safer. when travelling, particularly in unknown places, it may be dangerous since
every town or city has its problems like pick-pockets, criminals, …

7. Would you recommend your hometown to foreign tourists?

→ Yes, definitely. My hometown, Hue city, is the best place to visit on a holiday as it has the best
scenic views and a lot of places to wander around. Also my hometown is kind of famous for its
delicious food and shopping areas.
→ Yes, definitely. My hometown which is Ho Chi Minh City is considered to be one of the best
cities to travel to because of its rich and diverse culture. The way the people in Saigon welcome
others with such a warm heart is tremendous to be felt.
→ Yes, definitely. Actually, my hometown, Bac Lieu province, is not yet prominent among
travellers. I want foreign people to witness how magnificent my hometown is. I want them to know
that there’s more to this place than Prince of Bac Lieu's House.

8. If you can visit another country, where will you go? Why?
→ I would like to visit Japan and also South Korea. These are my most favourite and desired
destinations because of their scenic beauty and also the people who are very generous and sweet.

→ I had first thought about this when I was in middle school. I remember seeing Egyptian
pyramids in one of our books about nature and falling in love with them. Since then, I have always
wanted to go to Egypt and to visit these ancient structures.
→ If I have the chance to visit one famous place, it will be Paris, a must-see place to me. I would
love to visit the Eiffel Tower, to tuck into French delicacies in prestigious restaurants. In addition,
it’d be great for me to visit the Louver Museum and discover history as well as La Sorbonne
University – the oldest educational institution in modern France.
9. Are there many tourists visiting your country?
→ Yes … we have a lot of holiday resorts along the coast that are popular with tourists … most
people come on package holidays and stay in one of the many hotels and self-catering apartments.
→ Yes, a good number of foreign visitors come into my country, Vietnam. I have noticed that the
middle-aged people are more in number than other age groups. They come from almost every part
of the world including Asia, Europe, and America.
→ Absolutely… I live in Vietnam and we have many different tourist attractions in many cities,
especially Ha Noi capital and Ho Chi Minh City… In addition, my country has old-time religious
traditions. That's why we have a lot of ancient pagodas and churches that are interesting for both
tourists and local citizens.
10. What kind of places have you visited in your life?
→ Sadly, I didn’t get to see many destinations inside and outside of my native country. I have
traveled a bit in the South of Vietnam and went to see parts of Thailand and Cambodia.
→ I am a working person. Therefore, I prefer to visit the places which elevate my mood and
energize me. I have been to some of the most beautiful beaches and lakes in my country, such as
Vung Tau beach, Phan Thiet beach, Ba Be lake, Hoan Kiem lake. These places bring me closer to
nature and refresh me.
→ I usually prefer to visit places which have historical significance. I have been to several places
such as on Dao Prison, the tomb of Khai Dinh, Cu Chi Tunnels, and many more place, which retain
a glorious ancient history and are important in enhancing the knowledge about our culture.

Example notes: - Indonesia

- Boat trip: Lombok => Komodo
- Summer, 2016
- Snorkeling, sightseeing, trekking
- Manta rays, komodo dragons, dolphins

Model answer 1:
In the summer of 2016, I visited Indonesia.
To begin with, I was travelling with my friend, but then I took a boat trip alone. The boat sailed from
the island of Lombok to a place called Komodo National Park, which is famous for being the home of
the Komodo dragon – an amazing species of lizard. We sailed for four days and four nights on rough
seas, but it was a beautiful trip. In the day time you could just relax and watch the islands go by, and
at night you could see an incredible number of stars. Sometimes the boat would stop and we could go
swimming or snorkeling. I swam with manta rays, dolphins, giant moray eels, and countless other fish.
Sometimes you could go trekking on remote islands and climb to the very top to see the astounding
views.
It was a memorable experience for me because of the exotic wildlife and stunning views, as well as
the feeling of being on the sea at night, under all those stars.

Model answer 2:
Example notes: - Nha Trang
- a few months ago
- flight = 1 hour >< train = 15 hours
- cruise, sightseeing, cookery course
- colourful lifestyle, spectacular scenery
I would like to talk about a holiday I went on in the south of Vietnam just a few months ago.
I went with my parents to a town called Nha Trang, which is a lovely coastal town, and we decided to
go there so that they could experience a different part of the country and see life by the beach.
We flew there from Ha Noi, which is the capital of Vietnam. The flight took about 1 hour and on the
whole it went smoothly. We managed to be one of the first on board and one of the first off when we
landed. It was certainly quicker and easier than going by train, which can take over 15 hours.
There was so much to do there that we only had a chance to do just a few things on our three-day trip.
We took a cruise around the islands and also did some sightseeing inland as well. Taking part in a
cookery course was great fun, where we bought fresh ingredients at the local market and learned how
to use a wok to fry fresh fish and other seafood like crab and lobster.
We definitely enjoyed our trip and would go there again if we could. Seeing the colourful lifestyle of
the locals and having a chance to see spectacular scenery was something we will never forget. For my
parents it was a holiday of a life time and they’re still talking about it. If I could live there, I would.

4. IELTS Speaking Part 3: Discussion

The benefits of travel

1. Do you think it’s true that travel broadens the mind?
→ Yes, I agree. Traveling makes you a more open person, as you see ways of living, eating,
drinking, interacting with others and it allows you to see your own culture more objectively. It also
leads to more experience and makes you more interesting to chat.

→ Travelling broadens our mind, enhances our knowledge and gives us unique first-hand
experiences if it is done in a right way. To gain ideology of different cultures and to overcome the
superstitions, travelling has no alternative. Every single day of travelling teaches us a different
lesson, and we experience new things while we travel. So I quite agree that travelling to different
places definitely broadens the mind.

→ I do, yes. I wouldn’t want to disparage people who haven’t travelled because that is almost
invariably due-to a lack of opportunity. I doubt any of my great-grandparent’s generation ever
travelled anywhere. But I can’t help but think that it does make you a more open-minded person,
as you see different ways of living, eating, drinking, interacting with others, and it allows you to
see your own culture more objectively. It also leads to you having a wider range of experiences
and makes you more interesting to talk to.

2. Do young people and older people benefit differently from travelling?

→ I think young people tend to be adventurous and have fun. And older people value relaxation
more because they have so many responsibilities at home that what they want more than anything
is to turn off their phones while away.

→ I think younger people tend to enjoy adventure and having fun. And older people value
relaxation more because they have so many responsibilities at home that what they want more than
anything is to ‘switch off’ when they go away. Of course, that’s a generalisation and only takes
you so far. I know it’s true of me, though.

The impact of tourism

1. What are the positive impacts of tourism?
→ They are very diverse. Tourism brings investment and better infrastructure to poorer
communities. This means that tourists find it easier to get around, but it also leads to an improved
quality of life for locals. It also provides greater employment opportunities for the local
community. For example, in the past, they could have both fished or farmed, but tourism opens up
the possibility of higher employment.

→ They are various. Tourism brings investment and better infrastructure to poorer communities.
This means that tourists find it easier to get around, but it also leads to an improved quality of life
for the local people. It also brings about greater work opportunities for the local community.
Previously, for example, they may just have had fishing or farming, but tourism opens up the
possibility of higher-earning jobs.

Lý Công Khanh, M.Ed Unit 11: On the move
SPEAKING 3 9

2. What are the negative impacts of tourism?

→ There are various negative consequences of tourism that can negatively affect the local people
staying in that place. If the foreign tourists do not take care of the historical places well, it would
cause damage to these historical buildings and thereby, the loss of culture and heritage. Secondly,
huge crowd of tourists can also affect the city, causing inconvenience to a number of local
residents.

→ Well, I've seen areas where large numbers of visitors have had a harmful effect on local habitats.
For example, coral reefs in the Caribbean. It's really tragic. The best solution, as far as the wildlife
is concerned, would be to ban tourism for a few decades to let the reefs recover, but, of course, the
local economy has come to rely on tourism and there would be an uproar if the government were
to take that drastic step.

→ Tourism development has put a great deal of pressure on local environment and community.
Growing demand for transportation by airplanes, buses, cars and boats has led to increased air
pollution and water pollution. Added to that, an influx of visitors can leave devastating impacts on
local cultures. For example, a great number of Asian traditions and customs have been modified
to accommodate the taste of western travelers. As a result, cultures around the world are losing
authenticity and becoming similar to each other.

3. How has tourism impacted tourist sites in your country?

→ I think with the advantages of tourist sites, my country is a destination that attracts a lot of
tourists and that brings a lot of benefits to the country, both economically and socially. For
example, small souvenir shops now have a larger customer base because of the number of visitors
to our temples.

→ I believe tourism has a huge impact in contributing towards the GDP of our country. When
foreign tourists visit Vietnam, they bring foreign currency with them that adds value in the
economy. Also, local residents of the tourist place get employment opportunities such as working
as tourist guides to them or become sellers to them.
