Competency Goal 3

To support social and emotional development and to provide positive guidance.

Functional Area 1: Self

 One of my goals and the functional area of self is to support the social and emotional

development of all the children in my care period it is my goal to support the children in

my care as they navigate through many conflicting feelings that occur in this age range.

As children grow, they need an environment that is secure and a secure relationship with

their teachers period to ensure that I meet my goal in a beneficial way to the children in

my care, I will create an environment that will support the development of positive self-

concepts. One example of how I will do this is by giving the children their own spaces to

store their own things. I will also showcase pictures, artwork and activities to assist in the

development of the child's self-identity and worth.

Functional Area 2: Social

 One of my goals and the functional area of social is to provide positive social interactions

that promote social and emotional development. Some of the ways I will accomplish this

goal is by providing materials and activities that give children the experience of working

and playing in harmony with one another. Activities will be diverse and represent the

diversity seen in the classroom. Another example I would apply is by encouraging social

interactions and promoting a child's sense of belonging in the classroom community. I

will do this by modeling friendly behavior with the children and other adults. Afterwards

I will encourage the children to interact with each other in the playful and caring ways

that I have modeled in the classroom.


Functional area 3: Guidance

 One of my goals in the functional area of guidance is to provide a learning environment

that utilizes effective strategies that can support the self-regulation of children as well as

acceptable behaviors. This is important for the age group because children are receiving a

foundation of how they should behave within a classroom setting. By doing this I will be

making a better transition for the children changing classrooms because these children

will already have basic self-regulation and behavioral skills. One example of how I will

achieve this goal is by modeling appropriate behaviors such as sharing, waiting and

taking turns. I will reinforce positively worded directions, while implementing effective

classroom management techniques.
