Acid vs Base

I. Introduction
On a day to day basis, we see certain liquids such as coffee and ketchup as nothing more than
ordinary liquids. But what if they contain acidity and alkalinity? In this research, I will be testing
just how much acidic and basic normal day to day liquids are. This observation aims to help us
know what those liquids contain.

II. Objectives
a. During this observation, I will be testing just how acidic and basic certain liquids are.
b. After this observation, we will see what happens to the litmus paper when dipped into
different liquids.

III. Materials
- Watch Glass
- Litmus Paper
- Ketchup
- Coffee
- Disinfectant

IV. Procedure
1. Dip the litmus paper in each of the three sample
2. If the paper turns red, the sample is acidic
3. If the paper turns blue, the sample is basic

V. Results and Discussion

Sample Blue litmus Red litmus Acid or Base

Ketchup / X Base

Disinfectant X / Acidic

Coffee / X Base

V.I. It is therefore concluded that coffee and ketchup are considered basic as the litmus paper turns blue
after dipping while disinfectant was found to be acidic as the litmus paper became red after dipping into
it.
