QUESTIONS:
 What are those underlined words?
 What do you notice about the underlined words?
 What do you call those words?
 Are you familiar with Gerunds?

B. LESSON DEVELOPMENT
The teacher will discuss the following:
Parallel Structure
 When you write in parallel structure, you use the same pattern of words to show that the two
items are equally important.
 Parallel structure is oftentimes referred to as parallelism.
 Parallelism or parallel structure, is a way of providing balance to sentences or clauses by using a
similar grammatical structure.
 Parallel structure is using the same pattern of words to make the flow of writing better.

Why use Parallel Structure?

 Improves the clarity of your writing
 Provides more of an impact
 Adds style to your writing

What is gerund?
 A gerund is a word that ends with “-ing”. The word used is initially a verb, but the addition of
the “-ing” on the end turns it into a gerund, and this word is then used like a noun.
(base form) + -ing
jogging = gerund
I love jogging. (jog is the base form = running is the gerund)
running = gerund
Running is fun. (run is the base form = running is the gerund)
Gerund Phrase
Dave enjoys playing basketball and playing the piano.
The girls loved reading books and watching movies.
Parallel Structure with Gerunds
•A gerund is the -ing form of a word.
Example: running, fishing, jumping
Example sentence in parallel structure:
• Cindy likes running, fishing, and hiking.
This sentence is in parallel structure because all of the verbs are in the same tense.

SPOT THE ERROR

Not Parallel Parallel
Sara like to run, swimming, and jumping. Sara like running, swimming, and jumping.

When the sentence is parallel, ALL of the verbs in

the list are the same form and tense.

REMEMBER: When a series is composed of

gerunds, do not mix with other forms. For example,
mixing an infinitive (a verb beginning with “to”) with
a gerund (a verb form ending in -ing) breaks parallel
structure.

C. GENERALIZATION
The teacher will ask the following questions:

1. What is parallel structure or parallelism?

2. What is a gerund?
3. Give an example of gerund or gerund phrases.
4. Which of the two has parallel structure in gerund form?
a. I like to jog, baking, painting, and watching.
b. I like jogging, baking, painting, and watching.

D. APPLICATION
Directions: The students will be the one to choose their partner for this activity and the other one will be the
representative or the one to play the game. The teacher will present the sentences to the students through a
PowerPoint Presentation, and they will identify if the sentences are parallel (using gerunds) or not. The
representative of each pair will form a line towards their chosen answer. The students who got the correct
answer will remain in the game. However, those who got the wrong answer will be eliminated and those
who will remain standing until the last question will get an additional two points each on the next activity.
By this activity, the students will be able to show their trust to their partner and their determination to win as
one.
