Transformer Banks
• Combination of 2 or 3 single phase transformers to form a three-phase
unit.
A. Three single phase unit
• ∆-∆ bank
• Y-Y bank
• ∆-Y bank
• Y-∆ bank
B. Two single phase units
• Open delta
• Scott or Tee

• Y-Y Connection • Y-∆ Connection

• This connection is used to stepped
• This connection is used to stepped
down voltage
up or down voltage

∆-∆ Connection
• ∆-Y Connection • This connection is generally used in system
• This connection is used to step up in which the voltages are not high and
voltage especially when continuity of service must
be maintained.

1. A 3-ᶲ transformer is connected ∆-Y to step up the voltage at the beginning of 13200V 3ᶲ
transmission line. Calculate the voltage at the LS. (ratio of transformation of 5)

Lesson 9 Page 1
2. It is desire to step down 3ᶲ voltage from 6600 to 460 using a Y-∆ transformer connection.
Calculate the ratio of transformation.

3. A 13800/6600 V, Y-∆, 3ᶲ transformer is used to deliver 6000V to the load. What must be the
voltage of supply if the primary is set at minus 5% tap?

Open Delta or V-V connection

• Used when 3ᶲ load is too small rather than to install of full 3ᶲ transformer bank
• When one of the transformer is ∆-∆ bank is removed for repair so that its service is
continued although at reduced capacity
• When it is anticipated that in the future the load will increase necessitating the
closing of <-<.

• Capacity of ∠-∠ bank = 0.57735 cap ∆-∆ bank OR

• KVA load that can carry by ∠-∠ bank transformer = 0.57735 of KVA load of ∆-∆
bank
• KVAload that can be supplied by each transformer bank ∠-∠ = 0.866025 of its
KVA rating

Lesson 9 Page 2
KVA rating
• KVA rating of each transformer to supply 3ᶲ load banked ∠-∠ = 0.57735 of
3ᶲ load

1. A ∆-∆ bank consisting of a 3 20 kVA supplied a load at 40 kVA. If one transformer is

removed, find:
a. KVA load carried by each transformer
b. % kVA load carried by each
c. KVA rating of ∠-∠ bank

2. A 2 single phase distribution transformers connected in open delta will supply power to a
200Hp, 3ᶲ induction motor operating at 0.7 pf and 90% efficiency. Solve for the minimum
size in KVA of each transformer

3. The utility company supplies 2 single phase transformer banked in open delta. If each
transformer is 75 kVA capacity, what is the max 3ᶲ in kilowatts that the bank can carry w/o
suffering overload considering that the load has a lagging pf of 0.8.

4. A 3ᶲ transformer each rated 75 kVA are banked in delta and supplying a 3ᶲ load drawing
Lesson 9 Page 3
4. A 3ᶲ transformer each rated 75 kVA are banked in delta and supplying a 3ᶲ load drawing
160 kVA at 0.8 lag pf. If a transformer is removed, solve for the amount of overloading
remaining units.

5. Three single phase transformer each rated 120 kVA are banked delta supplying a 3ᶲ load
of 360 kVA. If one transformer is removed for repairs and the remaining transformer are
banked ∠-∠, find:
a. KVA carried by the remaining transformer
b. KVA overload by the remaining transformer
c. KVA overload on each transformer
d. What will be the size of each transformer to supply a 3ᶲ load banked ∠-∠

6. Three single phase transformer each rated 150 kVA are banked delta supplying a 3ᶲ load of
415 kVA. If one transformer is removed for repairs and the remaining transformer are banked
∠-∠, find:
a. KVA carried by the remaining transformer
b. KVA overload by the remaining transformer
c. KVA overload on each transformer
d. What will be the size of each transformer to supply a 3ᶲ load banked ∠-∠

Lesson 9 Page 4
7. 3 transformers each rated 100 kVA and connected delta supplying a load of 160 kW at 0.8
pf lagging. One of the transformers is taken for repair and the rest are connected open
delta. What KVAR (minimum) of capacitor must be connected with the load so that the
load of the remaining transformer will be 95% of their combined rated capacities?

8. Two single phase transformer each rated 150 kVA are connected open delta supplying
a 3ᶲ I.M. rated 250Hp, 0.7 pf and 80% eff. Determine the minimum size of a capacitor
