This reading takes 8 minutes. But keep in mind that the suggested verses in this section and all
following sections may need to be lengthened or shortened based on available class time. Most
Bible translations refer to Moses crossing the ‘Red Sea’ whereas the ‘Red Sea’ was translated
from a description of the body of water which was called the ‘reed sea.’ So did Moses actually
cross the body of water today called the Red Sea or a different body surrounded by shallow water
filled with reeds? Whether the body of water Moses and the Israelites crossed was the Red Sea
we see on the map or another different body of water is not really important because the same
thing happened, the body of water opened up so Moses and the Israelites could cross and then
flooded back upon the Egyptian army! Who knows but the early description of the body of water
may be interesting in the class. Jewish historian Josephus reports that in Moses’ first 40 years in
Egypt, he was a respected military leader and when the Ethiopians were invading Egypt from the
south and driving the Egyptian army back, Moses was placed as military commander and then
the Egyptians won the battle. Moses was a leader described in the Bible as the humble. So where
did Moses get this humility. The second 40 years of his life, Moses tended sheep and these sheep
were not even his sheep but belonged to his father-in-law Jethro. Why is that important? Recall
when Joseph invited his family to come to Egypt, he told them when they talked to Pharaoh, do
not say you are shepherds because that is an abomination to the Egyptians. For Biblical numbers,
Moses did 12 miracles in front of Pharaoh.
