Stomp!
Raise hands!
Clap!

What do you think are these words?

These words are verbs or what we call the

action words.

1. Presentation of the Lesson

Today we will use verbs in a sentence, to learn
how the verb agrees with the subject.
Our topic for today is the Subject – verb
agreement!
At the end of our discussion, you must be
familiarized and construct sentence using the
subject – verb agreement.

2. Discussion
I have here an example of sentences.
Let’s all read the first sentence!

In this sentence what is the subject? Ryan climbs on a mango tree.

Yes Ana!
Correct! Ryan, Sir!
(the teacher will write the answer on the
board)

What is the verb in the first sentence?

Yes Mike! Climbs, Sir!

Very Good!
(the teacher will write the answer on the
board)
The boys fetch water in the hand pump.
Let’s all read the next sentence!

Who is the subject? Boys, Sir!

Yes John!

Correct!
(the teacher will write the answer on the
board)
Fetch, Sir!
What is the verb in the second sentence?
Yes James!

Very Good!
(the teacher will write the answer on the
board)

Let’s study your answer that I wrote on the

board.
In the first table on left column, I wrote the
subject Ryan and in the right column I wrote
the verb climbs.
As you can see, on the first table we have
singular subject and we have a singular verb
The first rule in subject – verb agreement is,
singular subjects take singular verbs.

In the second table on left column, I wrote the

subject Boys and in the right column I wrote
the verb fetch. Our subject here is plural
because it consists of more than two subjects.
The second rule on a subject – verb agreement
is, Plural subject takes plural verb.

Let’s have an example.

He eats his breakfast with his family.
In this sentence, what is the subject?
Yes Mary! He, Sir!

Correct! And he is a singular subject.

How about the verb, what is the verb in this
sentence?
Yes Lino! Eats, Sir!

Very Good! We add ‘s’ in eat to make it singular

verb that will agree with the singular subject!

Let’s all read this another sentence.

Dana and Milky walk on the street.
In this sentence, who can give me the subject?
Yes Vince! Dana and Milky, Sir!

Correct! Dana and Milky are plural because it

composes more than one subject. How about
the verb?
Yes Joe!

Very Good! Walk is a plural verb.

In this sentence the verb agrees with the Walk, Sir!
subject

Let’s try to study this sentence.

Jane jump on the fence.
Is our sentence correct? Yes or no? No Sir!

Why did you say that this sentence is not

correct?
Yes Ken! Because the verb is plural, Sir!

Let’s see if you’re correct, who can give me the

subject in this sentence.
Yes Maria! Jane, Sir!

Correct!
And what is the verb?
Yes Aryan! Jump, Sir!

Is the subject agree with the verb? No Sir!

Very Good, No! Because the subject is singular

and as Ken said a while ago that the verb is
plural! This sentence is not correct, we should
add ‘s’ to the verb to make it singular.

Who can give an example of sentence using the

first rule of subject verb agreement?
Yes Mike! Jasmine throws the ball outside the room.

Is the subject Jasmine agree with the verb

throws? Yes Sir!

Very Good! Because he use singular subject and

singular verb.
Who can give an example of sentence using the
second rule of subject – verb agreement?
Yes Hannah! They study the life cycle of a frog.

Is the sentence correct? Yes Sir!

Is the subject agrees with the verb? Yes Sir!

Very Good! She use plural subject “they” and

plural verb “study”.

What are the rules in subject – verb Singular subject takes singular verb!
agreement?

Very Good! That’s the first rule, how about the Plural subject takes plural verb!
second rule?

Very Good!
D. Application
We will have a Group Activity. I will divide you
into three groups. The first group will construct
5 sentences on how to prevent covid-19 using
the subject – verb agreement. The second
group will write a short poem using subject –
verb agreement. And the third group will
construct 5 sentences base on the picture
given.
Mechanics in group activity.
Discipline – 5 points
Team Work – 5 points
Output – 10 points

E. Generalization
What are verbs again? Verbs are action words.

Very Good.

If we have singular subject the verb must be? Singular!

And if we have plural subject the verb must be? Plural!

Very Good.
