1 General

1.1 Scope of work

This document, in conjunction with its ANNEX, reports the calculations

performed in order to design the Cathodic Protection system new water injection
flow lines connected to NCS, UMCS, LMCS and SCS based on executed CP
systems and connections in the previous project.

However, the performed calculations in this document is to make sure that there
is current spare available in each CP system related to the new flow lines.
If no spare available, it’s required to install new cathodic protection station

Pipelines lengths are approximate at this stage of the project. Any variation due
to new rerouting will be included in the final revision of this document, after the
end of pipeline laying. A 5% contingency for pipelines length will be considered
to include any pipelines route modification.

All the pipelines are made of API 5L X60 carbon steel and are coated by means
of three layer of extruded high density polyethylene (3LPE).

The maximum operative temperature of pipeline will be 77°C.

As per FEED resistivity measurement reports (listed under paragraph Error:

Reference source not found), Zubair area has been divided into four ranges of
values:
Low resistivity areas: 1 - 10 Ω∙m
Medium resistivity areas: 10 - 100 Ω∙m
High resistivity areas: 100 - 1,000 Ω∙m
Very high resistivity areas: > 1,000 Ω∙m

Protection potential

Permanent CP system will provide all buried metallic surfaces to be cathodically

protected with a polarized protective potential ranging between -0.85 V ad -1.10 V
vs. CSE (instant “off” measurement condition).
Where the structures will be installed in anaerobic soils (clay) the polarized
protective potential shall be more negative than -0.95 V vs. CSE (instant “off”
measurement condition).
According to ISO 15589-1 paragraph 5.3.2, where the structures will be installed
in soils with very high resistivity, the polarized protective potential (instant “off”
measurement condition) shall be more negative than:
-0.75 V vs. CSE for soil resistivity ranging between 100 and 1,000 m
-0.65 V vs. CSE for soil resistivity over 1,000 m.
Eventually, at irregular instances, a minimum of 100 mV of cathodic polarization
is accepted.
Buried carbon steel native potential is considered equal to -0.50 V vs. CSE.

Protection current density

According to ISO 15589-1, paragraph 5.8, table 2, the CBF for the pipelines will
be 0.009.
For three-layer epoxy-polypropylene coated steel surface at 30°C is:
Low resistivity areas: 0.180 mA/m 2
Medium resistivity areas: 0.090 mA/m 2
High resistivity areas: 0.045 mA/m 2
Very high resistivity areas: 0.009 mA/m 2.
Because the maximum operating temperature is 77°C, the values reported above
change into:
Low resistivity areas: 0.392 mA/m 2
Medium resistivity areas: 0.196 mA/m 2
High resistivity areas: 0.098 mA/m 2
Very high resistivity areas: 0.020 mA/m 2.

the minimum design protective current density for new pipelines at the end of rated life will be 0.1
mA/m2 minimum.
This value, for the operating temperature of 77°C becomes:
0.1 · 2.2 = 0.22 mA/m 2.
Therefore the selected protection current density values for definitive CP
protection are:
Low resistivity areas: 0.39 mA/m 2
Medium resistivity areas: 0.22 mA/m 2
High resistivity areas: 0.22 mA/m 2
Very high resistivity areas: 0.22 mA/m 2.

3.2 Definitive CP system sizing

T/R units will have the following characteristics:

Maximum voltage output: 50 V
Maximum current output: 25 A.
Anodes shall have the following characteristics:
Material: Ti/MMO
Shape: Tubular
Diameter: 25 mm
Length: 1,000 mm
Weight (single anode) 0.25 kg
Maximum operative current density in backfill: 100 A/m2.

Each CP system will be constituted of one (1) CPS composed by:

 a T/R unit;
 an impressed current deep well anodic groundbed and the relevant PJB;
 suitable positive and negative power cables;
 suitable monitoring and grounding cables;
 suitable test points distributed along the pipelines routes.

CPSs locations are reported in the following table:

CPS T/R
T/R Location
Nos. Denomination
7 South Complex Satellite CP-TR/7
8 Lower Medial Complex Satellite CP-TR/8
9 Upper Medial Complex Satellite CP-TR/9

The presence of deep groundwater at about 70 m deep can be affirmed.

Groundbeds about 100 m deep have been selected in order to be filled with
groundwater.
Consequently, deep resistivity value can be reasonably assumed to be 75
Ohmm.

Note: (*) A 20,000 Ω·m insulation resistances value has been considered.

Based on the simplified pipelines network scheme and equivalent pipelines (see
ANNEX A) and on above data, characteristic resistance and attenuation constant
for each section of the pipeline network have been calculated.
Results have been reported in ANNEX A.

3.2.3 Pipeline potential shift

Considering data listed under paragraph 3.2.2, the pipelines potential shift for
each section of pipeline has been calculated. Results have been reported in
ANNEX A.

Calculation demonstrates that current requirements for potential shift will be:

which are less than values calculated for current density requirement; as
consequence, current requirements are verified.

3.2.4 Groundbed design

The groundbed of each CPS will be sized for the maximum current output of the
T/R unit. The groundbed configuration will be verified according to groundbed
and total circuit resistance requirements.
Since each T/R has the same characteristics, groundbeds will be identical, with
the exception of concrete ring depth, which will change for each CPS location,
according to first groundwater level.

Groundbeds characteristics are the following:

Total depth 96 m
Diameter (well casing) 0.270 m
Anode cables: single cable anodes.

Anode quantity

Referring to Equation 23 reported in Doc. n. 00250600DESG4182S, minimum

number of anodes to be installed, accounting maximum anode operative current
density, is:

Verification of anode quantity vs. design life

As per Equation 24 reported in Doc. n. 00250600DESG4182S:

where:

ia = anodic current density = A/m²

it will be obtained:

1.47 < 1.57

The expected life of Ti/MMO anodes is verified to be greater than the design life.

Maximum DC circuit resistance

Referring to Equation 28 reported in Doc. n. 00250600DESG4182S and

considering T/R units having characteristics reported above, the maximum
allowable DC circuit resistance Rmax [Ω] for each CPS is:

Groundbed resistance and active length

Considering Nos. 4 Ti/MMO anodes, 2.5 m spaced, deep well groundbed active
length is (using Equation 25 reported in Doc. n. 00250600DESG4182S):

m + 1 m (0.5 at the top+ 0.5 at the

bottom)=12.5m

Groundbed resistance calculation will take into account the following soil
resistivity values at groundbeds installation areas:

Soil resistivity
Groundbed
[Ω·m]
CPS7 75
CPS8 75
CPS9 75

Groundbed resistance, calculated with Dwight’s equation (Equation 26 reported

in Doc. n. 00250600DESG4182S), is:

= 4.7 

Because Ra > Rmax, this groundbed resistance value is not acceptable and
calculation shall be repeated until Ra results less than Rmax.

To fulfil the condition above, each groundbed shall be constituted by nos. 16

Ti/MMO anodes.

With this number of anodes groundbed active length results:

Therefore, groundbed resistance results:

= 1.4 

Verification of anode quantity vs. design life

According to the following equation (Equation 24 reported in Doc. n.

and considering that:

ia = anodic current density = A/m²

it will be obtained:

1.47 < 2.18

The expected life of Ti/MMO anodes is verified to be greater than the design life.

Verification of total DC circuit resistance

The total DC circuit resistance Rtot [], including pipeline resistance vs. earth and
connecting cables resistance, is calculated as follows:

=1.66 

Since 1.66 < 1.92, groundbed is correctly sized.

3.3 Summary
